Has anyone backed up this title yet? This is the 'Uncorked' edition so I am pretty sure its seamless branched, as it says that its longer. I also see that pgc1 is listed as about 2:09 long and pgc2 is about 1:58 long. So I unchecked pgc2 and I will fill in the missing vob ids into pgc1 manually. My question is, when I uncheck pgc2 and run it thru DIF and Scenaid, it shows the main movie bitrate at about 1950. Could it be that low? I even used Vobblanker to blank VTS 10 and 13 to get the bitrate up.

its possible.. im not sure of your full method.. are you saying you do pgc demux and some manual work to add pgc2 or are you just doing vobid demux (which btw when you do that unchecking pgc2 isnt necessary).. i'll try to get that dvd and try it

@ Trahald,

I think Hoops might be talking about the method he used on Polar Express:

jel: That is the method I was talking about. Do you think it would work?

<shrugs>

maybe if you post the overview of the ifo concerned we might, at least, have a fighting chance of guessing what would be a suitable approach :p

There are a total of 17 PGCS in the main movie vts. Hope this helps.

personally i would use the same appproach as before with this disc.
demux main movie vts by vobid (to easily give you bitrates and additional vobids to add)
demux again into different folder by pgc de-selecting pgc_2 in dif4u.
open pgc folder with scenaid
encode in batchcce (manually changing bitrates as required)
let scenaid rebuild pgc scenario in scenaid
manually re-encode additional vob-ids for pgc 2
add additional vob-ids to scenarist (manually create tracks/chapters etc)
add to pgc_2 in scnenario window.

good luck!

jel, thanks. That is what I thought too. One question though. How would I determine avg. bitrate for the main movie vts vob ids? Obviously I would use the same avg. bitrate when demuxing and encoding the additional vob ids, I just don't know how I would figure out what that avg. bitrate would be.

jel

well ... as i said, a simple method (yes you could work it out manually), is to demux entire dvd (as usuall) with vobid demux set for main movie vts, and use the bitrates dif4u gives you for this demux for both the additional vob-ids and the pgc demux .... should be pretty close anyways :)

@jel: I was just thinking, please correct me if I'm wrong. If I demux the main movie vts by vobid, I will have all the vob ids for the entire main movie vts, correct? So then couldn't I use the bitrate DIF gave me, encode it, and then manually put the different pgcs back together again? Why would I have to add vob ids from PGC2 if I already have them when I did the vob id demux? Is my logic flawed somehow here?

jel
5th February 2006, 23:28
well, yes and no ... :p

the problem with this type of pseudo-seamless branching when rebuilding from a vobid demux, is, to acheive a seamless connection between vob-ids in one pgc (which is the 'best' we can achieve with the authoring tools we have), the audio streams have to be padded/cut to align with the video, which can lead to slight pauses in audio between vob-ids.

so ...

that is why i use the method described above. at least one pgc will play without any pauses what-so-ever, whereas i have noticed with some titles, with a vob-id only demux, that one pgc will have (some) playback discontinuity due to non-seamless connections AND the other pgc can have have small audio breaks due to padding.,

jel, here is where I am at and where I am stuck. I have encoded everything as per your intructions. I have a folder that is encoded that is done by PGC (with pgc2 unchecked) and another folder that is encoded that is done by vob id (to get the additional vobids to recreate pgc2.) I used Scenaid to make a script for the pgc folder and it works. But I can't figure out how to get the missing vobids into pgc2. I looked at Scenario Editor and it looks like PGC2 is already created. Any help?

jel
8th February 2006, 02:03
Any help?... no :p

okay well ... not sure if this is the best/only way to do this but its the method i would use.

open the pgc demux created scenario

and your additional vob-id data (video and audio)

create your additional tracks in the data editor (1 track per vob-id)
add your audio (following naming/setout etc as used in pgc_1 tracks created by scenaid) - dont forget to dummy any streams so that audio track layout is exact.
add your subtitles (if any)
add any scenes (chapter points) that are needed

open the scenario window
delete all content in pgc_2

then using cells from pgc_1 and added vob-ids, recreate layout for pgc_2, using the ifo for correct layout(chapters and cells)

here is what i did.. i first numenu'd the menu.. brought it from 400K+ to 170ish K.. i did vobid demux ( i left all audios enabled except 0x81 (stream 2) because its just a 2 channel version of 0x80. i like commentary so i kept the other 4. i did the extras at 1800. the resulting dvd had a main movie bitrate of 2400.. it plays great. id have to say the main movie picture is acceptable, but not the best (the extras are really low). some movies do ok with that low a bitrate but this one didnt. i tried a run with dvdrb and similar results.. it's just the bitrate is too low. im gonna do some experimenting with filtering.. also i only did 1 pass so i would advise more passes on this one.

jel: I am getting an error when compiling in Scenarist. I followed your above instructions to the letter. Funny thing is that error in Scenarist is in PGC8. Here is what it said:

"Error Line21 at 00:51:16:23 or 00:00:00:00 is across the cell boundary(cell #27 and #28).
Error Line21 at 00:51:47:12 or 00:00:00:00 is across the cell boundary(cell #29 and #30).

