Maybe this fits somewhere, but I'm not quite sure.

What's the difference bet. the two? I noticed when my wmp10 didn't want to play a .divx file, and I changed it to .avi, it worked just fine. I've heard .avis called containers - does that mean they can contain .xvid or .divx or whatever?

Is is all mpeg4?

Also, does the .avi I get from my dv camera have anything to do with the .avi releated to divx?

A little concused:-)

to be short, .divx is a modified .avi container.

Not that I understand, but why the modification?

The primary attraction is the addition of menus, pictures and subtitle streams as well as (I believe) their own method of muxing 6-channel AC3/AAC. It's designed to be 100% compatible as a fallback to normal avi however.

A .divx extension is usually used just to denote that the file was encoded with DivX. Depending on how it was encoded, it's probably still an .avi. I used to use Vidomi, which suffixes all encodes with .divx, but GSpot reads them as the same format as my Gordian Knot .avi encodes.

The .avi from your DV camera could be and probably is uncompressed AVI video, depending upon how it was imported from the camera. The "container" .avi stands for "audio video interleave," which can contain many video and audio formats.

as i see it .divx has not specific support for ac3 and aac, but of course you can store everything in it you can also store in .avi, as .divx = .avi + extensions (subs, chapters, menus)

A .divx extension is usually used just to denote that the file was encoded with DivX.not necessarily. eg you can also place xvid in a .avi, rename .avi to .divx and play it in your .divx player

after all, the main point that seperates .divx from .avi is "only" the extension
