View Full Version : Need some help to remove the noise from my films

I'am using 'smart smoother' for some time now... but I can't say that I'am getting the desired result, it seems to be that the more i try to remove the noise the more I get a smooth image, even if I go for something in between I can't get a satisfactory result. Don't get me wrong in some cases the filter works just fine (but not always).
Lately I started thinkin' that I'am using the wrong 'tool' (maybe this filter isn't exactly made for noise reduction, after all the name is ...'s. smoother' ;))
I only use it because i read that removes the noise... and yes it does, but this is not the only think it does and there is my problem.
Now I'll try with ' msu denoising filter ' or ' 2D cleaner '
Any ideas will be helpfull.
:thanks:

Have you tried DScaler's DeNoise-Filters?

You can use them in VDub via the ffvdub Plugin.
There are three filters (Adaptive, Temporal and Gradual)

That's all you need:
DScaler Download 4.11 [Download] (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/deinterlace/DScaler4111.exe)
ffdshow 2005-12-08 (Build by bob0r) [Download] (http://mirror01.x264.nl/x264/ffdshow-20051208-gcc4.0.2-sse-x264.nl.exe)

This mean's you got it working now?

Are the results satisfactory ?!?!?!?

I have to keep on testin' for the best config.
I can tell this much so far : it's a lot faster and the result even with the default confg. it's slight better.
I hope to find the right one (the one I need) so the 'slight' will be replaced with 'much'.

yes i know now. You can fix the title by selecting Edit on your first post and then changing the title edit box. Thank you.

If you don't mind using Avisynth, you'll find much better denoising options there. You can post a screenshot of a typical noisy frame in Avisynth Usage and you will get a lot of useful suggestions.

well... I may do that(post a screenshot) but not right now as the pc that I'm usin' for compressing/converting is not connected to the net/I only use it for works so I want it to be virusfree ( no antivirus can really save u these days ;) )... after all it's kind a cold down there right now (basement)...
Anyway the problem isn't that big I keep havin' noise over the eyes and ears when compressin' from DVD (not capturin'), and u may want to hit me when I tell u that I have this problem only when I try to feet a film over 105min with res. 576x316 or 640x296 in 700Mb (the truth is that I can fix that/smaller res. or usin' filters/ but then the sharpness is gone and I'm ready to sacrifice some sharpness, ok ,but not too much).
When I go for 2cd or when the film is smaller I haven't got any problems.
You may say now *@?%$*~* but I know that it can be done cause I've seen it, and I wonder if there is a filter I don't know about it that preserve's sharpness more than 'Smart Smoother' does...
Thx a lot for ur reply... I think I'll try what u r suggesting!
Respect.

When you use the word "Film" are you talking home movie or video tape. What works for one doesn't work for the other, Film Grain Verus Tape Analog Noise.

Have you tried "Wavelet Noise reduction" plug-in? It has many adjustments with good preview. It's fairly hard to find. I am not sure if there is any plug-in that is perfect that doesn't loose some detai,l but the results are excellent. If you can't find it, e-mail me at rfmmars@cox.net

I don't remember where or when exactly I runed on to it, but I didn't get it because if I recall corectly it could only work with 8 bit image.
Anyway I did get it soon as I read your reply and I'll give it a try after I finish with my tests via 'avisynth's denoise options'
I always wanted to see what avisynth really can do but I didn't know how to work with it - (I guess I'm just stupid ;)- Now that I've got the push I need I say I'll run a few tests.
The funny thing is : I got the filter from you, from a post u've made last year on -- Support.magix.net -- 'Super Mep2004 performance enchancement' ;)
U see these days isn't hard to find almost anything in the net.
(it seems to me that u've stucked with this filter for some time now so I'm pretty sure that it worth the try)
Thx a lot for u'r reply and the filter.

I use Avisynth alot but it's hard to get started with it. What I did was to download some simple scripts and kept after it until they worked. You just need to commit to it and it will get easier the more you work with it.

Then may I ask u: If u compared 'pixiedust' with 'wavelet denoise filter' what could u say about their speed/quality?
**I 2 searched to find some scripts that I could use... as the 'scripts' thing still looks very... キュンキュン <挨拶. すこし、サイトを整理しました to me.
I can say I was very lucky to find ___Didee's combo script, which looks to be exactly what I was lookin' for...
Now I really have to go to that 'special school' to learn Chinese so I'll be able to use it.
A big thx to Didee.(so I guess Dexter is the stupid one in u'r family).
:stupid: by the way has anyone read that?--> http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=3905&
maybe I'm a little drunk right now but it seems totaly funny.

You might be interested in the note I wrote today about an optimal workflow that uses both temporal (FFT3D) and spacial (Neat Image) denoisers together to create a result that is beyond words:

Above is a good mirror of ourselves. I didn't feel I fell into that group but maybe I am like all the rest.

I have always lack the play time I need to test all of these plug-ins. During the "Holidays" I will give some a try. One nice thing about "Avisynth" there is something new everyday to learn.

Happy Holidays to all.

I hear good things about FFT3D and after I took a look at u'r work it really made me wonder... u'r combination sure looks very promisin', but the thing is I'll spent Christmas with my folks and I'll be leaving soon so unlike rfmmars I won't be able to test it this year ;) but it's all ready in my list: "things to do", so when I'll get back...
thx.

I guess u'r just a humman after all, like the rest of us regardless of all those dreams you keep havin' as a young boy (that u have special powers and all that...) ;)
I agree with u mostly on the "there is something new everyday to learn" part, but that goes for everything... I guess u all ready know that.

Ho-Ho-Ho, Marry Cristmas to u all /I hope u all get a 'super_compiuter' straight from NASA'S labs ;)