Error MuxFromDB:MuxVTS failed

I get a lot of those error lines above (the ones that mention ... is across cell boundary), are those important or should I not worry about them? Any idea about why PGC8 is causing Scenarist to error out? Thanks.

jel
10th February 2006, 02:31
line 21 errors relate to closed captions (not something i have to deal with in PAL land .. )
i was under the impression though, that this was a warning only and would not stop a successful mux ...

in my opinion, most 'vob mismatch' errors are a result of audio crc errors. you could try demuxing the audio manually (try PGC_demux) and run the audio through 'delaycut' with fix crc errors selected.
then substitute this 'fixed audio' for the audio in vts_08 tracks.

hope that helps

It wasn't VTS 8 that was the problem, it was PGC 8 in VTS 2. BTW, that delaycut thing worked, but my final dvd was just over 6 gigs. Looks like I gotta encode again at a lower bitrate. Will let you know how it turns out.

Edit: Just a curious question here, would this movie have been easier to backup using Muxman? Or because of the manual intervention on Scenarist, would it not be possible to use Muxman with this movie? Thanks.

the pgc demux, or the additional vobids added?

Hi!

I realize that this may be considered blasphemy but, since you've apparently been going at this for more than two weeks, I wonder if you might consider using commercial software, my personal favorite, DVD95Copy, as I did to successfully rip and compress the Region 1 "Uncorked" version?

Are you using the 'new' audio that you demuxed manually from pgc_demux? When running through delaycut was there any delay that should have been selected? Alternatively run the original audio (which was demuxed with dif4u) through ac3fix.exe (in the numenu folder). This will correct crc errors.

hoops10

"Are you using the 'new' audio that you demuxed manually from pgc_demux?"

I used Scenaid to create a script for Scenarist from the pgc-demux so I take it, it is using the correct audio. As far as PGC8 goes, yes after running it thru delaycut, I used that in Scenarist (just renamed it to whatever DIF4U named it originally.)

"When running through delaycut was there any delay that should have been selected?"

I will double check this one.

"Alternatively run the original audio (which was demuxed with dif4u) through ac3fix.exe (in the numenu folder)."

Do you mean do this for PGC1 (the main movie)? I didn't get any crc errors with this one.

@ hoops
very strange, i can see no reason why you would have any problems with a pgc demux of the main movie ....
what is the asset length of the main movie video and audio as reported by scenarist in the data window?
doess the audio in the pgc_1 track have a different "start time to video" other than 0?

is the delay constant?

could you also post your dif4u and scenaid logs for the pgc demux?

cheers

"what is the asset length of the main movie video and audio as reported by scenarist in the data window?"

The asset length of the main movie video shows the data end time at 02:06:58:25 and the main movie audio as 02:06:59:05.

"does the audio in the pgc_1 track have a different "start time to video" other than 0?"

I don't see this anywhere in Scenarist. What I do see is the Data Start Time for the main movie audio and it says 00:00:00:00. Is that what you mean?

to be honest mate, i have no idea why you are getting synch issues ??!?!!

from what i can see from the logs, the layout, and the info you have provided, i can see no reason why this is happening ...

are the additional vob-ids also out of synch?

as a guestimate, how much out of synch is the audio?

.... when you press play (menu) to access the main movie, does anything else get played before? a warning? or a still?

did you pre-process this dvd?

dont worry mate, we will get to the bottom of this .... eventually :p

What the crazy thing is, is that its PGC1 that is out of sync. This is the main movie PGC that I never touched (other than encoding.) PGC2 was the one that I added the other vobids to. And the sync with that PGC is fine.

Yes, I pre-processed that dvd. I Vobblanked some of the other vtses before I backed up the dvd, but I checked the dvd right after I used Vobblanker and no sync probs. BTW, the dvd goes right to the menu (with the use of Jump2PGc and PGCEdit)

jel

...its PGC1 that is out of sync.... PGC2 was the one that I added the other vobids to. And the sync with that PGC is fine.

well ... see heres the thing hoops .... is PGC_1 out of synch the whole movie?
and is PGC_2 in synch the whole movie?

if so, i really am getting a bit confused as PGC_2 == PGC_1 +/- a few vobids ... that is, it re-uses the same video + audio for the majority of the movie, so if one is in synch ... shouldnt they BOTH be in synch?BTW, the dvd goes right to the menu (with the use of Jump2PGc and PGCEdit)not quite what i asked ... if you press 'play movie' on the menu for pgc_1 does it go directly to pgc_1 or does it play another pgc/vts first? what i am thinking is somehow, when you play the extended version (pgc_1) it plays a blank title prior to the movie starting and this is messing up the audio ???

why dont you try rebuilding the re-authored files with the original dvd, see if that works, then POST-process with vobblanker?

hoops10

26th February 2006, 04:37
Well, I used the original dvd and still got sync problems. I have been doing some further investigations into this matter. I have noticed that the sync issues only occur in Chapters 1 thru 10. From Chapters 11 thru the end of the movie, the sync is perfect.

I have also noticed this. VTS 2 is the main movie vts. IT contains 17 pgcs, most of which are fairly small. PGC 1 is the uncorked edition, PGC 2 is the theater version. PGC8, however, is 1:08:54 in length. Everytime I have tried to backup this movie, I have had to run the AC3 from PGC8 thru delaycut and have it fix CRC errors. I checked what is in PGC8 and it looks to me like its the first half of the movie, which would be close to Chapters 1-10.

Could this be the problem? If so, how can I fix PGC8's audio without it causing sync issues?
