I used to have an Radeon AIW 8500DV as my vid/capture card and used the macrovision hack to allow capturing from protected sources. That card burned up and I'm now using an nVidia card with no VIVO. So, I need to buy a PCI capture card. I bought a 12 part documentary series on eBay on VHS. It was produced in the mid 80's and is deteriorating quickly. I want to digitize it, restore it as much as possible, and preserve it on DVD. However, it is Macrovision protected. The way I've been backing up analog video since the demise off my AIW is by using the analog inputs on my JVC miniDV camcorder then transferring it via firewire to Virtual Dub for editing and conversion. But with this series I can't. As soon as I hit the record button I get "Copy Failed!" on the LCD. According to JVC this message only appears when copy protection is detected. So, I guess it's time to get back to direct PC capture.

My question is, can anyone with a PCI capture card from ATI who knows that the hack is working (Disney backups are a sure sign it works) please post the model and MMC version they are using.

Other suggestions to solve this problem are gladly welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

I have had no luck with the hacks but I have heard that if you set up a dual monitor system, one "RGB" and the other a analog monitor, you make your analog the primary display when you are capping, the "MacroVision" is defeated.

Thanks rfmmars,

Do you know what models this works with? For instance, that trick wouldn't work with the TV cards. And at this point, I'm having problems locating a reasonably priced AIW. PCI cards are at a premium. Only the original Rage cards seem to be out there and those cards had a pretty crappy theater chip w/o hardware encoding. I had one of my kid's Disney tapes that was constantly getting stuck in the VCR. I tried deck to deck copying to get it on fresh tape. The copy was unwatchable. I tried capturing it with my AIW 8500 before I applied the hack and had classic Macrovision artifacts. After the hack it was perfect.

Alright, I've found a AIW Radeon 7500 PCI for a reasonable price. It'll be here in a few days. I should be able to use the same MMC version and hack I used with my 8500. Can anyone give me a heads up on installing and using this card with my nVidia? I don't need or want the GPU since I'll have my AGP card for display. All I want to do is use it for capture. I assume I install the display (Catalyst 3.8)/capture (WDM 6.14.10.621)/MMC (8.61) drivers just like I would with one card then select the adapter through the device manager. If I do that will MMC still be able to use the card for capture if the display adapter is the nVidia or will I have to switch to the Radeon for display to use the capture function?

I never did get the ATI Macrovision hack to work as it should, I could still see a slight lighting and darking on the video every few seconds. What the hack did do was enable me to use the VCR feature of MMC that allowed me to pause the video on Macrovision encoded DVD’s. It would not even go into MMC VCR mode on Macrovision encoded material before this (stand alone DVD player to PC video inputs). I ended up getting a stand alone DVD recorder (ilo DVDR04) that had firmware that was hackable to defeat the Macrovision. An added benefit was that was if I input a Macrovision encoded source into the DVD recorder and then took the output from the DVD recorder and connected it to my ATI A-I-W 8500DV’s inputs for recording on the computer, the Macrovision is defeated. Of course you could just as well use the hacked DVD recorder to record the material also.
