For those don't know what HandBrake is...
HandBrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) is a GPL'd multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter. HandBrake was originally available on the BeOS, but now has been ported over to MacOS X and to GNU/Linux. A Windows port is being worked on.
* Supported sources:
o Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (even encrypted)
o PAL or NTSC
o AC-3, LPCM or MPEG audio tracks
* Outputs:
o File format: MP4, AVI or OGM
o Video: MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer encoding)
o Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracks)
* Misc features
o Chapter selection
o Basic subtitle support (burned into the picture)
o Integrated bitrate calculator
o Picture deinterlacing, cropping and scaling
o Grayscale encoding
A win32 port is available here (http://handbrake.m0k.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=234#234)...I've made a quick test and this is not bad.
I'm wondering how the subtitles are muxed in the stream...I'll check out the sources.

not bad actually it's what i hoped Dr.DivX OSS gonna to be hehe :)
combining all this OSS power is really a very good idea and now that it's available for Windows is nice :)
yeah Bond it needs a file mode like Recode has it could be getting the better (non Dshow and unstable) Recode then :)

Nice, I've woundered why it was never for win32, I used to use it for simple and fast encoding backups with BeOS and OS X from the DVD source.

This is definately good news! Now there is finally a good free, easy to use alternative to Nero on Windows...

you still can't adjust resolution at all yet, but it is a promising start.

On OS X, HandBrake has always been a great tool to convert DVDs. I do sort of wish that it supported other file formats like .ts or .mpeg but I guess that's just not what the author has in mind.
Godd DVD conversion app though. No doubt about it.

btw can someone upload a small mp4 sample created by handbrake which uses b-frames and maybe b-pyramid?
Kurtnoise
23rd January 2006, 20:19
Handbrake doesn't use b-frames...
bond
23rd January 2006, 20:21
meh, why not?
btw i would also be happy about a non b-frame sample :)

which encoders ? xvid or x264 or FFMPEG ? in AVI or MP4 ?

FYI: HandBrake uses default settings for each encoders except subme=4 for x264.

thx a lot! :)
kurt, i guess you have mixed up the x264 encode, as your x264 sample was created by xvid ;)
had a look on the ffmpeg/xvid files and i found the following:
- ffmpeg: gov is stored together with every keyframe, which is not allowed in .mp4. as afaik thats handled fine already in mpeg4ip i assume handbrake uses atm an older version of mpeg4ip or there is another bug somewhere
- xvid: the vos, vosh, vol, userdata is stored together with the i-vops, also not allowed
the rest seems to be fine (ok things get really funky when b-frames get used, which handbrake doesnt do)
btw the files have 199 frames? is that wanted? or were 200 targeted?

aa yes, sorry. Redownload it...same link.

I used mp4box to cut the file with -splitx a:b command for 5s duration between a and b.
edit: HandBrake uses mpeg4ip routines for the muxing.

I used mp4box to cut the file with -splitx a:b command for 5s duration between a and b.ok this makes my testing unuseable, cause mp4box might propably rewrite at least parts of the file
would it be possible to create a small sample in handbrake itself without modifying the output afterwards?
edit: ok you are right, i should look at it myself ;)

- xvid: the vos, vosh, vol, userdata is stored together with the i-vops, also not allowedi noticed that the ffmpeg streams has far more keyframes than usual, which imho smells like a bug somewhere
btw how did you manage to limit the length of the clips?
i ask because x264 and ffmpeg had 2438 frames, whereas xvid only 2437

I encoded only one chapter from the title set...

I encoded only one chapter from the title set...so i assume every encode should have the same framenumber
edit: is it possible for you to check how many frames the chosen title set has on the dvd?

For this 1st chapter, with IFOEdit and ffdshow info I've 2419 frames...

For this 1st chapter, with IFOEdit and ffdshow info I've 2419 frames...so xvid, x264 and ffmpeg produced more output frames than there were in the input? :D

I only recently found out that Handbrake upgraded to 0.9.3 in November. I was interested because now it will accept any form of video input not just DVD. However I tried to load a few short mpeg's too test it out. No go though it complains that the MPEG's have no Title's and import fails.
Is anyone else having success with the latest handbrake, is there a way to get it too work. This is my file as read by mediainfo

All the Guis with threads in the first page here are working from a long while,
some, like Staxrip, has not been updated for long time as well,
just to know,
why post and read here and not going all on google then??
MeGUI relies on avisynt, that im not using since version 1
Staxrip, is not updated ,
and handbrake is a mac gui ported on windoz
Still have to find my gui. :helpful:

093 was horrible. 094 is not half bad now that they moved to x264.

I suppose it depends on your needs. Personally, I need to output to .avi, and I was surprised that that eliminated that capability with 094. I uninstalled it and reinstalled 093. A terrific little program for those without a doctorate in video sciences.

Yeah, it is easier for some people and a limitation to some. For me, inability for it to support Nero AAC encoder is a BIG turn off.

The solution is to fix your computer, handbrake certainly isn't the problem.
