Hi,
I just encoded a DVD9 to DVD5 using the big 3 method (DOIF4u/ReAuthorist/Scenarist).
The resulting DVD is 4.39GB so it is oversized.
I have been told this is because the great amount of subs that's on the DVD (15), is that true ?
How can I adjust the bitrate in reauthorist then, so it will get around 4.33-4.36gb ? Why can't ReAuthorist calculate the subs in the bitrate. Now I have to reencode it all over again...

Try using 'the new big 3' with scenaid. You should find an improvement.

I have tried that too (with another DVD9 movie) and that gave me an undersized result (4.12GB) :(

It seems to be a case of bad luck. My dvds are usually spot on (except for the 50 MB safety margin I build in). Please check what dvd size you have set. A large amount of subs shouldn't be much of a problem.

The dvdsize reauthorist gives is 4.36GB (I checked that).
So your advise is to lower the size reauthorist gives with 50mb as a safety ?

I would certainly set the safety treshold. For oversize issues and because the outer ring on dvd-r is not always very good.

Ok I've started the encoding process again last night and set the size in ReAuthorist to 4.31GB (since it was +/- 0.04GB oversized ~ around 40MB).
Isn't it possible to predict this behavior since it's not always oversized (depends from dvd to dvd). Sometimes the size ReAuthorist gives is just perfect (resulting in a 4.36GB DVD) and sometimes it's oversized (like this DVD). If I would lower the size with 50MB each time I'll get undersized DVD's in some cases ?
I would like to have it at least 4.32-4.33GB big so there won't be too much space left that i could have used. And most important of all I'd like to prevent the need to encode it again (just takes too long) because it's too small or too big.

i set it 50mb down.. at 50mb spread out over an entire dvd, quality wise makes no difference you could detect by eye. the output of cce (and pretty much all encoders) varies by a little to what you specify in file size. its not the same like math transcoders like dvd skrink which can narrow size accurate to within kbs. I would still take a 4.31gb big 3 dvd over a 4.36gb shrink one. other methods that use encoders use default size under dvd size for the same reason and allow you to adjust closer but at your peril.
ultimately.. my decision is based on what i see on the tv vs. what i see looking at the purple side of my dvdr's

Ok I'll try that method in the future.
Thanks to all for the helpfull replies!

I'm more interested in why the scenaid one is so undersized....
almost looks like the compile is excluding something
