God I hate having to bug the intelligensia with stuff like this, but I have spent two hours now searching the forum to no avail, and there was no useful documentation where I looked when downloading ffdshow.
I thought that it would "just work" as a filter after installation, and I could view x264 encodes with WMP. Installation of ffdshow went fine, but I can't figure out how to actually use it to decode x264 format AVIs.
Help please...

Go to FFDShow -> Video Decoder Configuration -> CoDecs and in the window on
the right find "H.264" and enable libavcodec in drop-down window. You may also
want to disable postprocessing somewhere in the middle of a left window, as it
harms h.264 visual behavior badly.

Hmmm... did that, and h.264 was already set for libavcodec.
However, when I try to open a file I encoded using x264 through MeGUI or GKnot in Window Media Player, it just sits there and nothing happens.
Xvid, OTOH, "just worked". Don't know what I'm doing wrong...

You don't know what x264 is? Have you completely missed this forum (http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=77)?

i wasn't aware that i was suppose to visit every forum and read every new thread that pops up, just so i can understand the extend of the question being asked
i did not read the "codec shootout" thread; because it is irrelevant when making s/vcd; only reason i knew about h.264, was because some fan-subs are switching to h.264
as for you, i don't care what members say, but your reply was rude (mine: sarcastic) even if the sentence ended with ?; 1st, you mis-quoted me, 2nd, the fact you think i'm blind enough to miss that forum and it's description (aka H.264)
