but im not getting any audio encoding done with any of the encoders, winamp, faac or nero

ita a small vob file with ac3 track

some "thoughts":

1- Automkv encodes the avisynth script and ac3 file created by megui

2- i formated my pc last week and to avoid downloading all the megui 3rd party tools i backed up the megui folder and copied it to same place afterwards, does that affect megui inner workings?

also, does megui download any filters to avisynth plugins folder? because i might be missing some(ac3 decoder?) because of step 2.

EDIT: yes like i thought, nic audio was missing from avisynth plugins, its working now.

thanks everyone for the help

When I try to encode an MKV into an Xvid file with a profile that worked before, xvid_encraw.exe gets an error and needs to close like 1/4 way through the encoding process... I closed all processes, and I have no clue why this is happening... Seems to be since the update... anyone know where i can get the last version of xvid_encraw.exe so I can test this theory? I have no clue whats going on...

Yeah, I noticed this bug a while back. MeGUI does not work with the optimized NeroAacEnc, for some odd reason. Just forgot to report :p
It's not megui... it's a nero bug...

I have had problem to encode a movie for MP4 format. The video script is this:
DirectShowSource("H:\Rurouni_Kenshin\[AnimeP2P]Rurouni_Kenshin_Movie_CD1.avi", fps=23.976, convertfps=true, audio=false)
ConvertToYV12

megui already includes the latest version

Yes I know but I meant the version just before the newest... I already forced an update in MeGUI twice just to make sure the file wasnt corrupt...

I am in the process of encoding a tv show and it seems to be working fine... its long MKV movies (in HD) that it seems to be crashing during... I have, however, encoded HD MKVs before the update fine... so i am thinking that this newer version has a bug with it, because I have not done anything to my computer before the update, everythis is the same as it was, but all of a sudden xvid_encraw.exe is crashing 25% thru encodes...

hi dudes
is it possible to add several encoding jobs at once?
I have to encode many little files and it just sux to do the very same clicks with every avs file again (i've already generated all avs files with dgindex)

@carpo: uninstall .net 3.5 and reinstall it.
crappy Vista SP1 is screwing a lot of stuff, even drivers...

more details are welcome...

it even does this if you install vista (32/64bit) SP1 from the DVD
from Microsoft

Can anyone post an optimal script, for converting clean DVD movie source to Ipod touch compaitible Mp4.

I ran some tests using megui, using the PD-Iphone profile, 650 bit rate, and automated 3 pass, 560 * 346 ( i think) and the quality was good, but still seemed a bit pixelated and blocky at times (even with 3 passes and original dvd source).

I think the problem may be in my script, it is the most minimal, just outlineing the size, and borders, and a bit of saturation.

Can anyone post a good script I can use?

mroz
19th March 2008, 15:32
Is Ipone using h264 or an mp4 asp? Even h264 with lots of the nice options disabled might be hardpressed with many sources to give you a good result at that res & bitrate.

If you want informed comment you'll need to post a link to a sample of your source & your existing script. Someone else might then take a look, though probably not me as I'm short of time atm.

Edit: I have no idea what the Ipone profile is, as there's no profile here of that name.

Drillakilla
19th March 2008, 15:46
It's basically for my Ipod touch, which uses the same videos as an iphone.

It can take H264 in an mp4 container.

Now I have had some excellent results using this program called handbreak (also h264 in mp4) but that program doesn't give you the freedom you have with megui (if anything the quality was great , but lacked some colour) , so would like to get it right with megui

mroz
19th March 2008, 15:59
If the profile is a custom one, post it as well.

Hm, so baseline, no b-frames, 1 ref, no cabac? That's quite restrictive, but if you've got good results at the same spec with handbrake it must be possible.

Drillakilla
19th March 2008, 16:11
I am at work now, so can't really post many details, but the Profile was not custom, but came with the megui bundle ( along with profiles for PS3 etc etc )

But it is possible to achieve high quality as the handbrake tests have shown, and I would much prefer using megui and avisynth as it can be tailered to your needs.

Do you think it could be the profile I am using that is not optimum?

mroz
19th March 2008, 16:19
What's the profile name? I have a PD-iPhone profile, but no Ipone profile.

Edit: ah, I see you do mean PD-iPhone, having edited your original post :)

I don't know why you're getting better results with Handbrake. You really need to do some further research or get help from someone familiar with Megui & Handbrake, who encodes for such devices. I've never used Handbrake myself, nor baseline with x264.

OTTOMH however, I'd be more inclined to compare x264 command line options first, before looking at any preprocessing the two apps are doing.

I still suggest you post more details when you can though, as I imagine any reader who can help is more likely to, the better you define the problem.

Best of luck.

Does MeGUI allow batch encoding for avi/mkv/mp4 video files? If it does, how can I do it? I have around a hundred files to encode and it would take at least half an hour setting them up manually.

Thanks.

I just updated to Vista Ultimate and MeGUI keeps telling me to update to Framework 3.5, which I already did.
It keeps detecting 2.0 SP1. What should I do?

Same problem here on my Vista x64 SP1. No matter what I do, and how I reinstall .Net - MeGUI always thinks for some reason that it must use .Net 2.0 SP1 instead of .Net 3.5. I guess we'll have to wait for fix, this forum is choke full of the same complaints as yours and mine. I'm sure MeGUI author is already looking hard into this problem. Patience please :)

I'm having a problem with the preview window, i searched this topic but couldn't find this problem adressed.

My source has an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 which should , according to the net, be approx 1920 x 816 pixels.

I am loading this script:
LoadPlugin("H:\PROGGIES\DGAVCDEC\DGAVCDecode.dll")
AVCSource("Movie.dga", deblock=false)

Well, i am 100% sure the source has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (letterboxed)
But the preview, even after clicking "orig size" does not display the full resolution it seems. I would guess it's about 10% less both vertically and horizontally. Is there anyway to make it display properly? I want to see exactly what i am cropping when using the script creator later on.

I am testing this on a 1920 x 1080 screen so i'm pretty sure the preview is not displaying the original size.

I have a problem transcoding XviD files to mp4 files for my iPod touch. Specifically, it is an audio transcode problem. I use the iPod 5.5 profile for video and ND-AAC LC 96 kbps profile for audio. I have directed MeGUI to neroaacenc.exe.

I create a simple .avs file using the AviSynth script creator using the .avi file as the video input. I then select the .avi file as the audio input as well. When I select auto encode and it adds the project to the queue, the audio transcode step will preprocess for several minutes before it says it starts encoding. The encode will make no progress before a Windows pop-up appears which says "Neroaacenc.exe has stopped working."

I am running Windows Vista SP1 and the latest stable build of MeGUI with all updates installed. I have the latest stable build of ffdshow. When I take a single VOB file that I decrypted from a DVD, then use d2v creator, avisynth script creator, and use the same video and audio profiles, it works without any difficulties. I have tried using other XviD files to no different result.

I apologise in advance if this has been brought up before, I did a search and could not find any posts on the topic. I'm sure there is some installation/step I must have omitted but I can't for the life of me think what it is.

the fastest way is using the One Click Encoder (Tools/One Click Encoder) and create your own profile for your encodings.

the fastest way is using the One Click Encoder (Tools/One Click Encoder) and create your own profile for your encodings.

I tried that, but One Click Encoder only accepts .vob/.mpg/DGindex files, my input is .avi/.mkv/.mp4. I figured a .bat file that creates .xml job files can help with batch encoding, is there an alternative that's easier and more flexible to changes?

Thanks

I`m new to MeGUI. I have update to the latest version of everything. I am backing up my HD-DVD and Blueray movies to DVD9.

I have been using Nero Recode to recode the videos but I want to switch to MeGUI.

My process is:
1) rip with AnyDVD HD
2) use eac3to to create MKV and AC3
3) Recode MKV to fit on DVD9
4) Merge MP4 and AC3 with mkvmerge

In MeGUI, whenever I try to open my AVS I get the following error:

AviSynth script error:
AVIFileSource: couldn`t open file

My AVS lools like:
AviSource("C:\Users\racerx\Desktop\Movie.avi")
#deinterlace
crop( 0, 142, 0, -142)
#resize
#denoise

(Movie.avi is the renamed MKV created by eac3to)

Any ideas as to why this AVS script is failing to load properly? Thanks.

You can't just rename "movie.mkv" to "movie.avi"

Instead of avisource, try DirectShowSource on your mkv:
DirectShowSource("C:\Users\racerx\Desktop\Movie.mkv")

You can't just rename "movie.mkv" to "movie.avi"

Funny enough, but that is what I do in order for Nero Recode to accept it. It won't accept the MKV file, but if I rename to AVI Nero Recode will work without problem.

I renamed the file back to MKV and AviSynth works fine now. Thanks.

You use crop before resize, so your final video are still 560*320. iPod Touch resolution are 480*320, so with 560*320 your movie will be resize again into iPod to 480*274 to fit in touch screen.

Maybe you want use 480*274 Instead 560*320 or maybe you want use crop after resize, so final video will be 476*320, good aproximation to 480*320 :)

In other side, your profile can be tweaked a little. Try this new profile:

Forece Baseline Profile and 3.0 Level
Mode: two or three passes (if you want, you can use turbo mode)
Bitrate: for your resolutions, you can start with 600 to 750
Enable Deblocking: I like use -2:-1
ME algorithm: MultiHex or ESA, or you can try TESA too.
Subpixel: 7 -RDO Level 2
Number Reference Frames: 5
Mixed reference frames: Enable
No DCT & No fast: Enable
All partitions except P4x4

Hi guys, I have a question in the General Questions category:

Is there a way to make MeGUI perform batch operation on video files? What I mean is that I have a bunch of episodes I want to convert, they all need exact same processing in avisynth, the only difference in avs script is thus the file name. Must I copy-paste a bunch of avs files and change file name in each and then manually add and queue each one in megui? Can I just somehow give the directory path and an avs template to go by and let it fill in the names for each file in the dir then auto cue them with selected encoding settings? The avs template in avs creator doesn't seem to work like that. Am I condemned to brute force manual processing?

I did some tests previously on 480 x 274, and it seems to look a lot better on 560 x 320, even though the ipod doesn't display that resolution as native.

It's like when I had my old 42 inch tv, I would feed hd VIDEO through it and they would look a lot better than regular dvds, even though the tele was SD.

Thanks for your help mate, I will try this in the weekend, I know this is a lot to ask but can you just give me a short description of what each of those things does, I would like to understand the changes i make, thanks again

When I started I couldn't even render because there was an error on the first job. This error was appearing without notifications os I could know who to fix the problem. I installed and uninstalled many times to fix this problem. When I found how to fix it, by uninstalling AviSynth, another problem came to me.

I'm trying to render a Counter-Strike clip with the smallest size as possible. The problem is that it gives me a file of 145-150 Kb that I can't even read. I will show you what it does and my settings.

In my test.avs I got this ( I know nothing about avisynth ) :
Code:

AVISource("untitled2.avi")
ConvertToYV12()

When I open my avs file it looks to work properly. My clip is 1280x960
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/5870/avisynthopeningay1.jpg

My megui settings are as follow :
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/6761/confight2.jpg
I use codec x264 and File format MP4.
I click enqueue and start the job.

It only takes 30 seconds each, for a 2 GB file of 56 seconds.

When I go in my folder I find this
Test.mp4 138 KB No images.

I need help and I tried to make an easy understandable thread. Thank you.

I updated megui the other day and all of a sudden I could not encode anymore. I keep getting this error message even though I have been using this settings before without problems. What am I doing to get such message?

E:\MeGUI\tools\x264\x264.exe: unknown option -- aq-sensitivity

BTW, does it matter where (position-wise) I place "--aq-strength 0.5 --aq-sensitivity 11" in the commandline?

@francoeur - what version of avisynth are you using?

Just to troubleshoot for now, change your encoding settings to const. quality instead of 3pass

Does you output "test.mp4" play at all? in VLC? Run mediainfo on that file, what does it say?

Well, 2 things to try:

1) DirectShowSource instead of AviSource. The later does some funky things on my machine, DSSource is far more reliable for me.

2) try using that command line that appears at the bottom of settings window in a DOS window (substituting full input/output filename paths of course), and see if x264.exe will do the same thing without MeGUI in the mix.

The following script of avisynth play well in MPC but it fails in megui

LoadPlugin("C:\DvdTools\DGMPGDec\DGDecode.dll")
LoadPlugin("d:\movies\ColorMatrix.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\DvdTools\filters\RemoveGrainSSE3.dll")
LoadPlugin("D:\movies\VSFilter.dll")

mpeg2source("D:\movies\PrisionBreak\prision.d2v")
ColorMatrix("Rec.709->Rec.601",opt=0,hints=false,threads=0,InputFR=false, OutputFR=true)
crop(0, 2, 720, 568)
TextSub("D:\movies\PrisionBreak\21_down.ssa")
TextSub("D:\movies\PrisionBreak\21_up.ssa")
Lanczos4Resize(688, 384)
RemoveGrain(mode=2)

When I open it in megui, the window of preview appears, and when I close it, also closes megui window after 1 or 2 seconds.

The problem seems to reside in the version of Vsfilter. With the versions 2.38, 2.37, 2.36 does not work, with the version 2.35 it works.

What's wrong ?
It is normal this behavior.

Is there a way to encode cropped?

I have 1920x1088 Pixels which shall be reencoded to 1280x720.
Currently I use a simple resize which also includes, that the black lines (borders) in some/most movies are resized and reencoded.

Is there a way to encode "cropped" at lets say 1920*792 and let Megui or anything else ;) add the borders so that the SA-compatibility is still given. (1280*720 Pixels Video)

I'm trying to encode dv footage of wakeboarding. We mainly use it for video coaching purposes so I need to be able to smoothly seek and framestep back and forward.

With MPC 6.4.9.0 I seem to be able to framestep forward with all the x264 profiles but not backwards. If I set both the Keyframe interval and Min. GOP size to 1 I can then use the seek bar to smoothly seek back and forth but still not the framestep back key and of cource I have to more than double the bit rate.

Is there a player/decoder that will smoothly seek back and forward with P and B framed material with 25 - 250 framed GOPs? (I'm decoding with ffdshow Sep 30 2006 20:19:55) I seem to be able to seek easyly with some profiles on a Mac and very slowly with a lot of CPU useage with CE Main profile in Quicktime on my PC.

Where do I download the "Editing only" profile for Megui? Could this be what I'm looking for or is this really a playback/decoder issue?

I've been pretty happy with the PD-PS3-Xbox360 profile, I use 1500 bitrate for Standard Def DVDs and usually shoot for around 1 GB on my ~45 minute HD captures of network TV. The HD captures usually finish in anywhere from 3 to 5.5 hours. I'm using an AMD X2-6000 CPU.

I've encoded lots of sportsvideos with x264.

You can put your x264 videos in avis (by using avc2avi and then muxing them) and use MPC with the internal avi splitter enabled, or you could use virtualdub to go back and forth.

Decreasing the GOP-size will indeed make your player more responsive when going back.

So I'm encoding to x.264, and I want to queue up a job after it finished encoding to mux it using the MeGUI mp4 muxer. My problem is, the MP4 muxer Video Input field is not editable, it only takes input from the Open File dialog, which means it has to be a file that already exists, but obviously the file doesn't exist yet, since it's still being encoded. My workaround so far is to create a dummy file with the same name as the expected output file, queue up the mux job using the dummy file, then delete the dummy file.

Is there a better way to do this?

Also, this is a bit weird, but I've discovered that when using MeGUI to encode anamorphically, my player _will_ show the image correctly if I tell MeGUI to use an MKV container instead of MP4 for the video. This only happens if I don't mux any audio in - as soon as I use MeGUI, mkvmerge or anything else to try and add audio, subtitles, or chapters, suddenly it stops playing in the correct aspect ratio. Even running mkvmerge to re-package the original MKV without adding any other tracks will break it. Is there anything about the x264.exe MKV output code that would make it any different than mkvmerge or MeGUI's muxer? It's a bit baffling.
I'm aware I'm quoting an old post, but I'm having the exact same problem.

I'm trying to convert an anamorphic DVD to a x264 mkv, this is my workflow
1 - Create d2v using DGindex
2 - Create AVS script
3 - Run megui (x264, hq-slow, anamorphic)

This produces a mkv video file which plays perfectly in WMP. The aspect ratio is recognized and I get a 16:9 image like I should.

The problem comes when I want to mux the audio in. I have the original AC3 track and I've tried to mux it in via megui and mkvmerge, but both give the same result. As soon as I take my video-only mkv file, and mux in the audio, the aspect ratio gets lost. If I open the muxed file in WMP it gets displayed in 4:3.

I've tried numerous settings, but just can't get the video and audio muxed while maintaining the AR.

I don't want to resize or crop (therefore I want to end up with an 853x480 video as it displays in mplayer when I play the VOBs). With AutoMKV I can do this by just selecting it's anamorphic option and telling it to use original resolution.

There's no problem with seeking in mkv and mp4, but going back frame by frame doesn't always work. That depends on splitter, decoder (use ffdshow) and player. I just found these solutions to work.

The slower your computer is the smaller your GOP-size must be. Try it, it doesn't work really smooth and flawless.

You can download and try one of my files (with keyint 125, still quite large, I tried to keep the files small) from: http://www.nkbv.nl/sportklimmen/media/Wedstrijdvideos/4237.html

The DVD resolution is 720*xxx (where xxx depends on PAL or NTSC) and it's encoded anamorphically.
So in Advanced config, select 720 as resolution and check Signal AR.

You can also take up the habit of going back one key frame and then frame step forward. Works with MPC (Shift Left) with its internal MP4 and MKV splitters.

It just came back to me that I did some testing with zoomplayer a long time ago. And it works/does what you want. Just 2 minutes ago I retried with an MP4 and an MKV and it works (using zoomplayer 5.01, a bit old, ffdshow and Haali Media Splitter).

The strange thing is that the encoding can runm for everything from 10minutes to 45min. Once i got to about 40% but most of the time, it end at 10-20% completion.

Am i doing somthing wrong? Can it be because im changing resolution? The orginial DVD is in 720x480. But the aspect ratio gets wacked, so im using 720x400 (16:9).

Absolutely not. I get the same error and the log file says nothing relevant. There is something wrong with the latest version of MeGUI.

try updating x264. i just uploaded a newer version to the auto-update server.

then the problem must be somewhere on your side since i finished encoding a whole movie right now and it works perfectly.
i suggest you to run some memory tests (memtest86 for example) and some "burn-in" system tests to ensure your system is stable when heavily stressed.

I have found that x264 mp4 files encoded in MeGUI (DXVA-SD-HQ profile without b-pyramid merged with PS3-XBOX profile) will crash Sony Vegas Pro 8.0b if they have no audio, or will only show the audio in Vegas Pro 8.0b if they are muxed with audio in MeGUI (in which case Vegas gives the message "video stream attributes could not be determined").

On the other hand if I encode with x264vfw in VirtualDub and mux in Yamb then the file opens perfectly in Vegas Pro.

They both play fine in Quicktime and VLC.

If I open the MeGUI-encoded mp4 in Vegas 7 it is reportedly decoded by the Quicktime decoder qt7plug.dll. If I open the x264vfw-encoded mp4 in Vegas 7 it is reportedly decoded by the MainConcept decoder mcmp4plug.dll but shows a blank green screen (but at least doesn't crash like it does in Vegas Pro 8).

What is going on here? What is different in these files or how can I find out what is different? Is there a way to change the settings in MeGUI to make the files compatible with Vegas, or is there some post-processing I can do to fix them?

Thanks!

That one still only shows the audio in Vegas i'm afraid, with the same message "video stream attributes could not be determined".

I think the problem must be before the muxing stage as the crashes are happening with files that contain no audio. There's something different about the x264 file that x264vfw is endoding/wrapping from the x264 that x264/MeGUI is encoding/wrapping but I don't know what it is.

Gspot container for the x264vfw version is showing:

isom MP4 Base Media v1 [ISO 14496-12-2003]
-avc1: MP4 Base w/ AVC ext [ISO 14496-12:2005]
...

but for the MeGUI version those lines are the other way around:

-avc1: MP4 Base w/ AVC ext [ISO 14496-12:2005]
isom MP4 Base Media v1 [ISO 14496-12-2003]
...

Could this be relevant and how would I change it if it is?

@nhope:

run avinaptic on both files (working & non-working in vegas); it will give you lots of information, and perhaps show a difference in settings that you used between the vfw, and cli version

nhope

Thanks for the avinaptic tip. Useful utility.

OK so I've narrowed this down now.

x264 in MeGUI with default x264 settings will not crash Vegas, but with the PD-PS3-Xbox360 profile does crash Vegas.

There's a lot of differences in the profiles to work through to find the culprit. Which settings in the PS3-Xbox profile should I try resetting to default first?

nhope
17th April 2008, 19:03
CE-QuickTime profile does not crash Vegas so the problem is in the difference between that profile and PS3-Xbox.

Edit: CE-Mainprofile is OK too.

@nhope

CE-QuickTime has 1 B-frame, no I 8x8 vs. PS3-Xbox profile has 3 B-frame, yes I 8x8; this might be the difference causing Vegas to act that way.

Edit: I just check vfw x.264 default settings and I 8x8 is enabled by default, and earlier you said it imported into Vegas fine - so this suggests the problem might be >1 B-frame

The aspect ratio is recognized and I get a 16:9 image like I should.
As soon as I take my video-only mkv file, and mux in the audio, the aspect ratio gets lost.
Using the --engage keep_bitstream_ar_info (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1126498#post1126498) mkvmerge option should fix your problem.

I think this MKVMerge option should be made default in MeGUI. Or at the very limit, make it default for anamorphic jobs?

In trying to track down why some of my MeGUI sessions were failing, I noticed the following:

If I use the 'D2V Creator' function in MeGUI, the d2v file starts with:
Stream_Type=1
MPEG_Type=2
iDCT_Algorithm=6
YUVRGB_Scale=1
Luminance_Filter=0,0
Clipping=0,0,0,0
Aspect_Ratio=4:3
Picture_Size=720x480
Field_Operation=1
Frame_Rate=23976 (24000/1001)
Location=0,0,0,21203e

If I use DGIndex standalone on exactly the same file, the d2v file starts with:
Stream_Type=1
MPEG_Type=2
iDCT_Algorithm=6
YUVRGB_Scale=1
Luminance_Filter=0,0
Clipping=0,0,0,0
Aspect_Ratio=4:3
Picture_Size=720x480
Field_Operation=0
Frame_Rate=29970 (30000/1001)
Location=0,0,0,21203e

If I interpret this correctly, something that MeGUI does is causing a difference in Frame Rate. Since MediaInfo also says the frame rate is 29.97, I'm inclined to believe DBIndex.

But if anyone can shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks. I tracked down the Vegas problem to Adaptive DCT / I8x8. It crashes if you try to open a file encoded with that option.

I'm now using my own "compatibility" profile, intended for good quality but general compatibility with media players and non-linear editors, which gives these x264 options:

--pass 2 --bitrate 1000 --stats ".stats" --ref 5 --mixed-refs
--bframes 3 --b-rdo --bime --weightb --direct auto --subme 6
--trellis 1 --partitions p8x8,b8x8,i4x4 --me umh --threads auto --thread-input
--progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output "output" "input"

Despite fixing the crashing, I still have only audio showing in Vegas if the file is muxed in MeGUI. Will examine the AVInaptic comparison as advised.

