I think two specific points may require clarification:
1. How to change the container from mp4 to, say, avi? Some people might wish to do that, because of various reasons, including relative familiarity with editing AVIs, and relative ease of playing small-sized external text-subs (like .SRT). This switching the container will not be an encoding process, thereby being a lossless one, only changing the overhead.
2. Is there any way subtitles can be used with an mp4 file without 'muxing' or 'storing into the mp4', in the same way subs are used with an AVI with the help of VobSub? And, by the way, does this 'muxing' mean a fresh bout of encoding?
Regards.

thx for your proposals for the mp4 faq

anyways that request is not something related to mp4 or any other container but a request whether vsfilter handles this only with the microsoft avi splitter. as i doubt that its limited that way i assume vsfilter is able to show external subs with any file format
just guessing

Hi, Mr bond.
Thanks for taking the trouble to relocate my questions.
mp4 > other-container conversions have 'so many possibilities' - that sounds like it'd be fun to read a guide along those lines. I'll look for one. In case I don't find it anywhere (this site doesn't have it), I'll make a request here for some mp4 guru to write one...
Regarding external subs with mp4 - well, I don't see them while playing the video when the similarly-named subtitle file is there in the same folder.
Regards.

what mp4 splitter do you use? are you sure you enabled the subs (because iirc halli doesnt display subs by default without enabling them)?
