Simple to use cropping software?

I want to crop the black areas above and below a widescreen video, principally to get rid of some annoying logos.

I've never done any actual editing before, can someone suggest a simple to use program to acheive the above?

cropping the video will require you to reencode the entire video - which will lead to reduced overall quality...
