I'm interested to know if you prefer multipass or quality mode and what file size most of your movies end up.
I prefer XviD quality mode at quant 2.5, the file size is different for every encode and I don't know it before the encoding done.

I prefer 3 HQ movies per DVD, or 6 in MQ.

Multi-pass at a set bit/pixel/frame (every file is a different length & rez). I may switch to quality mode, simply never tried it.

What about --crf? Does this go under constant quant?

i usually extimate the quant in order to get a certain size, then i go for a fixed quant encode

Other single pass: fixed quality, q=22.

1st pass crf, 2nd pass at the same bitrate. Maybe I'll switch to pure crf sometime.

@all - Do any GUIs support this mode?

MeGUI allows it if you config each pass separately, doesn't it?
StaxRip supports only automated multipass encoding as it is much streamlined but there is full control over the turbo switches so it should be doable if I recall the implementation correctly.
This screenshot shows how to tweak the turbo switches: http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip/screenshots/024.png

-crf, usually 24. I was waiting for ages for a real constant quality option.

me too....
HQ-Slow filter -3,-3Sharktooth uses alpha -2 and beta -1. What's the difference? Is -3, -3 more useful for 1CD encodes?

i use -6:-6 because i want my picture to be sharp :D

i use -6:-6 because i want my picture to be sharp :DIs there a tradeoff between sharpness and something else (quality/artifacts/etc. etc)?

i would say its a tradeoff between sharpness and block artefacts

I never use -6,-6 before, well, if the 1st pass rate factor = ~q 26
Will the video has serious blocking artefacts?
Up to what rate factor, it is safe to turn off deblocking, or it is advisable to always turn on no matter what rate facter it is?

you need to place a ":" between the two values!!! a "," wont work correctly!

I usually shoot for under 2GB. That was mostly because of the AVI virtual 2GB limit. Now that I'm living in an .mp4, AVC, AAC 5.1, and MeGUI world, I like something around the 1GB-1.5GB range for most encodes. And really it depends on the length of the movie, the quality I want for the audio (diff. each movie), and how much I like the movie ;) . I chug through alot of movies and encode maybe 1/4 of 'em. I'm addicted to cinema and mp4; its a hard life :D
