THANK YOU!
First off, a huge thanks to the developers past and present of the tool "MeGUI". This front-end tool, after working through a bit of a learning curve, has enabled me to fairly quickly and easily create some great looking encodes - better, in fact, than the encodes I was making with Nero Recode. (This may be because I am taking the time to watch settings and do things in a non-cookie cutter way...).
One of the first "shortcomings" I saw with the MeGUI program was that it's one-click mode did not allow the user to encode to a bitrate - it only encodes to fit a size. This forced me to actually go through all the steps - DGIndex, Avisynth, and finally encoding and muxing. But for the added time and slight trouble, I have found that my encodes look superior to their Nero bretheren. In the end, I'm glad I didn't write off the software because of a missing feature that I personally would look for.
Secondly, thank you to all the developers of the back-end tools - the actual encoders, transcoders, and muxers without which tools like MeGUI wouldn't exist. The continuing development of these items have allowed an open source suite of tools to match, and perhaps even eclipse payware - not unheard of in these days, but certainly worthy of praise! Again, your ongoing efforts to improve the core components is greatly appreciated.
Finally - thanks to the helpful folks here on Doom9, and other computer A/V sites across the Internet. Without the resources here and the knowledge safeguarded in the forums, new users would have a *MUCH* harder time cracking into the world of encoding. While it is still not a truly user-friendly experience, your collective help has certainly made it do'able and learnable. It is still a daunting world, this encoder land. But your collective help and work have made it all the more managable.
Thanks!
