View Full Version : Modes to convert LB 4:3 to 16:9

I have a Non-Anamorphic WS DVD-5, hoping to use AVS option "Convert from LB 4:3 to 16:9" to convert to Anamorphic WS.
Since it's already DVD-5, I tried mode of "No compression (100% video)", but it doesn't do the conversion, guess AVS wasn't used.
Then I used CCE and preview m2v file, it seems the conversion is done, but I don't want to run CCE for hours, is there any better mode to just do the conversion in quick way without lossing image quality?:helpful:
Thanks in advance:thanks:

best Mode to convert LB 4:3 to 16:9 Please read and follow the forum rules, specifically, rule 12: do not ask what's best. Thank you.

...is there any better mode to just do the conversion in quick way without lossing image quality...The conversion CAN'T be quick, though, wlee. First the image is cropped, and then it is resized (blown-up) to create the anamorphic image. Non-trivial to do, this takes time.

You can't do "No compression" when you want to change the aspect ratio. That requires reencoding.

Here's what I've found:
1. For most discs you should not use the ITU option. I've tested many (with a ruler).
2. For the few that do, there is a slight horizontal stretch when you resize. On those, clicking this option will correct it.
3. Even for those -- you have to really be looking for it to notice. But this option was added for those who want to make it perfect.
There's no automated way I can find to tell one way or the other...

Hi I am trying to do exactly the same conversion as mentioned in the first post but when I click 'Prepare' in DVD-RB Pro v.1.09.3 I get the following status log
Phase I, PREPARATION started.
- "Movie Only" mode is enabled.
- VTS_01: 252,768 sectors.
-- Scanning and writing .D2V & .AVS files
-- Video demultiplexing...
-- Processed 14,272 frames.
-- Building .AVS and .ECL files
- Detected no frames and/or video to encode. Aborting.
Can anyone help? I tried both 'No compression' mode and CCE mode but same output each time and the rebuild button is greyed out.
any help/advice is appreciated.

It sounds like you have no video in your source directory. VTS_01_X.VOB is only a little over 512MB --> which is exceptionally small. How did you rip your source?

hi jdobbs,
thanks for the quick reply. The file size is accurate. It's my own student film ( 8mins NTSC video)

Is it a valid DVD structure? Something is off. Send me the REBUILDER.INF file so I can look at it (dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com).

That's the REBUILDER.INI file. The one I'm interested in is REBUILDER.INF and it is located in the working folder. It will be too large to post, so I'd recommend mailing it.

hi jdobbs,
thank you for your quick replies. really appreciate it. Is the rebuilder.inf file hidden in some folder? I have 'Show Hidden Files' & 'Show system files' checked in folder options and I did a full search in my computer for rebuilder.inf and it returned nothing, which is why I thought you must have meant the .ini file.
Surprisingly when I installed the free version of DVD-RB 0.97, it worked but when I tried to check the video the audio seemed fine but the video was completely grayed out (no video)
Also, despite choosing 4:3 LB > 16:9 the greyed out video was in AR 4:3.
I'd done that test with 'no compression'. Right now I'm testing it out with CCE and will post my results.
thanks so much again for all your help. Hope we can figure this one out.
Edit01:
Ahh, I see it now. For some reason in the Pro version it never even created the D2AVS and the DVDFILES folder in the working folder which is why the rebuilder.inf file never showed up in the search. Will post as soon as the encoding test is completed.
Edit02:
For some reason I seem to have a very small .INF file unlike the large .inf file you had mentioned. It's just at 1K. here it is.
Results with CCE encoding gave a Grayed out box with no video image at AR 16:9 with clear audio.

You can't change aspect ratio with "no compression" -- in order to change the size of the video you have to recompress it.
I think you have a problem in your source. Try opening the AVS file with Windows Media Player -- my guess is that it will be blank there too. What you are seeing when you do that is the original picture stream.

HURRAH!!! I got it to work.
There wasn't any problem with the source at all. I've tested it on several DVD players and on the computer. Even played the source file first to make sure everything was good.
Here's how the test went:
- I realized that cropping would require encoding because even though I got grey in all 3 tests (no compression/CCE/HC) only the no compression mode gave the same 4:3 AR
-- At first with the default options I tried encoding with the HC encoder after a failed attempt with the CCE encoder. Again same result > 16:9 AR but grey image. Working audio
-- So I tried it again with the CCE encoder but this time unchecked 'Convert to YUV2() under Options>AVS Options
Voila !!! My 2.35:1 AR film correctly displayed with smaller black bars at 16:9 Aspect Ratio.
Sound and Image perfect. No noticeable loss at all to the video (i'm assuming since it's a 500 MB file and since it's width remains constant at 720 pixels - no scaling has occured.)
Thank you so much for this fantastic piece of software. I was all worried that I'd had to dig and search for each and every source file and redo the entire export from Priemiere. Also thank you for your quick responses and checking back in on a regular basis. really appreciate that. Thanks jdobbs!:thanks: Phew this takes a big load of my mind.

I really doubt that's the reason, because there's an internal check if CCE is used and ConvertToYUY2() will be written anyway whether it's checked or not.
Open one of your avs files with an editor in your working D2VAVS folder and take a look. ;)

Exactly true. ConvertToYUY2() is used whether you like it or not with CCE -- it's required.

I'm a newbie at this so I might say silly things. :p But I can't think of any other reason why it worked then. This was the only single change I made while re-testing the conversion.
Here's the rebuilder.inf file again from the last time when it worked perfectly. Would like to know what exactly went right so the mistake doesn't happen again and I can figure the fix myself on the next run rather than be happy with a happy accident. Thanks again for all your help rippraff and jdobbs!!
