Hi there!
today I tried the video-in feature of my ati radeon 64 vivo.
I plugged the composite cable into the scart adapter and connected my PC to my old vcr (from 1987).
It only has one scart adapter, nothing more.
at first there was no picture at all, after I reinstalled the ati driver and directx 8 there is just color on the screen, moving patterns but no real picture.
I am running on windows me at the moment, video out just works fine.
what could be the problem,is the vhs-machine too old,the radeon damaged or is it a software error?
please help, every answer is welcome. ;)

Did you install the video capture update from Microsoft's DirectX website? (http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp) You need it to capture video-- you should install everything in this order;
Microsoft DirectX 8.0a
Microsoft Video Capture Update
ATI Radeon drivers
On the other hand, I believe DirectX 8.1 comes with this update pre-installed. Windows XP users don't need the update either (which, since XP comes with DX 8.1 pre-installed, leads me to believe that it has the Video Capture Update in 8.1, shrug).

hondomondo2 is the problem solved? If the video capture update from Microsoft's DirectX website is not enough the problem could be in the scart adapter. Are you using the scart adapter included in the ati radeon 64 vivo package? In my case (I have the same video card) the included scart adapter is an "IN" one that can be used to see the PC in the TV but not to capture from the vcr to the PC. All you need is an "OUTPUT" scart adapter. I have a new scart adapter with a switch that convert it from "output" to "in". In the "output" position the capture is ok; in the "in" position the capture is not possible.
Let me know if your problem have something to do with the scart conector.

I thought Direct X 8.1 (that shipped with XP) didnt contain the Video Capture Update that 8.0a had. Im probably wrong because I remember hearing about from a friend whom isnt always accurate. Either that or Im just confused. baahhh.. its to late for thinking,.

Well the reason I think it does is because the ATI Radeon 64MB DDR ViVo I have in my Windows XP Professional system captures video just fine, and AFAIK I've never installed the Video Capture Update on that system (it's pretty much just a bare system for testing). The only thing I installed was the latest ATI drivers for XP. Plus on Microsoft's DirectX downloads page, they state that the Video Capture Update is intended for DirectX 8.0a, but no mention of 8.1 is given.

Edge, your absolutely right. After reading your post and messaging the guy whom I had originally heard my information fro -- and browsing the Direct X 8.1 FAQ on Microsoft's website. This is what ive got.
------------
Q. Should I install the Digital Video Update for DirectX 8.0?
A. Users of Windows XP do not need to download the Video Capture Update. All required files are included in Windows XP. The Digital Video Update is still available as a separate download for users of Windows 98SE, Windows ME, and Windows 2000.

Thanks Again

The only caveat for XP, unless you're already running Windows 2000, is that some of your devices and/or software may cease to function once you switch. I won't be an alarmist and say everything will break, but it might be worth checking with the manufacturers of things such as video capture devices such as webcams and so forth, and older flat-bed scanners. If your system is fairly recent, 1-2 years old or so, you should be okay as far as components go. (I know XP has a lot of built-in support for things like digital cameras, and seemed to recognize my Intel Pro PC Camera on it's own.) Best of luck, and hope it helps! =)
