From DivX Labs (http://www.divxlabs.com):
Today, we're excited to announce that the DivX 6.1 codec is finally here! It sports a ton of new features and enhancements, perhaps the most impressive being a massive improvement in encoding speed. According to our benchmarks, even a modest single CPU will run anywhere from 14 to 80% faster than the 6.0 codec depending on the quality mode selected. At the same time, brand new support for HT, SMP, Dual Core, and Dual Core + HT CPUs allows for gains of up to 300%!
If you've been waiting for an excuse.. err.. "reason" to go dual core it's just arrived! ;) But enough of this small talk, let's delve into the details...

i couldnt go to sleep without giving it a quick test
comparing the encoding speeds from some tests i made this afternoon:
source file:9 minute vob file(2 pass) single core pc
divx 6.03- 16m,41s
divx6.1--13m,20s
imagine youre converting a 90minute movie and youll get a rough idea of how faster it is

Seems considerably faster to me, which is great as I can use better encoding settings.
This has put Divx back on the map, and back on top!!!

Just done a quick couple of tests with avi.NET and saw about 10% to 15% speed increase.

they say even mpeg quantization is improved, i've got to try it!

You can now specify a target quantizer instead of an average bitrate during encoding
That means, Constant Quality Mode in a certified profile?

That means, Constant Quality Mode in a certified profile?
That means the codec will attempt to maintain the target quantizer you specify but raise it temporarily if required to ensure fluid playback on DivX devices. If the quantizer you choose never causes the encoder to exceed the capabilities of devices in the DivX profile you have selected the effect will be constant quality.
It works very well IMHO :)

yea it sounds awesome, but will movies encoded in divx 6.1 work with a stand alone dvd player? like the philips dvp642.......

They certainly will! Just be sure to select the correct DivX profile for your device. For example, for the DVP642 ensure that you select "Home Theater" profile in the encoder configuration window.
When you choose a DivX profile in the encoder configuration window all of the options that are incompatible with the profile are automatically disabled so that you can't select them by mistake.

ah thxs dude now i can install divx 6.1 without a doubt :D , i was afraid it wouldn't work with divx 6 so i was stuck with the old 5.0.3 version

now only make the decoder have no postprocessing per default so that the masses of noobs using divx see their poor encoding skills finally, I'm fed up with such idiots doing encodes who check them just with postprocessor magic feat. DivX ...

anyone else got a problem with the psychovisual enhancements, see:

Yes, psychovisual enhancement īsharpenī locks VirtualDub 1.6.11 and codec configuration window.
System: 1 athlon XP 2400+.. (6.0.3 working fine)

Ehm.. great codec.. fantastic quality.. I like the website too.. my pets are crazy for it.. but..
I confirm that VDub 1.6.11 and VDubMod1.5.2 enter "crash mode" when I just select SHAPE in psychovisual..
I just need to MOVE THE MOUSE on the option (before applying it) and both CPU and MEM usage go to 100%..
So..any idea?
PS: My pets love much more XviD and x264.. :p

Now divx 6.1 has 2 wr points GMC. I had undersize here on 2 pass and no problem with 3 pass.

Just to dispell any rumours before they start, we still use only 1 point GMC. As it turns out some older builds of the encoder used 2 point GMC with the second warp point zeroed by mistake. We maintain this purely for compatibility.
Well spotted though ;)

Just tested the Divx Converter, but it always show me this when the encoding progress reach 50%:

i click the link"more detail" but it redirect me to www.divx.com
Any idea?
Some suggestions about this simple Divx Converter:
It would be nice if i can change the process priority, and able to change the encoded video files output directory/name. ;)

Yong, please contact DivX Support with this issue.
This thread is focused on DivX 6.1 codec, not DivX Converter. Converter will support the 6.1 codec in a future version.
Thanks!

HE-3 beta was 60% faster on my celeron 2 ghz than Divx6.0.3 . But divx 6.1 is only slightly faster than divx 6. I know that impovements was for multicore. Indeed itīs strange.

earlier, xvid used to crash always while encoding, now it's divx, i checked ram and all, everythings fine!pls can anyone help?
DVD , 16:9 NTSC R1
AVS Script resized to 704X384
FieldDeinterlace(full=false)
Decomb 5.2.2
VirtualDub Latest Release
Avisynth 2.5.6a (comes with autogk 2.26)
First pass ran fine, but 2nd pass crashed!
Extreme Quality Mode, 1700 kbps avg bitrate!
Divx Encoding crashing even if deinterlace is not used in some other dvd's!

Can someone please give me an explanation of my following questions?? Or just a link?
What is "Rotate artwork and product information"?
What is the difference between "H.263" and "H.263 Optimized"?
Is it good to use "Quarter-pixel search" and "Global motion compensation"?
Is it good to use "Psychovisual Enhancements"?
What is the difference between "Shaping" and "Masking"?
I am not going to use my videos in a hardware player! I want the ultimate quality divx can give!
Many thanks!

Rotate artwork and product information = The Divx Player/Codec GUI will attempt to connect to its' servers whenver u are online, and display some news,My Advice, "Disable It"!
H.263 is the default quantization for mpeg-4 , H.263 Optimized is a better optimized version, my advice, "Use H.263 Optimized"
Quarter Pixel (Q-Pel) and GMC are 2 mpeg-4 tools which are mostly used in low bitrate low filesize videos, if u are going for high bitrates, u do not need them!
Psychovisuals are mostly buggy, so if u don't plan to go for low filesizes, disable it! The are a form of adaptive quantization, in which bitrates are adjusted so that less bitrate is awarded to places in videos we don't see properly, and more to others!
Shaping and masking, this one i don't remember, maybe gej or fluffy or kid or digital56 can help u with one!

Work's well until you try using it via CLI and not GUI. Even on GUI when you select HT profile and target quatizer mode was selected before - it switches back to 1 pass CBR mode, so you have to manually reselect quant-based encoding. Effect for the CLI is that you are not able to use HT profile with quant mode at all (it always switches to CBR mode if sees HT profile selected)...

I think maybe you are using "-b1q <quant>" instead of "-bv1q <quant>". Can you try the latter?
It switches back in the GUI when you go from Unconstrained profile to Home Theater profile because in Unconstrained profile fixed quantizer is used instead and that is not valid in profile encoding. We can improve the default in future.

hey, anyone had any luck with mpeg-2 quantization?
i tried mpeg-2 and yes i think they did some improvements.. at high bitrates it looks better than h.263 optimized "i think". it's still sharp but doesn't produce ring efffects
