How to calculate optimal resolution

I'm have a capture source from Satelite in 720x576 resolution, and about 0:40:00 minutes. I want to compress to DivX .avi with 350MB final size.

How can I calculate the best resolution ...?

Something like Dr Divx or AutoGK will do that for you if you just choose the filesize you want.

If you are using DivX 6.1, 640x480 should be OK. Try to do 2nd pass with the slowest setting you can manage.
