Hi all
I have created dvd vob files from my mpeg file and also added the subtitle by converting it from srt to sup. But the problem is that the letters in the subtitle of my dvd created files are not that smooth as were with the original mpeg file during playback.
Is it the case for all dvd converted subtitles??
I use txt2sub and ifoedit.

any suggestiongs?

Thanks

A DVD subtitle colour palette (the CLUT, colour look up table, inside the IFO files) contains 16 colours. But only four colours can be used per subpic, and usually it's the same four colours throughout the movie.

Normally one of the colours are used for a transparent background, one is used for the fill colour (main colour) of the subtitles (usually yellow, white or light grey) and one is used for the outlining of the subtitles, usually in black. That leaves only one colour (usually a grey shade) for anti-aliasing, i.e. making the transition between the black outline and the light fill colour smooth.

Thus, when you view DVD subtitles on the PC, they tend to look a bit jagged. However, they usually look just fine on a TV. I don't know the subtitle tool you mention, but I can highly recommend SubtitleCreator for making the DVD subtitles, before authoring in IfoEdit (or MuxMan, which I my first pick). IMO the subtitles created with SubtitleCreator even look better than some commercial made subtitles for DVDs...!

See this post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=673151#post673151) for further explanation on the subject.

You ask why the subtitles looked better as text subtitles combined with the "raw" MPEG stream. Well, this is because the software player you are using the play the video stream and display the subtitles is not limited to the above mentioned four colours. For the display on your PC the software player can use all possible shades of grey for the anti-aliasing in the subtitles...
