View Full Version : compressing VHS capture is blurry/off white

I've been trying to capture all my VHS anime into avi format so I can watch it on my computer. The capture comes out fine, it's just whenever I try to compress it it comes out slightly blurry and off white.

It is most noticable on character faces. Their faces do not come out the same color as the uncompressed capture. It looks kind of like desert heat.

I've tried xvid and divx, and divx comes out *slightly* better, but I think this is more due to the fact it's easier to compress divx. I've tried numerous switches and I just can't get it right. Anyone have any advice as to what switches to try? Or what codec to use? I have no use to play it on a DVD player and will just be playing them on my computer.

I'm using virtualdub 1.6.11, windows xp sp1, pentium4 2.8ghz, 1 gig ddr ram, ati 9800 pro, conexant 2388x vid cap card

Hi!

It may be helpful if you post a screen grab as an example...

OK, maybe I'm being a little picky I don't know but here they are:

Compressed (http://h1.ripway.com/xpyrate/capture/compressed.jpg)

Capture (http://h1.ripway.com/xpyrate/capture/capture.jpg)

I want it to look exactly like the capture, but again I have no idea what switch to use to keep it from blurring. I've tried making the bit rate higher but that has no noticable effect.

You'll probably want other people's opinions because, to my old eyes, the two images appear to be of quite similar appearance...

Well, I must admit it's more noticeable when the video plays looking like desert heat(that's the best description I can think of), as the pictures just look like the compressed is just lighter than the capture, which isn't how it looks when it is in motion. Maybe it's a light/color setting? I didn't fool too much which those as I didn't see anything written in the guides I was using.

I realise I may be just picky, and that's just the nature of the compression, I don't know.

EDIT:
Ok, I got it using divx 4.12 codec. Took me long enough. yeesh
