I have a video encoded with DivX 6.0.3 which used to play fine. With the new DivX installed, Media Player 9, Power DVD and GSpot (MS a/v) crash !! However VDub and the bundled DivX player can still play it. Here's a small sample (http://rapidshare.de/files/9201026/crash_clip.avi.html) of the video.
Is it still safe to use 6.1 for encoding at least ?

I'm having similar problems with playback. I'm using windows media player 10 and the new DivX codec v6.1. I have some episodes of star trek which Gspot v2.21 says are encoded in DivX 5.0. The play back was perfect untill the installation od vesion DivX 6.1. Now there is a horrible blocky/color distortion which renders the video useless to watch. Is this a problems with the new codec, settings in media player, or perhaps these files are encoded in Xvid (I have DivX set to play all MPEG4 files)?

I downloaded a copy of the clip - works OK for me at home but we'll look into it next week.
TotalChaos: We found a problem (OK, Doom9 found it ;)) in the decoder last week that I hope to release a patch for soon (along with the Psychovis issue).

OS, service pack, 32/64-bit
System RAM
Graphics card (Brand/Model/RAM/Driver revision)
DirectX revision
And a screenshot of GSpot trying to render the video stream (or GraphEdit) would also help a lot.
You can post these or e-mail them to amayo (at) divxcorp [dot] com.
Thanks :)

Looks like there is a problem with this clip in WMP10 when both "Reduce CPU spikes" and "Output YUV 4:2:0" are enabled in the decoder config. For a short term fix simply turn off one or the other.
Thanks for the report :)

Exactly! I found that out yesterday. Here's what I observed.
Enable Reduce CPU spikes and Output YUV 4:2:0 in decoder setting.
Other settings are "don't care".
1. Play with wmplayer 9 -> crash.
(Disable either one of the options and it plays fine.)
2a. Open with GSpot 2.52 B01
2b. Resize GSpot window to the minimum possible.
2c. Press [1] under MS A/V to render. DivX tray icon appears.
2d. Maximize GSpot window.
2e. Press [2] under MS A/V to test -> crash
3a. Open with GSpot 2.52 B01
3b. Maximize GSpot window.
3c. Press [1] under MS A/V to render. DivX tray icon appears.
3d. Press [2] under MS A/V to test.
3e. Press stop.
3f. Open with wmplayer. Plays with increased brightness & weird colour bands on right edge.
