If I use dvd-rb to backup an entire dvd, menus and extras, vs dvd shrink, will the quality of the reencode always look better than dvdshrink?

From my understanding, the compression ratio in dvdshrink doesn't matter if the avg bitrate is still high.

Say I use dvdshrink to backup an entire movie with a bitrate of 5000 using 90% compression... Will I notice a difference if I use dvd-rebuilder? I'm viewing my dvds on a 50" tv.

Thanks for any help

Correct. Some DVD's still have high bitrate after compressing as much as 50%. My R2 version is still well over 4mbps after doing it at 55%. Some will look rubbish as the average bitrate is lower and can look worse at just 20% compression (80% in Shrink).

You will see no difference or very minimal. Shrink can compete against DVD-RB well and there will be minimal difference from 70% and up. Where DVD-RB will win most of the time is around 60% and below.

However, you TV is big and it depends if you want to spend many hours re-encoding for the percentage used. I would re-encode at 75% and lower.
