View Full Version : 2nd pass settings?

I'm trying to encode some pretty difficult high motion content (sports) at 600kbps and the 2nd pass settings are driving me nuts because I can't seem to find the optimal settings.
Is there a general consensus on which 2nd pass settings produce the most consistent visual quality?

I currently have them set as follows (using FFDshow encoder):

Max bitrate: 2000 kbps
Max overflow improvement: 50%
Max overflow degradation: 60%

I-Frames
Boost by: 10%
Below I-frame distance of: 1
...reduce I-frames bitrate by: 20%

Curve Compression
High bitrate scenes: 0%
Low bitrate scenes: 0%
Bitrate payback delay: 300 frames
Payback proportionally

so the defaults don't get you good results?

Max overflow improvement: 50%
Max overflow degradation: 60%

These should almost never be touched. try the defaults of 0.

I think the problem is that the ffdshow defaults are different than the Xvid build defaults. The ffdshow defaults *are* 60% and 60%.
It's my understanding that the 2nd pass settings for ffdshow were entirely borrowed from Xvid, which is why I'm asking the question on this particular forum. Whatever works for Xvid 2nd pass should work equally well for ffdshow.

What are the Xvid defaults for all the 2nd pass settings?

Muchos gracias! :)

I wonder... if ffdshow 2nd pass settings are copied from Xvid... how come the defaults are completely different? Should someone tell Milan to correct it?
