View Full Version : Extracting 6.1 AC3 audio from AVi-File

Hi all!
I'm trying to convert an AVI to DVD using TMPGenc. The Avi source has 6.1 AC3-audio (GSpot says 448 kb/s (6 ch) CBR ), so I used Nandub to convert it to wave.
Problem is that TMPGenc can't handle 6.1 wave files. After some research I discovered BeSliced to change the header to AC3, but that doesn't work: dragging the .WAV in BeSliced doesn't popup the "Fix" menu but only the conversion menu. When I choose "ac3", nothing happens but an empty log.
I need a trick to convert this 6.1 wave file to a file that TMPGenc can use. Any suggestions?
Thankx a lot!

Hi!
If you're certain that it's .AC3 and not DTS, try the following:
In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to one greater than the highest priority of listed items. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

The audio is detected in TMPGenc when I open the AVI now, so that works. But the resulting mp2 file is 100% silence! :( What did go wrong?
I guess you know a lot about TMPGenc so I have another question for you: is it posible to "crop" (I mean cut off a part left and right) a widescreen movie to 16:9 format when converting to MPEG?

You probably didn't set TMPGEnc to save as a multiplexed file. Therefore, you now should have the (silent) .MP2 video file and a separate .WAV file...

I've marked the checkbox 'Output audio and video as individual elementary streams', because DVDlab Pro needs separate video and audio input files. I guess, because this is only the 2nd time that I'm converting AVI to DVD...

Then you should now have both the video and audio streams that you say are required for DVDLabPro...

You have to load BOTH the silent video stream and audio stream into DVDLabPro...

If you want to extract 6Ch AC3 streams from out of the .AVI container, use either AVI-Mux GUI or VirtualDub/Mod...

Now this is working! DVDLab Pro can handle AC3 sound, so I just demuxed the AC3 with Virtual Dub Mod. Thankx m8!
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to crop a video with TMPGenc?

The Avi source has 6.1 AC3-audio (GSpot says 448 kb/s (6 ch) CBR )
Unless u have a Dolby Digital Plus audio file (wich as not reached consummer products yet), itīs impossible that the ac3 is 6.1-ch (that would mean a 7-ch AC3). I believe itīs a Doby Digital 5.1 EX audio file (matrix-encoded), with 7-ch encoded into 6-ch, wich is why GSpot says 448 kb/s (6 ch).
Also, go to Setting --> Advanced --> Clip frame. There uīll find settings for cropping the video and adjusting it to what u want in TMPGEnc.

Both GSpot & WinXP Properties say it's 6ch AC3... I just bought my DVD-writer so this is all new for me. Until now, I always worked with XViD.
Thankx for your help !

This likely means 5.1 (5 plus 1 = 6) .AC3
**EDIT** I just loaded an .AVI with 5.1 AC3 audio into GSpot and, as I speculated, it reports "448 kb/s (6 ch) CBR"...

You're right, I didn't thought of it that way.
Anyway, my DVD is perfect now: I used VirtualDub/Mod to extract the AC3 audio, TMPGenc to convert and crop te movie, and then loaded the AC3 and .mv2 files in DVDLab Pro.
Thankx a lot guyz!
