View Full Version : encoding for PSP problems

Ok so here's my problem.
I use the psp video profile without altering it,and encode some videos. But then when i transfered them to the psp,it said "unsupported formet".What went wrong?
The videos were xvid.
And i used a plain avs.
DirectShowSource("D:\Desktop PC\TV Shows\A\Arrested Development\Season 2\arrested.development.201.hdtv-lol.avi")

So in order to get a working mp4 you need to split video and audio.Encode them seperately and then join them?
Y all that fuss? It's very time consuming!

@Cris Benoit: follow the instructions in this package: http://x264.nl/psp/x264-psp.exe
x264 encoding section apart... :)

I'm confused.Y should i follow this moethod when there is a gui programm for it?
Seriously, are audio and video needed to be encoded seperately?
EDIT:With x264psp you encode only the audio? What does it do?Also what's with the atomchanger,i'm so confused!
Another EDIT:I think i got it.You seperate audio and video from a file, you encode audio into 48k lc-aac you edit the avs and bat and then run tha .bat?IS that it?
Sharktooth
17th December 2005, 16:32
You can use the full MeGUI (and not the x264 version) to encode both Video and Audio (video with my PSP profile and audio as LC-AAC at 48khz).
BUT, you need to follow certain rules (there are limits on resolution and FPS, audio must be LC-AAC, etc..).
You can find all those rules in the package i've linked in the previous post.
The MP4 file you obtain should be processed with ATOM CHANGER (check the .bat file inside the x264-psp.exe archive) or you PSP won't be able to play it back (damn sony!).

Where can i find the ful version?I only found the x264 and the snow one.
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 17:12
Ok i found it finally. For audio shall i use faac or naac? Are there any profiles available?
As for your video profiles, are 19 or 19a the latest?
Sharktooth
17th December 2005, 17:14
naac is nero digital. if you havent nero you cant use it.
faac is open source and you can get it just by searching the web.
the latest profiles are v19a.
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 17:27
I have nerodigital, but when i put the directory of besweet on the megui settings it says to make surte that some files are in there.Where can i find aacenc32.dll and aac.dll?
I already have nero digital installed on my computer though.
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 17:38
So every time i want to make an avc i have to split audio and video encode then mux then use atomchanger? It takes lots of time, and you have to be in front of the pc.
Isn't there an automated way to do that?
Sharktooth
17th December 2005, 17:42
you have NOT to split video and audio encoding.
Just use MeGUI (full) and then process the MP4 with atomchanger.
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 18:06
So both on the video and audio tab i should put the avi.
Ok and the question remaining.Where can i get acenc32.dll and aac.dll that megui asks for?
Sharktooth
17th December 2005, 18:13
what avi?!?!!?
those DLL belongs to nero. they're usually in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\AudioPlugins
If you haven't nero 6.x or 7.x installed those DLL are not there.
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 18:16
No i meant as for your statement that i don't have to seperate audio and video from avi in order to encode them.
EDIT:As for the dlls you're right.I was looking on the ahead folder not the common files.
Sharktooth
17th December 2005, 18:17
You must create the avisynth script for importing the avi first...
However this discussion does not belong to this thread... MeGUI usage can be discussed in the MeGUI thread.
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 18:24
Yes i know that.Ok lets clear things up.What i have understand so far is.
I export the audio stream from a video. Then i use the no audio option from vdub, and i now have a soundless avi (only video),and the audio seperate. Then i create the neccesary avs.
So i select the avs as the video input and the exported audio as the audio input on the full megui.
So far am i right,or have i done something that is not neccesary?
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 18:48
Ok i did it and it worked, but other than vdub isn't there a quicker way to seperate audio from video?
bond
17th December 2005, 21:43
split
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 22:03
What do you mean by "split"?
bond
17th December 2005, 22:09
i split the discussion from the megui profiles thread
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 22:20
Oh i see, thanx for bothering to do so!
Now as for what i'm asking is there an opinion?Am i doing the procedure correctly by seperating audio and video with vdub and then encode them with megui or is there a shortcut for that matter?
bond
17th December 2005, 22:32
i guess it doesnt matter how you produce the .mp4, as long as its spec compliant (and you follow the other restrictions regarding encoding features, resolution aso) before you f* it up with the atomchanger
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 23:00
Yes i know,i'm just saying that it's time consuming this way.Isn't there a more automated way to get the video and audio stream from a file?
bond
17th December 2005, 23:05
whats so hard about using megui?
Chris Benoit
17th December 2005, 23:16
Nothing is wrong about megui,i meant seperating the audio and video stream of a file is time consuming.Cause i have to demux the audio stream from vdub and then save the avi as a soundless one and then create an avs for the video input.
All that take a lot of action. Can't they be done in fewer steps?
bond
18th December 2005, 00:12
in the time you are posting that question over and over again you would have done the whole demuxing already ;)
if you want an easy and crappy solution uses sony's file creator
Chris Benoit
18th December 2005, 00:48
Well i don't have problem doint it once. But since i need to convert 3 files per day i can't do that whole precodeure every time.
As for the file creator you mentioned, where can i find it?I searched google but nothing relevant came up.

Guys i'm having problems playing avc on my pc.I do everything by the book, and i use atomchanger for the final output, but psp just doesb't play the files.
Any ideas?

