View Full Version : Undisplayed VTS

I did a search in the forums here, and only found 2 threads relating to the issue I am having.

This one relating to silent movies:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=90658&highlight=missing+vts

And this one relating to VTS that are under 50mb:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=76661&highlight=missing+vts

Neither one really address my situation, but I wanted to show that I atleast made the effort to find the answers on my own, and to point out that these dont reflect my dilema. There is alot I want to try to explain so hopefully this iisnt confusing, or hard to follow.

I am attempting to do a back-up of my Xmen(first one) DVD, If I run the prepare phase stealing 50% from the extras I get an incredibly low "Feature Bitrate: 1,294kbs" (with DTS,6Ch,English & AC3,2Ch,English audio disabled "X")

In my input settings tab, I only get VTS 05. While the VIDEO_TS folder for the movie contais 12 VTS's in total. A couple of which are below 50mb, so I understand their reason, but others are 100+megs and even as high as 911megs. So I don't quite understand why they are not listed.

This is a 2DVD set, and the "extras" on DVD1 (the one I am doing) are not seperate items on the dvd menu. they work by enabling "Enhanced Viewing Mode" under the "Special Features" menu. It says:

With this feature activated. 6 deleted Scenes will branch automatically througout the film whenever you see this symbol (/). In addition to theses scenes. There are 17 places where you can jump to Behind-the-scenes footage during the sections which display this icon (X). Please press select when this (X) is displayed. Note that the commentary will play over the deleted scenes when you select the commentary in conjunction with this feature. (option to choose on / off)

So is it possible that it is not detecting these "extras" because they are interweaved throughout the film (while technically they are just links/jumps to other VTS's)?? Or possibly because they are on seperate audio tracks?

I would basically like to greatly reduce the quality of these delete/behind-the-scenes extras and hopefully get my "Feature Bitrate" to 3000kbs+.

Is there a way to force DVDRB to list all VTS's?? Atleast that way I could use Opt-rb to reduce the bitrate for those extras, thus increasing the Feature bitrate.

I know I could use DVDDecrypter in IFO mode, to copy all the VTS to my HDD, but I dont know how I can then set the individual bitrates so I can encode and rebuild to DVD5.

Any help in my little project here would be greatly appreciated, please let me know if I have left anything out or needs further clarification.

Add vts_min_size=1 to rebuilder.ini under [Options]. You'll see all the VTS. It is in the Hidden Settings of the manual btw.

Thanks for the quick reply Spyhawk, but that looks like that only partially worked.

By setting "vts_min_size=1" My 'Input Settings' tab now lists:

VTS 04 (19mb)
VTS 05 (5,601mb)
VTS 06 (18mb)
VTS 08 (30mb)
VTS 12 (12mb)

So a couple of my under 50mb ones showed up, but I am still missing over half of them, including some of the major ones:

VTS 01 (-1mb)
VTS 02 (373mb)
VTS 03 (373mb)
VTS 07 (1mb)
VTS 09 (911mb)
VTS 10 (704mb)
VTS 11 (7mb)

As you can see above, over 2gigs worth of VTS's don't appear in my 'Input Settings' tab, preventing me from reducing their bitrate.

I know most people would either give up on this by now, or maybe just accept the "Feature Bitrate: 1,294kbs", but I just have a desire to overcome this and to hopefully learn from it.

??? Are you sure your rip was done correctly... are there IFO files for these VTS's?

The only way a VTS won't show in the selection screen is if it has no IFO (which is illegal) or if it has no audio (it wouldn't show because the selection screen is actually meant for selecting audio to remove).

Is this the NTSC version of the disc? I own that one, and will run it through again to take a look at it if it helps.

Some of those "Extras" you mention are seamless branching selections and are interleaved into the video itself -- you wouldn't be able to remove those without taking out the ILVU.

@betard
By the way it's always a good idea to tell which version of RB you're using. ;)

This isn't related to the non appearing VTS but interesting if you have ILVU parts on your DVD.

I am using DVDRB v1.04 and the dvd is NTSC. I am also using CCE SP.v2.70.02.04, not sure if it matters though since I have yet to make it to the encoding step. Sorry for all the pictures, but I figured it would be easier if people could see what I was talking about.

As far as I know I am doing it correctly, insert dvd, choose source path, steal 50% from extras, click "prepapre"

Here is my dvdrb input settings tab:

Here is my Preview/Edit Tab (showing feature bitrate):
http://www.lovehate.ca/doom9/dvdrb_xmen_prev.jpg

I read about RB-Opt, and thought that might be the key to problem, I could load it up and manually adjust the "deleted scenes/behind-the-scene" bitrate down to the 500min(CCE) that was set.

At first I was still missing some VTS's, then I 'unchecked' "Hide Vob-IDs of insignificant size" and the rest showed up. As seen below (I have linked some together so they would all fit in the window):
http://www.lovehate.ca/doom9/rb-opt_xmen.jpg

Some of the problem VTSs such as VTS 09, appear to be set at a bitrate of 6000, and I am unable to uncheck "autosize" in order to "Tweak Cells". Previewing VTS 09, gives me about 10secs of Blank(black) video.

Despite VTS 09 being about 911mb:
http://www.lovehate.ca/doom9/video_ts_xmen.jpg

911mb seems like an awful lot for blank video, so something must be wrong there.

I am not 100% on all the terminology, what is ILVU and what does it stand for?

you are looking at the wrong thing

vts 9 is vts_09_1.vob .. its only 10kb

vts_09_0.vob is the menu, and cannot be compressed wiith dvdrb

same with vts_10_0.vob

so apparently, there are 1.6gb of menu files (likely extras in the menu titleset) that rb currently cant handle. You will have to wait till menu encoding is enabled, try with dvd shrink, or use numenu4u.

I'm concerned that you are using v1.04? It's outdated and there have been numerous updates since then (v1.05, v1.05.1, v1.05.2, and v1.06). Even if there were a problem -- it very possibly could have been corrected in one of the last four releases...

i remember doing this disk, im sure its a menu issue, but yes pelase also update to 1.06

I'll get a new version and try that at home, just using the one at work a buddy had installed on one of the systems no one really uses.

For $30 its worth it just to be able to do it at home while I am sleeping.

just remember regardless of the version if the bulk of the info is in a menu vob (the xxx_0.vob) you wont be able to encode it, it is copied as is

You'll still have a problem with those huge menu files. I'm working on the menu encoding module now -- and should start testing next week.

sweet!!!!!!!!! this is the perfect disk for it as the menus are unnecessarily, and rediculously, huge

side note, will you include still framing as an option for menus as well as straight reencoding?

jdobbs

First I want to just get them encoding properly. Then I'll look at any possible bells and whistles.

Look forward to it! The more I use dvdrb, and the more I rip, the more I want to learn. As I said I am sure most would have just said "screw it" by now.... but I was really interested in the "why's" of this situation.

Thanks for the education on the matter. ;)

vobblanker will make short work of those large menu files . xmens bloated menu file(s) are actually unreferenced material (repeats of video already in the other files.) Not sure why its even there.

I went through this disc sometime in December, I believe it was the X-Men 1.5 DVD and it featured alot of extras and audio tracks. With some clever editing, I believe I was able to fit this to a DVD5 disc. If not then you can definitely get some high bitrates on the disc by blanking unnecessary extras and audio tracks.:sly:
