a few weeks back i posted a question about RB and its ability to handle new ARccoSS and RipGard files. i'm talking about files that have already been ripped to the hard drive with decrypter or Fabdecrypter. i noticed that some softwares, like shrink and recode2 weren't able to handle those files(error opening the files). at the time,i had not tried that type of files with RB so i was trying to find out if RB would handle them or if it would choke like shrink and recode2 did. well last night(1/15/06)i tried to backup "The Cave". (this is one of those movies that it is giving people problems)with RB and what do you know, RB gave me some sort of error, telling me that it couldn't tell the difference between ripping or burning in one of the files. i took that same movie files and run it thru VobBlanker, i did nothing else but run it and tried RB again and it work just fine. i think jddobs should look into this or i suggest that before using RB on new encryptions, one should run the files thru VobBlanker first.
with my system, it takes RB from 4to5 hours to encode a movie so, to get an error popup after three hours of encoding is really disapointing.
thanks.

I wouldn't suggest that at all... no other software should be needed beyond ripping and DVD-RB. I've yet to find a single title that, when successfully ripped, ran into problems. Are you sure it was a good rip?
I'll pick up "The Cave" today and see if anything unusual happens.

hi jdobbs. thanks for the reply. i was just suggesting that because RB choke in the first tried but, as soon as i run the same files thru VobBlanker, RB did the job without a problem.
i'll wait for your resolts with the cave.

qiote" Are you sure it was a good rip?
yes, i transcoded those files with clonedvd2 and with dvd2one v2, everything went fine.

how come the same files(ripped with Decrypter) worked fine with clonedvd2, dvd2one V2 and with RB after VobBlanker but they would not work with RB alone?

There are about 8,000 answers to that question. Because neither of those packages have to understand the stream they are working... they just change some values/flags and rewrite it. They don't even have to decode it. That's why they work so fast and also why they look so blocky when you play them.
You might as well be asking me how many pancakes it takes to cover a dog house.... there is little relationship so there is no obvious answer.
Give me time to have a cup of coffee first, and I'll run that disc.
By the way, NTSC?

i'm not trying to rush you, as i said, i did it with RB after vobblanker and it look great. i'm goint to try another one of those difficult movies "Madagascar" to see how it goes.
thanks for your help jdobbs.

I think I did Madagascar by ripping with DVD Fab... I'm pretty sure Decrypter won't work without help from AnyDVD.

It depends if the disc is NTSC or PAL. With the last one there were no problems at all.
By the way the question about NTSC is still to be answered. ;)

dvddecrypter can probably rip it the help of the plugin.:)

I was unable to use DVD-RB on Madagascar. I do have AnyDVD also. I don't recall the error or problem I ran into but DVD-RB failed somewhere in the encoding process. I gave up and just copied it to a dual-layer blank... :)
There was a 2nd movie that I had to use "FixVTS" on in order to get DVD-RB to process it also. That all said, I don't want to see DVD-RB getting into "breaking" these protection schemes and I'm sure jdobbs has no desire either, not to mention the legal ramifications. Now, if DVD-RB had an option to ignore bogus data that's being inserted into DVD's structures, that might be nice...

Do you have "ignore read errors" set on Decrypter? That can mask problems.
I also said "I think I did Madagascar by using DVD Fab." -- I run 2-4 movies as tests each night, and I can't really keep up with it. I definitely backed it up with DVD-RB, though -- and watched it (it's pretty good :)).

I was only using Madagascar as an example of the few I've been unable to use DVD-RB. I wish I could remember the other but generally I don't dwell on this stuff and whatever other method or workaround I did, it "worked", more or less, so I've moved on.
As for DVD Decrypter, "Ignore read errors" is NOT checked.

Succesfully ripped and re-encoded Madagascar with RB-Pro one week ago.
To rip it I used PGCEdit with PSL2 Plugin in association with DVDDecrypter 3.5.4.0 !!!

I used DVD-RB with Madagascar NTSC region 1. I have AnyDVD running in the backgroung and don't even bother to rip the disc to my hard drive. I just point DVD-RB to the DVD and let it go. It worked fine with Madagascar, Brothers Grimm, and some others with ripguard/arccos.
Thank you jdobbs for such a great program!

DVD Fab will take care of the ripping and DVD-RB handles ArcOSS titles just fine without any cleaning or other processing. Whenever I come across a new Sony title I inherently use DVD Fab, but other than that it's DVD Decrypter.

Ok... I didn't finally pick up "The Cave" until later in the day and its ripping now. I'll let you know what I find. I don't think I understand what you mean by "couldn't tell the difference between ripping and burning in one of the files" -- but I'll run it as one of my batch jobs tonight and let you know how it comes out tomorrow morning.

Ok. I backed up "The Cave", NTSC, R1 -- no problems.
1. I ripped with DVD Fab v2.9.6.8.
2. Ran DVD-RB v1.06.
I just ran through the backup and could find no problems with playback.

thanks jdobbs, i think that my problem was that i ripped "The Cave" with Decrypter which is not really handling new encryptions all that well. thanks again Sir.

I tested ripping it with (plain vanilla, no plugins) Decrypter. I received a read error. It works, however, with DVD Decrypter combined with AnyDVD.