@Chris Benoit
What software version? Only 2.00 and above supports .avc. Only 2.50 and above gets rid of the sticky frame problem.
It's not looking good for Sharky's new build! I haven't begun the second pass yet, but the bitrate calculator is detecting a 25fps file!
Chris Benoit
20th December 2005, 15:02
I'm launching v.2.00 from the mph firmware launcher, but the avc i make don't work. They do work fine on my pc though...
How can i check the fps on an mp4,maybe i get the fps problem as well.
EDIT:BTW,Nice avs script, but y did you remove the "audio=false" line?It saves a lot of time,it saves the trouble of saving the video as a soundless one with vdub,so y don't you use it anymore, have you found any better solution?
Clown shoes
20th December 2005, 15:07
My best suggestion would be to try pspvideo9 to make a .avc first, just to make sure your PSP is definatley reading .avcs from MPHs launcher. This is a quick and easy way to test it out. If that works then we can look at why your encodes aren't working.
Clown shoes
20th December 2005, 15:10
Ahh, well spotted. That's because the file I was working with was 25fps, so I extracted the audio, then slowed the video to 23.976. According to another thread in this forum, software version 2.60 is now able to play back 23.976fps files. I shall be testing that out this evening.
Crap!! Sorry I keep double posting (slaps own wrist)
Chris Benoit
20th December 2005, 15:21
Yes i've heard that, but does it only support 23.976 not 25?
AVC work on the firmware launcher cause i've tried some that i have downloaded from a site and they run just fine,it's the ones i make that don't run.Although they do seem to be recognized.I mean the name is shown when i'm highlighting so does the time duration, even the avc tag is shown, but they just don't run.
BTW what's the significance of converting to yv12?
Clown shoes
20th December 2005, 15:39
Only 23.976 from what I hear, but I don't mind slowing down from 25fps.
Did the avc tag show up on the files you downloaded? Is there any chance they weren't .avc?
Can you post your process?
Chris Benoit
20th December 2005, 15:50
Yes the avc tag apperead and i'm positive they are avc,and here's the page i got them from:
http://psp.ign.com/articles/637/637459p1.html
The procedure i follow is:
i extract audio with avimuxgui,i open video on vdub and i save it as a no sound one.
Then i create the avs script and encode it with megui psp sharkooth profile, then i encode audio as lc-aac 128 cbr with belight,i then mux audio and video, and then use atomchanger.
Chris Benoit
20th December 2005, 16:09
Yes it is,48k.

Chris Benoit, plz stop poluting other threads with your issue!
you have here your own thread for your issue, if you dont manage to get the answers you need here, there is no need to discuss your issue in other threads which are not about your issue too
thx

mph firmware launcher isn't very stable atm. so don't be surprised if the firmware you loaded doesn't play your avc. half of the videos i tested with it didn't work, although my psp was able to detected the file type(it doesn't say corrupt/incompatible file type on the menu). and the ones that will play usually freezes up my psp after about 10-15 seconds. also the power saving features kick in while the videos are playing(which they're not supposed to).
Chris Benoit
20th December 2005, 23:10
Actually i was using the 1.3.7 that had problems with avc support.MPH released 1.3.7 several times, like 3,4 times and i was using a faulty one.Now that i switched to better one,the same videos that ddin't play, now do!

21st December 2005, 11:02
Yes i've heard that, but does it only support 23.976 not 25?
25 fps still out of sync.
Chris Benoit
21st December 2005, 12:08
For versions 2.50 and below what's the supported framerate?IS it 29.970 or 29.976?
If i change the framerate via vdub and not via the avisynth script used on megui will i have a problem?
Clown shoes
21st December 2005, 12:20
2.50 is 29.97fps. But if you've upgraded as far as 2.50 you may as well go to 2.60 which supports 23.976fps. SOOO much easier to work with.
Also anything below 2.50 still has the sticky frame problem!
In summary, if you're at all interested in nice quality video on your PSP, 2.60 is the only way to go.
Chris Benoit
21st December 2005, 12:24
I haven't updated i'm still using the launcher, but it supports up to 2.50.
What do you mena by sticky frame?
And by 29.97 you mean 29.970 not 29.976 right?I need to knwo the exact number in order to make the right conversion with vdub.
Clown shoes
21st December 2005, 12:28
No I mean 29.97fps. I think your getting confused with 23.976fps!
The sticky frame problem, is a slight sticking just before the I frame on all PSPs below 2.50. Not very nice really.
Chris Benoit
21st December 2005, 12:38
Oh really so there's no 29.976 whatsoever?I thought that there was 29.970 and then 29.976 but,i must have confused it.
Chris Benoit
21st December 2005, 19:01
Damnit i don'y know why but the last videos i've encoded with megui don't have pisture, they only have sound!
Then i tried encoding with pspvideo9 in avc and they played just fine,so what could result in psp not showing picture?
Clown shoes
21st December 2005, 19:04
Do they show pictures if you play them on your PC?
Chris Benoit
21st December 2005, 19:19
Yes they do.
I'd use pspvideo9 but although the wuality is fine,a lot of ghosting appears. Can i encode just the video with pspvideo 9 and then mux it with audio?
Chris Benoit
21st December 2005, 23:06
Clown Shoes
Can you plz do me a favor and send me an mp4 you encoded using avc on megui(a sample one of course, not longer than 8-10 secs),so that i can test if its working,so i can decide if its the launcher's fault or my encoding?
