View Full Version : Input settings & Encoders

I'm still trying to figure out why I can successfully back up an interleaved DVD with 1.05.2 using HC 16 but not with CCE basic - possible dropped frames.
The fact that the DVD is episodic possibly makes matters worse ?
looking at the input settings If I opt for CCE basic I get Video Title set 01
subtiles English and then a large number of unreferenced subpictures ( all enabled). Switching to HC and all of these subpictures are crossed out as they are supposed to be. Switching back to CCE basic and they remain crossed out.
In both cases the other Video Tile sets only have English listed.
Somehow HC seems to be able to handle all of this without any problem but CCE basic can not.

As I wrote on the other thread...
Is your PC overclocked?
If yes then that's the reason why CCE has droped frames.

No overclocking. Having googled I have seen this point made several times. whilst CCE may not overclocking I think there is more to it than that. If HC and/or other encoders can do the job then why can't CCE ? If the problem is not with CCE per se then is it the way DVD Pro implements CCE ?

My problem with DVD Rebuilder 1.05.2 and CCE Basic. Although I can't be sure I don't think it had anything to do with interleaved or episodes. It certainly had nothing to do with overclocking as I have never overclocked anything.
while I still had the "possible dropped frames" problem I noticed that during the encoding phase the blue bar would go about half way and then just jump to the end.
So I reformatted and installed Xp and just the necesary programs to get DVD Pro Rebuilder to work ..... and now there is no problem.
when I upgraded to 1.05.2 I remember that I was tempted to try Avisynth_256.
Perhaps that was the problem ?
So although I have no idea what caused the "possible dropped frames" I am convinced that it was a software issue rather than hardware perhaps explaining why some have had this and others not. It would possibley have gone away at the next upgrade ?

Unreferenced subs and audio don't exist. So selecting them for removal or for keeping has no effect whatsoever. You can't keep what isn't there. The only reason they are shown on the screen is so you know they are listed, but are not referenced.

Sorry I don't understand. Whenever I got messages saying "possible dropped frames" I also got a movie which was only 3.5 gig or so in size. I thought/assumed that this was because CCE basic was mving too fast and just missing frames ? You seem to be saying that the message " possible dropped frame" refers to unreferenced subs and audios - which don't exist - and that it is really not a problem. If that is the case then my question ought to be why did the backups end up so small ?

No. I'm answering the other part of your initial statement. The two aren't related. The reason your movie was small was because of the dropped frames. The probable cause of it was some setting that was set and forgotten or some change (maybe AVISYNTH 2.5.6??? -- I hope not).
When you say you "reformatted" -- do you mean you reformatted your hard drive and reinstalled the O/S?

Yes - I reformatted C: and Installed WindowsXPSP2 updates etc then made a system Image with Acronis. So in future when things go wrong I will only need to restore the system and add the latest Rebuilder, avisynth and so on.
I like your idea about a reset to default button and agree completely that the cause was probably some setting.
By the way - Is 1.05.02 meant to be much faster with CCE ? my last disk took 97 mins to encode + 21 to Rebuild which is faster than before. Speed figs between 2.45 and 2.65

I've been doing small optimizations in the last couple of versions... but they would normally only show in PREPARE and REBUILD. I did make some changes so DVD-RB uses a little less memory a couple of versions ago... that might increase CCE speed on some systems.
It's probably the reformat, though. When you start with a clean slate there's no fragmentation at all. I have a drive set aside (actually a partition) that only holds video data... and I can see a noticable speed difference when it gets defragged.
