Not sure if this is possible in VDub (maybe some other program?), but I was wondering if it's possible to convert 16:9 widescreen AVIs to 4:3 pan&scan.

The reason I want to do this is for watching videos on my iPod - the screen is so small already that adding black bars to the top and bottom for widescreen makes the vide insanely tiny (even full screen videos are pretty small!).

I have a feeling a ran across this in one of the DVD backup programs a while back (maybe Scenarist can do it?) but I tried searching in the forums and couldn't come up with anything. Anyway, help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I think you can do this with the Resize-Filter plus some Cropping.

Yes, you can crop.

It occurs to me as I read surreal's request that I don't think I've ever seen an amateur tool to do "pan & scan". I understand this involves introduction of "camera movement" to keep the desired elements in the new (and shrunken) frame. Has anyone attempted this?
