Hi all

this is my first time at capturing I was reading the fantastic guide at doom9, I and come at the point of setting up virtualdub to acquire the video.

at this point (6.2.1 General Settings)
the guide says:

Audio -> Compression -> in the dropdown box labeled 'name' you should choose CD-quality.
Note: If you got problems with hiss in audio or if you want to capture old Mono VHS tape you can try other Audio formats, e.g. 44.1 kHz 16 bit Mono or even 32 kHz 16 bit Mono, but please don't use any audio compressor on the fly to avoid problems.

so I just go in the audio > compression..... no drop down box appears but an error windows tha says:

Link2
Trial period has expired
Go to http........... to get a registration key

What is this? I didnt even know I had this thing and I am not sure what it is its purpose?
if I click OK it then redirect me to a "donation" page of "videotools.net" http://www.videotools.net/index.php?lang=uk&rub=pub&htm=donation.htm&app=_pvsp

after that it show a list of possible encoders, adn I dont really know which one to choose

No compression
Acelp
CCIT
DIVX
DSP Group
FFDSHOW
GSM
IAC2
IMA ADPCM
LEARNOUT & HAUSPIE
MICROSOFT ADPCM

Best to not compress audio during capture. It takes CPU time which may cause frame drop and it certainly won't return as good a result as taking your time to compress the audio later. If you plan on making a DVD, just set the audio to 48k 16 bit stereo in the virtualdub audio setup.

I was just following the guide, anyway you advice make sence and I'll not compress the audio.

I've sorted out that this Link2 things is related to a very old installation of DVD2SVCD, the incriminated files is READAVS.DLL, for what I know its purpose is to make avs files readable with TMPENG. I dont feel to use tmpeng, so I was just wondering If I could unregister this dll to take read of this annoiance, it appers with any capturing software when I go to the audio setting.....

Hi All I need a bit of advice here, I am using VirtualDub 1.6.11. there two things in the guie that I cannot find in virtual dub

6.2.3 Saving your settings

If you are done with your settings, it is time to save them to a
void having to go through the whole process every time:
Capture -> Preferences

in virtual dub this option is grayed out and not selectable.

while in

6.2.5 The capturing process

You now have two possibilities to start the capture,
either manual or using the timer:

......

Using the timer:

......

Capture -> Capture Timer
In the window that appears now, just set start time,
length and file name, check the box below video and
hit 'save timer'. Then you'll just have to hit 'start timer'
and off you go! VirtualDub will start the work at the
appropriate time.

.....

After the movie/clip has ended, hit the escape key
(not necessary when using the timer, of course) so
the capture is stopped.
Then you should exit the capture mode
File -> Exit Capture Mode.

I cannot find the timer option ?!?!?.

:helpful: :thanks:

Many thanks to anyone replier :)

TJeR:

I've merged your second thread into this one; it's really the same issue -- the Analog Capture Guide could use some review.

This particular guide was crafted by a small team, lead by Wilbert. I'll PM him and ask him to examine your issues.

You shouldn't get this, i guess something is messed up in your registry. Link2 is an avi-wrapper. Try to uninstall it, if that's not possible anymore try to remove all registry entries with link2 in it.

No compression
(...)

Like DrP said choose "No compression". In older versions and in VDubMod this is called PCM.

Probably a bug in VDub. I will ask Avery about it.

This is probably a mistake in the guide. For the timer, you need Dittrich's modification of VDub (i think). I will correct this, thx!

Uninstalled it, I dont get the error anymore, no matter what capturing software I use, it is still obscure, why it got invoked during audio setting...

That is exactly how I'll do it, thanks.

Probably a bug in VDub. I will ask Avery about it.

A bug or not, after uninstalling the link2 thing my settings are "saved", the prefrences are still grayed out, but at least when I switch to capture mode everything is already setted up, I noticed a new registry key under HKCU\freeware\virtualdub\ has appeared (the link2 thing was interfering with that in some way): Capture. I see all my setting are stored there.

If that VirtualDubMod ? or VirtualDub-Sync? If so I have a question about them. whit this two application, when I switch to capture mode, they both try to link to "Microsoft WDM image capture (Win32)(VFW)" returninga "401" status, VirtualDubMod then become inactive and the whole system crash after some few minute with a "page error fault". Both them should connect to "Cinergy 250 BDA Analog capture (Direct Show)" instead, like VirtualDub does. I dont know how to change this behaviour. VirtualDub works perfect (from an ignorant point of view thoug) with the Cinergy driver, I already succedd to capture about 20mins of video (for testing purpose) with no drop frames and audio in sync. If I could use the timer features in VirtualDubMod it would be wonderfull and I could keep readin the rest of this fantastic guide :)

Thanks for the quink an precise answer Wilbert. and thanks again to the existance of this forum :)
