I hope this is in the correct place, if not I'm sorry. Anyway.

I have an AVI file I want to burn to a DVD. The language is in japanese so I also have a seperate SSA file that goes with it. Now, I couldn't figure out how to make the subtitles work by just burning them on the DVD, so I decided to encode the subtitles directly onto the AVI file. I used VirtualDub 1.6.12 and the Sub Station Alpha v2.x/4.x subtitling plugin to do this. The problem is, that for every 1 minute of encoding the file grows about 1 GB in size. How can I encode the subtitles on the video without it turning into a 120 GB AVI file? Thanks in advance to anyone who has information that can help me.

Hi penguinpoo. Please change the topic to a more informative title. (Forum rule #9). Thx, and good luck with your question...

What codec did you choose for the movie?

It can be due to two reasons:
1) You're not setting the video compression, and it defaults to uncompressed. Just set some codec and its parameters (you may want to read about 2-pass compression if you want to get a specific size and good quality).
2) You're setting the audio compression wrong, to uncompressed PCM. That also tends to take up space. Use Lame or Fraunhoffer MP3.

Read last step from this guide (http://www.divxland.org/permanentsubtitling.php) to properly setup VirtualDub.
