DVD std alone player to read all files?

i have a movie which i can see only with the vlc player.with mediaplayer it s filled with tiny squares all over the screen!
does it work with standalone player, if i burn the file on a cd disc, can i see it on my TV?
if not, can i convert to a more standard avi file?
if yes, what software do I need?

i have downloaded the divx player, and it plays on my PC.
I think i will need a good dvd stanadlone player which play all type of file, any recommendation