@nhope

In GSpot the original file gives a size of 720 x 540. The remuxed version gives 720 x 544, and so does VLC. :confused:
This needs some looking into. Also because I did the remux trick (with different dimensions, DV/DVD) already about 50 times without problems. Some encoders can generate a mod 16 video and later have some pixels cropped. I don't think x264 does that.

Do MP4Box or MP4Creator-QTF require/generate mod 16 video dimensions?

nhope

Will get back to the AR issue later today, jmartinr.

I've done a lot more testing and now come to these surprising conclusions re compatibility of x264 in Sony Vegas Pro:

If there is audio muxed with the video then I8x8 is compatible but b-frames cause only the audio stream to be displayed in Vegas and no video. This is true whether the file is encoded in MeGUI or with x264vfw in VirtualDub.

However the situation is different if there is no audio muxed with the video, and it differs depending on where the file is encoded:

Case 1: No audio, mp4 encoded in MeGUI:

b-frames are OK but I8x8 crashes Vegas.

Case 2: No audio, mp4 encoded in x264vfw in VirtualDub:

I8x88 is OK but b-frames cause the file not to open in Vegas. In other words effectively the opposite of case 1.

In all cases I'm using x264 core 59 r819bm. The mp4box muxing command line is the same in all cases. I've attempted to make the x264 settings as identical as possible and studied the AVInaptic reports to check but still the encoded files behave differently in Vegas depending on whether they were encoded with x264 or x264vfw.

All the encodes that work in Vegas are reportedly decoded by qt7plug.dll (Quicktime codec) whereas H264 encoded by the Sony AVC or MainConcept AAC/AVC codecs in Vegas, are decded by mcmp4plug.dll (MainConcept codec). I wonder if there is something I could write into an x264 mp4 file to make it get decoded by the MainConcept codec in Vegas instead of the Quicktime codec. Any ideas?

Another question... If I sacrifice b-frames completely ( for Vegas compatibility (with audio) would I be losing a lot of quality/compressibility?

MP4Creator-QTF somehow introduces an error with non mod 16 values. Leading GSpot and VLC to to believe it's mod 16. Media Info still shows the right values. This might well cause the black screen in VLC with Directx output. Just reproduced with an normally non-problematic video where I cropped 4 pixels off before encoding.

Since I use SD dimensions I didn't encounter it before. You on the other hand have a problem. Until now I didn't find another workaround to get the flash player full screen aspect ratio right. It amazes me that I haven't found more, cause there should be more people with this problem, now MP4 is available in flash player.

You could crop something off, or add 4 pixels to work around the MP4Creator-QTF quirk.

Ah I just read this since I pm'd you effectively saying I was giving up. Well yes, mod 16 should help x264 compressibility too. I could crop or add as you say, or just use 1024x576 (getting BIG) or 768x432 (see here for optimal frame sizes (http://www.flashsupport.com/books/fvst/files/tools/video_sizes.html)). But then I lose the "niceness" of deinterlacing to exactly half height (1080 > 540).

I have two systems on which I run MeGUI. Both are version 0.2.6.1046 updated with the latest updates. As far as I can tell, both MeGUIs are configured identically.

One system is consistently successful. The other used to work well but for the last month or two has begun to fail every time I try to encode something. It fails during x264 Pass 2. The location on the error report does not seem to be consistent from one failure to the next.

Both systems are Windows XP SP2. It seems counter-intuitive to me, but the system that's failing has a faster processor, more memory and faster disks than the system that is consistently successful.

Here's something which is quite annoying -

You know how you could open the Avisynth script creator and crop/resize the video while having the internal video player open and remaining on top so that you can see the effects of the crop/resize as you do them? Well, this doesn't work if the main MeGUI window is maximized. If the main window is maximized, the moment you touch crop/resize, the video player stops being on top and gets minimized to the task bar. This shouldn't happen, ideally.

Can this be fixed?

Hi,

I'm trying to encode a .VOB file (no accompanying .IFO files, not ripped by me) into x264. I used the guide at MeWiki and followed each step carefully. However, there are two problems:

1)When I try to encode the audio to AAC, the job listing in the que shows error in status and does not start. Encoding to mp3 however works fine.

2)After encoding (with autocrop selected to remove black bars, and no resize), the aspect ratio is distorted. I've attached a comparison of snapshots from the original .vob and the encoded x264-mp4 files, taken with VLC.

3)When I try to mux the video and the audio to Matroska with the adaptive muxer, I get the error message "Unable to determine input type. The video may well be corrupted." However, the video plays fine in VLC (except the aspect ratio issue mentioned above).

What's going wrong, and how can I fix it? I'm an absolute newbie at this business, so explanations will be very helpful. Thanks a lot for your help.

1) What is the exact error message? If you are trying to encode with nero you need to download the aac encoder from their homepage.

2) Lots of DVDs are anamorphic. Either you resize after croping to the correct aspect ratio, or you select "clever anamorphic encoding" in the avs generator. If you just want to get rid of the black bars do the latter.

3) No idea.

I have some questions:

1) What exactly does the "source is anime" function do and why isn't the need for it detected by MeGUI? I am about to try encoding my second animated movie and I don't know if I should check this function as the source is HD and looks like it has a lot of CGI (Appleseed Ex - Machina). The only cartoon I have encoded before was Akira and I left this option alone because I know that it is a full 24 fps. Was that correct of me?

