Everyone:

Someone sent me a video that is an .exe. It's a self extracting video file...which I'v never heard of. It plays, but it's fullscreen, not resizeable, and has it's own playing controls (which suck). I'm trying to find a way to extract the video to just an avi or mpeg so I can play it in my normal video player. Any ideas?

Thank you.

P.s. it's not a virus; it's from a trusted person.

Ask your trusted person how he/she created it, or if they can resend it to you as a standard video stream.

It's likely a Bink video - there's a tool called Fraps (not free but there's a limited function trial available) that can capture from pretty much any DirectX source to an uncompressed AVI. I don't believe the video can be extracted per se.

If it is a bink video file try Rad video tools from their website (http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm).
In the faq on that site it says:
How can I convert an EXE compiled Bink or Smacker file to an AVI file? Just highlight the EXE file and hit the convert button..
That involves recompression however and seems to go at a stale pace.

A bink file is probably recogniseable by its icon beinghttp://www.radgametools.com/images/binksmall.jpg. In general the icon should give something away.

i'll try those programs. Thanks. The icon isn't like the bink one... it came from a webcam, and was compressed using the webcam's software.

Should be a bink...

Probably a logitech quickcam video-email.
About which nothing much can be found online.
An option that would be intresting to try is analysing the exe file with a pe-file analyser of some sort.
But I do not have any logitech quickcam video mails at my disposal.
I seen no other options except for the directx capture with fraps or other programs CWR03 mentioned, for now.

Merry Christmas,
Greetings
