Hi everyone
I recently bought a pci capture card solely for transfering old vhs tapes to dvd.
The capturing goes fine with no probs,audio and video are in sync when capturing to dvd.
When converting the dvd file to divx the audio is not in sync with the video, i tried autogk,aviNet and StaxRip but all give me audio sync problem.
The captured dvd file plays fine.
any idea what is causing this?
Thanks
Ricardo

It's a common problem when using PCI capture devices if they don't use hardware encoding, for example ATI which needs the audio brought in via the sound card instead of the capture device. There are plenty of solutions already posted here which you could find with the Search feature.

Sounds like you're doing something wrong in setting up your conversions, not a problem in capturing.
As an experiment, try the following, neither of which requires any scripting:
1) Converting one .VOB using VirtualDubMOD
or
2) Converting all of the .VOBs using MPEGMediator

StaxRip is very versatile using cli preparers and AviSynth so maybe you can config StaxRip to deal with your source differently as the default values. I would verify DGIndex first, all apps you've tried rely on it (AviSynth too) I think. If you can confirm it's a DGIndex problem then maybe neuron2 can fix it if you provide him the source file.

i tried mpegmediator, converted only a fraction of the file and it was in sync when i have more free time i will convert the whole file and check if it is in sync
thanks

setarip_old, I've had the same problem many times. Something in the MPEG-2 that maintains the audio timing isn't kept when converting to .AVI, so there will be often be varying audio synch problems, even when there are none in the original capture file.

@ricardo.santos
In StaxRip demuxing using ProjectX might work with your source, it seems it can demux (incl. cutting) vob, didn't know that until now. In the options edit the ProjectX preparer to handle your source. What you have to edit there is the input and output file extensions. Input should be vob, video output probably m2v and audio output probably ac3, mp2, mpa. You might as well teach StaxRip to use any other muxer with command line interface.

thanks everyone for their tips!
@setarip and Stax: i will test your solutions tomorrow as the clip is a bit long and post the results tomorrow
Again thanks to everyone for your help.

here they are as promissed:
@setaip: mpeg mediator kept the audio in sync during the whole clip
@stax: StaxRip converted the clip using Projectx, the audio is in Sync but it kind of "jumps from time to time", fast forwards a bit and then goes back to normal playback. used version 0.9.1.4
when projecct x was demuxing the clip i saw a lot of warnings in the dos window about dropped gops and b-frames.
thanks everyone

Sometimes older (software and users) is better ;>}