2) I have some confusion about the vobsubber. If I install vobsub I can obviously use the vobsubber but if I use VSFilter I can't. Word on the street is that VSFilter is an up to date version of vobsub, so I would obviously want to use this for my playback. Do you see my dilemma? What to do? :confused:

1) Did you set up the program paths for neroaacenc.exe? options => settings => program paths => audio tab

2) You have to signal DAR in the .avs script. For example, for a 4:3 DAR

global MeGUI_darx = 4
global MeGUI_dary = 3

3) Try the MKV muxer or MP4 muxer in the tools

Hello,

I'm trying to convert my HD DVDs' (VC1) to AVC so I can stream them to my PS3. I've tried various profiles such as the PS3 one and the blue ray version and both give a flickering / blocking effect in the out of focus background. I've ramped up the bit rate ~ 22M average and VBV 38M and it still is apparent.
(projecting them on a 80" diagonal so I want to keep as much quality as possible)

I read about crf and managed to encode one film (insideman) at crf 18 which looks really good and has none of the background 'mush' by using the CQ-ASP_Q2_eq(crf) profile.

A few weeks later I've tried to use crf again and everytime the encodes just starts to 'breakaway' and after about 15mins the predicted/end file size starts to increase massively - normally crashes or I quit it once it reaches 50+GB, has gone over 200GB. The original file is ~ 18GB.

Trying to play the aborted file shows it has a bit rate of over 200MB/s in some scenes. I tried again and restricted VBV but it didn't seem to make much difference.

I tested a small file ~ 30MB this worked OK.

I'm using the stable version which I re-downloaded and installed again yesterday with no difference.

Am I doing something wrong ?

I believe I am having this same issue -- I convert from DVD video to mp4/x264 and select "clever anamorphic" with the "overcrop" option, and my resulting video is vertically stretched like the ones this poster showed.

Manually changing the DAR sounds like it may be the way to fix it -- but how do I know what the DAR should be?

In other words, should my DAR be the AR of the original DVD video (1.82:1), the actual image portion of that video (2.35:1), my PC monitor (4:3), or my TV (16:9)? Or some other value derived from some combination of these?

My goal is to convert DVD video to x264 .mp4 files that can be viewed on a PC or streamed to my PS3. How can I do that using "clever anamorphic" mode and still keep my aspect ratio correct?

Thanks. Pleaes forgive my n00b-ness... :-)

Hi,

I have a few questions about MeGUI.

1st. How important is the MOD16 rule? I received an error that my source video was not MOD16 and that it would reduce quality. However, forcing MOD16 removes a lot of extra video space.

2nd. Why does it force me to use YV12 (4:2:0) when encoding with MeGUI? My source is YUY2 (4:2:2). Isn't that removing a lot of picture information?

Sharktooth
6th May 2008, 02:05
MOD16 is not necessary for x264 however compression will be slightly lower with non MOD16 resolutions. the message is just a warning. some avisynth filters may require MOD16 res though.
also x264 accepts only YV12 colorspace.

moving from 4:2:2 to 4:2:0 means loosing 1/6th of the color information.

Has anyone had the error of "stats file not able to be renamed" when encoding 2-pass x264 in MeGUI?

On first pass a .stats.temp file is created and when it is done, it tries to rename that to just .stats and that is where the error above occurs. The second pass, therefore, doesn't start automatically. I can delete the first pass job out of the queue and rename the .stats.temp file myself, then start the second pass job manually, but that's kinda annoying. Is it some kind of permissions thing that I'm not allowing MeGUI to have in renaming temp files in Windows or something?

I am using the latest version of MeGUI (as of 4/28/08) and techouse's r839 build of x264.

I have a weird issue with megui and staxrip on my main computer (Vista 64bit), in that whilst playing about in the UI, it will lock up and i have to terminate it via taskmanager or click to bring up the application hang dialog.

On megui the problem is harder to replicate as it seems random, for instance i can click "AVS script generator" play around with 1 video save the settings and then click another, and it will freeze up, its random to a degree but it always freezes at the point where im clicking something in the UI, mostly an option like save/open that will popup the file open dialog. It happens with all the versions i have so far including 0.2.6.1046

On staxrip its a little easier for it to happen as i setup my first encode and thats perfect, then when i click "add" button on the "source files" dialog for the second, it will almost definetely 99% freeze.

Its definetely not staxrip/megui as i have the exact same versions on my MediaCenter encoding and there absolutely fine.
I work around the problem, by setting up a job, then closing the app, reopening the app and adding the next job and so on and so on.
Its definetely not the machine's stability (its not OC'd either) as i use the method above and then can set of encoding for days at a time and it never freezes or gives a bad encode. Like i said its a problem on my computer, that gets triggered whilst playing with the UI.

Anyways, just wondered if anybody else had the issue and knew the solution as its driving me nuts.

megui freezes for me too during that point, and also when loading avs scripts, queuing it, and loading another. i pinned it down to me closing the preview window, so if i kept on doing that, then 3-4 scripts down the line, it would lock entirely.

i mean just opening AVS scripts to queue up, or saving newly created ones. closing that window *always* leads to a lock in megui for me. this is on 2 PC's running vistax64

*bump*

Was this the wrong thread to post a bug? No one seems to have noticed this.

Also, found another thing - some tooltips under the Advanced tab of the x264 Video configuration dialog shows Error: No data available.

Why does MeGUI report FPS as the last "processing rate" value shown in the status window just before encoding finishes and the window closes? Is that a bug; shouldn't it calculate the total frames / time taken? This is particularly annoying when priority is set to high. :angry:

Another question, is it normal for MeGUI to increase memory usage when a filter (like MC_Spuds) is used in the script when the script is enqueued but before the jobs are run? The memory increases as the number of jobs enqueued increases and can eventually use over 500GB of RAM just by adding jobs. :eek:

@vtn54 : yes, a known bug unfortunately.

@saint-francis : VSFilter has nothing to do with the vobsubber in MeGUI. It's just an avisynth filter...

@Avenger007 : about memory increase...I think it's due to the decoding filters chain used by the avisynth filters but I might be wrong here coz I haven't seen this here.

