View Full Version : Backup issues with Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone complex dvds

I have the entire set and wanted to back them up on DVD5 so when my girlfriend or anyone else watches them i will not have them all beat up.
The problem i'm having is that these dvd9's are really interlaced and after attempting to encode them 3x now with the big3 method they still look really bad. In a lot of parts when lights flash or a gunshot is shown you see small artifacts and you can visibly see that the movie is still interlaced to a degree. The bitrate on the 4 main vobs are 4200 which is well above the 3000 mark so i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. I have setup to IVTC in the avs editor with the same result.
Any push in the right direction would be appreciated.

What AVS scripts are you using?

I'm using the default one that comes with NuMenu4u. I followed the guide and it said to check both of the IVTC options for NTSC content and interlaced movies.

TBH use the default scripts that come with dif4u. They work very well for the different encoded types. If your source is interlaced then your avs script should be empty of filters (unless you want to deinterlace). If your source was telecined then you IVTC it. Don't confuse the two.
Both numenu and dif4u are pretty good at determining the source encoding type on NTSC material. Leave the scripts as is and make sure you set determine ntsc type in dif4u.

I have left everything intact and unchanged from the original installation of the programs. I do have Doit4u setup to autodetect the content and numenu has IVTC for NTSC content boxes checked under the script editor just like the guide said. It must be doing some type of deinterlacing because the encoding speed on CCE is more than cut in half compared to other movies i've done.
Is there anything else you would need from me to better understand my situation or the output? Logs or something possibly?

Which is the problem - menus or the movie?

The menu's are coming out just fine but the movie vobs are what's messing up. Whenever there is a flash from gunfire or a flashlight in most of the scenes you'll see heavy pixelation if you pause the video. You can also see ghosting effects but they're not the same as the original sources ghosting.
I wish there was an easy way to take a screenshot of the video so you can see exactly what i'm referring to.

In the avs scripts for interlaced material in dif4u try deinterlacing:
FieldDeinterlace()
this will blend the two fields together - it *may* improve it.

After looking at the source with VLC and using it's built in deinterlacing i found that deinterlace-> bob make everything look perfect. I'll have to see if doit4u will do that type or not.
Appreciate all the feedback btw!

dif4u will use whatever avs scripts you tell it too. It might be worth you posting in the Avisynth forum for the best script to use.
