Ridiculous oversizing?

I like to use Virtualdub to cut short scenes out of larger video files and for the most part it works great. Sometimes though I get this problem where my input file will be, say, 600MB and about an hour and when I go to cut out a 5 minuite scene the output file ends up being like 5 or 6 gigs.
Anyone know what may cause this?

You're not setting your Vdub to use "Direct Stream Copy". Instead of cutting, you're cutting AND converting to uncompressed AVI.
