View Full Version : Subtitle problems (DVD's getting smarter ?)

Before anything else: I use dvd2svcd for several months and created
multiple good conversions on my machine (AMD 1.3 and Win 2000)
(I use smartripper 2.40, Standalone SVCD subtitles)

But here is the problem:
Last week I converted three movies with a subtitle problems:
- It misses half of the subtitles.
The funny part is you have two times the same language(dif. stream)
("nederlands" =dutch ) in the subtitle preview screen.
(Walt Disney: emperor's new groove.)

- Subtitle go out of sync (5 minutes no subtitles, then
they start again.... but 5 minutes to late...)
(Day of the Jackal)

- Subtitles only half of them but in the preview window
They look like very small, almost dots....
(Last Run)

The problem is that I only have the DVD for one day.

My questions are :
Am I the only one ?
Could it because of a strange internationalization of
my windows 2000 ( "," instead of "." in some places)
(I had it before with another program some years ago.)
If I have it again, what do I need to check, and wich
debugging info could be usefull

Sparcky (Wishing to have constructive conversation about this.)

Hi ,

I can point to a similar case , I had once had a subtitling problem with "The mummy returns" PAL region 2 DVD.
In the screen where you select the language stream for the subs , I selected "Nederlands" = (DUTCH) , BUT in the little preview behind the stream , it shows nothing ! , once all the .bmps were extracted , i opened different ones , all were BLACK and contained nothing.
I had serious problems , getting it to work , I tried subrip and this completed OK .
So probably the answer to your question = ?
The only response I can give you from my own experience is that ,I had different DVD's giving problems with the subs and sometimes , 'weird blocky letters' also .

Nice, I have the "The mummy returns" PAL region 2 DVD just here.
So I'll test him tonight.

To: DVD2SVCD:
If I encounter "sub" problems again : which files do you need ?

To Cokeboy (Dutch subtitles, Holland ?, /me: Hilversum):
Maybe we can share the info about movies with Problems.
Yesterday I did "ManHunter" Pal reg2 : Only Half of the subs :-(
- somebody speaks: sub okay
- next one speaks: No subs :-(
- another speaks: subs okay ...
- and so on ....

To Cokeboy and Sparky

Maybe you have solved the mystery trough your internal e-mailing ?

Anyway, I had the exact same experience with The Mummy Returns and the sollution to it was to not accept the first subtitlepage that DVD2SVCD shows you. Go on with the button "next" and you get another page of subtitles, where ALL the subtitles samples in the right column shows up. Strangely it will take sometime before it shows up.

indeed, going to the next page fixed it. Thanks.
(I did it with the new build 1.0.5, so without I-author but
with the CVD subs... SVCD subs don't work on my "Divido" player.)
Up to the next one ;) !!