Which is an avisynth filter? Should I put vobsub.dll in the aisynth plugin folder? There is no way to set the program path to it. All I know is that if I don't have vobsub installed the vobsubber doesn't work. But I gather that there will be a conflict between VSFilter and vobsub if I have them both installed.

3) No idea.

Okay, selecting anamorphic encoding when autocropping significantly lessened the problem, but did not remove it. There is still a slight horizontal stretching, as you can see in the following snapshots (taken with VLC). Is this some unavoidable artifact of the encoder? (mod16 resizing perhaps?) Thanks.

VSFilter.dll is just an avisynth filter whereas vobsub.dll is more than that.

btw, which VSFilter version do you use ? I would like to reproduce the behaviour.

I'm using cccp. It uses VSFilter for subtitle playback. I'm not sure what version it is because as far as I can gather it's a patched version of 2.37. Not the clsid 2.38.

Kurtnoise

Well...upload your VSFilter.dll somewhere. I don't want to install this pack.

btw, I tested VSFilter.dll 2.38 from guliverkli2 project and vobsub.dll from the VobSub package available in D9 dl section and I've got no problem. No conflicts each others...

The vobsubber in MeGUI uses and calls *only* vobsub.dll.

Here (http://www.mediafire.com/?typdflrxlge)it is.
I am assuming that since VSFilter is used for playback that it will conflict with vobsub. I haven't tested this. Are people generally installing the vobsub package and using that for playback and the vobsubber in MeGUI? Maybe I should just can CCCP and use vobsub for playback.

The video preview issue is fixed, thanks.

But, there are other issues/gripes now:

The tooltip text I've given for Adaptive DCT is not what I see there now. The text for I8X8 has been moved to Adaptive DCT, and the I8X8 tooltip left empty.

I had made a typo in the tooltip text I had given for P4X4 - it's predicted and not predicated. I had edited my post and fixed it, but I guess you copied over the text before I could get to it. Could you please fix? Sorry about the typo.

Is the (!) needed on the top-left for every tooltip? It just bloats up the tooltip text area.

The windows seem to have become too bright now:

I'm afraid I spoke too soon about the video preview being fixed. Yes, that specific issue I had earlier was fixed by setting the video preview window to remain always on top, but now err...it's always on top. If I attempt to minimize the other MeGUI windows and browse the Internet, the video preview window doesn't get minimized and remains on top of my browser. Only way is to close the preview and then reopen when needed. i.e. it's a different kind of annoyance now.

Can the preview window be auto-minimized too if all other open windows are manually minimized? Either that or provide a minimize button for the preview window. Thanks.

Is it possible to get a debug version of megui? I get a lot of problems with the UI freezing up on my machine (the encoding is always fine), ive already bought it up in this forum, but im guessing most people dont have the issue, so i would love to be able to somehow find what it is and fix it.

Its almost always (maybe always) caused when i click SAVE AVS or open a video/audio file, so im guessing its something to do with the FileOpen prompts.

stax76
17th May 2008, 10:12
Debug version don't help I think, the .NET runtime should show a dialog with the exception if the application don't handle the exception. On freeze it's more difficult, I would guess some unmanaged library causing the freeze, maybe some AviSynth plugin. You would first have to find out how to reproduce it because you write 'maybe always', that implies it's arbitrary and that makes things a lot more difficult.

Megui and Staxrip both give me the same issue, so it could be related to AVIsynth or something they both use as its the only 2 apps i have freezes on.

In staxrip, i can load vob files in, click a profile and add a single movie to the jobs list ready for encode (i can preview/crop etc etc). When i click on add for the second movie, it will always freeze at the "Source Files" window when i click the ADD button. To get around this, i setup 1 job, then close staxrip and then reopen staxrip and add another job.

In megui, the problem is more frequent, for instance i can click AVS script creator and import a video, i can use the resize button, and if i click save, then it works. If i click the "preview AVS script" button after making changes, then when i click the SAVE button, it normally freezes. From the main menu in Megui if i click the Input AVS script button after using AVS script generator then it will freeze.

It at first appeared to be related to clicking the fileopen/filesave boxes as these are points at which it freezes on me, like i said encoding never fails and never freezes. This is with Vista64, the exact same input files have been used on my Vista32 machine and they run with no lockups.

When Megui freezes the window comes up not responding and i get the option to check for a solution/close/wait, i get the following information

Trying to solve the problem i downloaded the source-code for Megui, even though i dont know what im doing, i did manage to get 2.6.1046 running of Megui and trying to trace the same steps i used above to make it crash would give me the following error on my compiled version.

"MeGUI encountered a fatal error and may not be able to proceed

Reason : Unable to load DLL 'AvisynthWrapper' : The specified module could not be found (Exception from HRESULT 0x8007007E) source exception : MeGUI stacktrace: at

MeGUI.AviSynthClip.dimzon_avs_destroy(IntPtr& avs)
at MeGUI.AviSynthClip.cleanup(Boolean disposing)"

So perhaps the culprit is AVIsynth somehow? I have reinstalled it several times, even going through the registry and folders to make sure its gone, but its one of the things that is common to both programs.

EDIT - It also happens on the latest build of Staxrip, i went back to using the older one because i didnt think it had a problem (as thats whats running on my 32Bit Vista).

stax76
17th May 2008, 11:55
If the encoding works then it it's probably not plugin related, you still could try to sweep the entire AviSynth plugin dir and just download the plugins StaxRip is asking for. If that don't work please make a bug report as described on the support (http://www.planetdvb.net/staxrip/support)page, if it works please put back the old plugins one by one to find out which one causes the freeze. I can add a warning for this plugin then (there are already warnings for several plugins). At which point crashes StaxRip? If it's the file browsers, than it's probably a windows or .NET bug. The code executed when you click the 'Add' button but is:

Using d As New OpenFileDialog
d.Multiselect = True
d.Filter = g.GetFileDialogFilter("Video Files", s.VideoFileTypes)
d.InitialDirectory = s.LastSourceDir

If d.ShowDialog() = DialogResult.OK Then
lb.Items.AddRange(d.FileNames.Sort.ToArray)
UpdateControls()
End If
End Using

I can actually see a bug there, setting 'InitialDirectory' with a non existing directory is known to be not tolarated by .NET or the OS or by some version of it. I had a bug report for that before and it seems I missed to search the entire code for that issue or reintroduced one. Quite possible this causes file open and file save dialogs to crash in both, staxrip and megui. I've uploaded a new beta fixing this so you might try if that was the problem.

