View Full Version : Save Mpeg-2 file as Mpeg-2 in VdubMod?

I wanted to use VdubMod to edit an Mpeg-2 file, so I opened the file in it and cut out the parts I wanted to (nothing special, just a few snips here and there). Then I set it to Direct Stream Copy and tried to save it. But it gave me an error saying that the source stream wasn't compatible with AVI files, and I couldn't use Direct Stream Copy. So I tried saving it as OGM and MKV files, and it didn't give me an error but the files were unreadable. I also tried the same thing with Vdub-MPEG2, but had the same problem.
So I was wondering, is there anything out there that would let me do some very simple cut edits to an Mpeg-2 file and let me save it as an Mpeg-2 file? I really don't want to have to compress it into a different format and then have to go back and re-encode it as an Mpeg-2 again. Or is there a better solution out there for this than Vdub?

Yes there are three that I know.
Womble
VideoRedo
Magix Edit Pro 10 Plus
Now are free.

VideoRedo works pretty good, as does TMPGEnc MPEG Editor (http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/tme.html). Neither one of them are free, but they both allow precise edits without having to re-encode the whole thing. The MPEG2 format was not designed with editing in mind, so both of these programs (and probably others that I don't know of) take somewhat of a novel approach to avoid re-encoding the whole thing. They only re-encode the area that you cut in, and the rest is direct stream copy.
If you don't mind limiting your cutting to just I-frames, then you have a lot more options for software. If you want your cuts to be more precise without having to stick to the I-frames, then it is impossible to make the cuts without re-encoding. Fortunately there are programs that can just re-encode in the section of your cut, i.e. a few frames before and a few frames after, adding in new I-frames to make it work, and seamlessly put it all back together. You will see the quality drop off a bit when you are watching it afterwards, in those few seconds that needed re-encoding (more so with VideoRedo than with TMPGEnc MPEG Editor IMO), but it beats re-encoding the whole thing.

VideoRedo works pretty good
Thank you for that hint!
It indeed works very well.
My case: Record something for a friend from DVB-S, just cut it. No need to do my usual h264/ogg encoding.

Argh! Forget it!
The VideoRedo editor works fine, but instead of the expected 15 minutes output you get 7 minutes. It cuts the video dead, the result is about half as long as expected.
Luckily I didn't kill my original recordings.
VideoRedo and DVB-S = no go...
Not good.

Avidemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126164) - just to name another one. It's very simular to VirtualDub(Mod), but less restricted with input/output formats.
(EDIT: Just realized how old this thread actually is ^^)
