Quicktime playback with MPC without Quicktime installed?

I deinstalled quicktime from my system and hoped MPC to be still able to manage mov-files, but it fails to render them. Also automatic codec-downloading doesn't work.
What do I need for *.mov playback. Any hints really appreciated. I don't want to install the clunky Quicktime-player again, because it only caused problems and i rarely needed it.