Thanx, i tried the new beta and unfortunately its even worse for me. I can start the process of adding an encode, by selecting the VOB files, then clicking through the preview/crop/etc dialogs. When i get to the prompt "Click on the Next Button to add a job", i click the next button and the Jobs window appears, but all the dialogs/buttons inside are blank and the app has frozen. This happens everysingle time, so using this version for me there is absolutely no way to add a job :(.

Somebody else in here posted that they were running 64bit and got exactly the same issues, so it could be related to the build, or could just be a bizarre issue thats got both of us :(.

On Vista it might not be much different to XP, you might have to run it as admin because on Vista by default applications run with limited privilegs and MeGUI might have problems with that. You simply right-click the executable and select Run As Administrator. As noob it's a good idea to read some tutorials, google for megui tutorial or megui guide.

I tried a six channel multi-channel WAV, but it keeps returning an error with nothing in the log for a reason.

Here is the raw multi-channel if anyone wants to try. (http://www.temp.seraphicgate.com/testwav.rar)

please, cut your wav file...only ~10Mb is sufficient.

why would you like to do that ?

why would you like to do that ?

Encode source material without having to crop. For example, FRAPS'ed video at 1920x1080. x264 handles this fine, I don't see the purpose of preventing it in MeGUI.

If you have some time, could you put here some tooltips for the xvid compressor settings ? I would like to update this. :)You should be able to purloin the text for most of them from Crusty's FAQ (http://www.geocities.com/atreya2011/Xvid-FAQ-Crusty-04-03-2004.pdf). ;) Some things have changed of course, that I can help update if you can give me an initial draft.

Also any answer to these questions/suggestions?

Is the (!) and the text toolTip at the top needed for every tooltip?
well...either we keep this way or we remove everything. We cannot choose the title and icon for a particular tooltip.
I propose we remove everything. We don't need titles for the tooltips, and you don't need to specify that they are tooltips either. It's self-explanatory what they are.
Any reason why zones were removed from both Xvid and x264 configuration dialogs?
Why is the maximum number of B-frames for Xvid restricted to 4, in the Xvid configuration dialog?

Okay, selecting anamorphic encoding when autocropping significantly lessened the problem, but did not remove it. There is still a slight horizontal stretching, as you can see in the following snapshots (taken with VLC). Is this some unavoidable artifact of the encoder? (mod16 resizing perhaps?) Thanks.

Sorry if already reported, I am in a little hurry...

Bug in MeGUI 0.3.0.1004: If you select the video encoding mode "Const. Quantizer", on a german Windows XP (using the comma as LOCALE dependent decimal separator) you get the x264 command line option "--qp ##,0", where the ",0" may be a fractional part, although a quantizer would usually be integer. And the spin control contains only an integer. This command line option confuses x264: "invalid argument: qp = ##,0"

In "Const. Quality" mode instead, the spin control shows a fractional number and spins in tenths, displaying a comma as (LOCALE dependent) decimal separator in the spin edit and the command line option "--crf ##.#" with decimal dot (the usual english number notation, as expected) - so this mode works well.

A few small questions.

1. Is MeGUI compatible with Avisynth 2.5.8 RC1?
2. In the audio encoding options in MeGUI, I use Nero Digital AAC. SO, I use one of the NDAAC profiles. In the config of any of those profiles, there's 3 options to upmix 2 channel to 5.1 using various methods. None of them work for me. I queue it, start it, and then it immediately stops and says "error". In the log, it doesn't tell me what the error is. So I suppose my question is, why doesn't the 2 channel to 5.1 options work?

I can't remove this warning because it's also used for the other encoders (xvid, snow...).

To clarify, I open an AVS file on the main menu, not the m2ts file.

Not for me, I get the following error. However, I found a work-around (set a mod16 resolution in the .avs-file, enqueue, then change back to the native resolution before starting the queue) so it's not a big deal.

I don't have the original .avs-file with 1920x1080 source resolution but this reproduces the "Job creation aborted due to invalid AviSynth script" error message:
AviSource("test.avi", audio=true)
\.Spline64Resize(1920, 1080)
\.ConvertToYV12()

This works fine:
AviSource("test.avi", audio=true)
\.Spline64Resize(1920, 1088)
\.ConvertToYV12()

Enqueueing using 1088, changing back to 1080, then starting the encode gives the correct result with proper crop flags set. I also tried to update AviSynth to 2.5.8 RC1 which made no difference.

this is a strange one, when i play a dvd - it plays as 16:9, when dgindex looks at it it says 16:9, yet when i load the d2v into megui it says its 4:3, i have looked in the ifo and even that says 16:9, so do i leave the dar as what megui says or can i change it ? and the dgindex that comes with megui is misbehaving sometimes, it will make the d2v but then megui will fail to determine the source of the video, dgindex final gives no such problems, so poss it should go into the update for megui next time round ? :p

Having a huge problem using megui in vista ultimate x64

Lame mp3 when starting to pass mp3 is incredibly slow (note this is not because of my system, amd 6000+ and 3g of ram lol)

Megui is set to run processes in normal priority. but anything it starts is always set to the lowest priority, even when changing it in task manager the passing process is still incredibly slow

Anyone got a fix?

@Codex0nz : LAME encoder is known to be slow...whatever the priorities you choose. So, it doesn't concern MeGUI.

@Carpo : update to the latest version needs to change also some parts in the code. Yes, it's planned but I've no timeline to give you.

@loom91 : yes, I think it's due to avoid such problems but you can crop manually.
