View Full Version : Splitting an avi ?, MJPEG encoded content

Hi, I have a 90MB AVI that I'd like to split. Problem is that it's on a 100MB hard drive. The AVI is a TV capture in MJPEG video and PCM audio. Is there a way to split the file into about three equal parts? I don't have another HD to copy parts to, and I'd rather not do any re-encoding. The idea is to do the split before filtering and compressing.
Thanks!

100 MB hard drive? lol, that's cutting corners a lot.
How do you ever expect to cut this? I am curious. You need at least 90 MB extra for you to put out the cut parts (3x30 MB) before you can delete the single 90 MB file, right?

The 90MB file was a mistake, I'm using PICVideo, and by accident set the quality to 20 instead of 19. Thus the extra large file. And without an extra HD to put 30MB pieces onto... I'm hoping against hope that the original file can be split without copying (and re-encoding)

Hi!
1) Are you SURE you're talking MB (megabytes) for both your filesize and hard drive size - or are one or both actually in GB (gigabytes)?
2) Just delete the 90"MB" file and use your PICVideo software at the lower setting...

1) Ooops, Yes I mean GB not MB.......
2) I have already lowered the setting,
But can I split my current file in the HD space I have?

Nope. Splitting when concerning avi means rewriting it afaik, thus you'll need
double space to do such thing.

But can I split my current file in the HD space I have? No, but if you have a DVD burner and about 30 blanks, you might be able to use a file splitting program to burn to DVDs (4.37Gb each)...

Ok, I need to get another HD.
Can I do a split without re-encoding (without quality loss?)

Once you've gotten your additional harddrive, you can use VirtualDub to split without re-encoding as follows (If it can handle a file that large):
Splitting with VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub
1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub or NanDub
2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
3) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
4) Move slider to approximate halfway point
5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
6) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
7) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie1of2.avi").
8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Move to End"
10) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End"
11) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save as AVI" - Save as a new filename (e.g. "Movie2of2.avi").

Hmmmm... I guess the last time I tried to save using the direct stream option (on a smaller test file), I ended up with a compleatly uncompressed file, since the size ballooned way up. But my latest test using your directions seems to have worked out.
When I opened the file with AVIcodec I get an "avi is incomplete(too small)" error. But WMP, and VdubMod plays it just fine. Is there a subtile problem with the split AVI that I need to fix?

Let us know how things work out when you've installed your new drive...
