AutoGK doesn't start up properly since I installed the new DivX 6.1 Codec.

See screenshots!

Is it a problem with autogk or DivX?

Whenever the API changes, the integration between the tools ceases to operate properly. It has been a frequent occurance, historically, and in this particular case, has already been reported: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=104042

Oh ok, I didn't notice that it was already reported.

Thanks!

DivX didn't do any breaking changes I think, StaxRip works fine with it. I think both me and len0x complaint about the breaking changes with every build and DivX reacted introducing a new interface in 6.0.3.

I am having same problem after installing DivX 6.1. I tried to start AGK 2.26 and got an "Auto GK has encountered a problem and has to shut down" message. I tried uninstall AGK and re install, same problem occured. Uninstalled 2.26 and installed 2.20. It, 2.20, started fine but when I tried to select the DivX codec a warning "unsupported codec, will use XviD" popped up. Durn DivX codec anyway. Shoot and other expletives.   I only got to use 2.26 once and it worked great.

Again, thanks for an excellent program. I'll keep an eye out for next version. :thanks:

@stax

Correct, from v6.0.3, all is OK, if done correctly, applications will automatically be able to use later versions without any change.

Yes, the DivX guys had mailed me a precise description of the new interface. XviD didn't do any breaking changes for ages and DivX was always a major pain until 6.0.3. Only last week I had to rework support for VFW codecs to be more robust because a user reported a bug due to installing different codec versions back and forth. I'm now tracking the codec version to reset the settings in case a new version is detected. I hope this time it lasts a little bit longer.

DivX is a real nuisance for me starting with v6.0.0. Never experienced any problems with xvid so far. And I'm thinking of get rid of it for good.

According to the latest poll you are not alone thinking like that. In my application it will remain however a first class citizen though I'm not permitted to integrate it as good as XviD (automatic download).

I've made a "sticky" thread on this subject, to avoid having many new threads started. I've asked that followups continue in the Development thread, so that the discussion doesn't split any further.

Thank you.

do this in divx.dll in windows/system32:

ok new plan:
- get BIEW binary editor
- open divx.dll with it in hex mode
- goto 0008ABCD address (F5) and change(F4) 00 to 07, then update (F2)
- works like a charm :)

Well, my take on all this is how you play your videos back. Industry standards now seem to want DivX compatability on DVD players, not Xvid which is perceived as another format for pirated product (at least the MPAA seems to be bellowing this every day). I play my vids on a Philips 642 which means I can't use Xvid (at least not with Qpel/GMC enabled which seems to be the norm these days). I liked using AutoGK as it provided a convenient means of conversion with consistent results. Now I have to go looking for something else. For my own stuff however I continue to use DVD High Quality (maximum bitrates) for capturing which looks very nice on a 102" projector. The compressed formats are for other projects and I do appreciate all you programmers for creating this stuff. If you feel it's time for you to leave the field, I completely understand. Thanks again...

It won't play DivX encoded with qpel either so I fail to see your point. If you use the correct XviD settings then it should play just as well. So either DivX encoded with a Home Theater profile or XviD encoded with a Home Theatre profile should work just as well. Step outside of the profile with either and you might have problems.

In terms of piracy it is true that scene rules don't allow for DivX so most of the illegal stuff out there is encoded with XviD. Still that has nothing to do with XviD itself really and both it and DivX are still just MPEG-4.

Also there is no XviD compatiblity scheme (why create such a thing when you can just comply with MPEG-4 specs?) to comply with so you can't really say that industry standards aren't pushing for XviD compatibity, since there is no such thing. I would agree however that they aren't pushing for ASP compatibility or anything like that.
