I traditionally have been using DVD Shrink and have been pretty happy with the results. But lately I strted getting movies which put an application in not responding state after the analysis is complete. I was playing with options, restarting application and even a computer with the same neagtive outcome at the end. Has anyone encountered this problen and what would be a remedy? If there is no remedy which application could substitute DVD Shrink and is having similar speed and efficiency?
Thank you
Victor

Could try putting the movie onto your HDD with dvd decrypter or similar app. Could be that the dvd's you are trying to encode have some new fangled protection system. Or try nero recode if you have that.
Made by the same person (check out the interface similarities etc).

Hi!
Please name the specific DVD(s) creating this behavior. based on your Brooklyn, NY location, I'm presuming the DVD(s) is/are Region 1...

@ setarip_old
The latest are: "the great raid", "Brothers Grimm", "Dark water". The region may or may not be 1 - usually it doesn't give hard time with other "good-behaving" DVDs.
I am just wondering what would be a connection between ability to backup and location?
@ thewonderer
I was trying dvd decrypter - it hangs too. Unfortunately I don't have the latest 7 nero
Thanks to all

Based on the titles you've mentioned, your problem certainly doesn't have anything to do with copy protection. I'd speculate that your system is overheating. You might want to open it up and clean the innards, removing all dust and grime that may have accumulated over time...

JUst recently I have done that, even purchased dust off buster. The source of confusion is that computer doesn't hang having all other apps responding. Also this prolblem occures randomly approximatly on 10% of DVDs I work with. One DVD hangs and the next one could be perfectly OK. Thank you for help anyway I'll keep researching.

doesn't sound exactly like your prob, but I ran into my first ever problem trying to rip brothers grimm. Eactivation error? anyway, turns out I was running dvd decryptor 3.5.1 on that comp. upgraded to 3.5.4 and problem seems to be resolved. here's a shot of the successful read log:
W 22:39:59 Possible Structure Protection Found!
W 22:39:59 2 areas have been marked as 'suspect'.
W 22:39:59 Dummy sectors will be inserted where necessary.

I think there is some new protection, or a variant of an old protection, on these titles. I ripped them successfully using DVDDecrypter 3.5.4.0, but then when I try to open the rip in DVDShrink, I get a message saying "Invalid data in x:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB. Overlapped I/O operation in progress." This is also the case with the new release of Toy Story 2. For most of the new problem titles, I used IFOEdit to rip in the "movie only" mode from the DVDDecryter rip, but the files will not play. Then I run DVDShrink (either to reduce the size or just a straight rip) from the IfoEdit rip and thse files worked fine...until I got to Toy Story 2. When I try to open the IfoEdit rip with DVDShrink, I get a runtime error in Visual C++. Very strange...

I successfully burned each of the aforementioned movies with DVDFabDecrypter, then VOBblanker then shrink. This takes a little more time but works perfectly every time I have had to use this method

@oddwunn
Run your rip through FixVTS (www.videohelp.com/~FixVTS) and it will load in DVD Shrink no problem.

Thank you guys for the very good suggestions. I've downloaded those applications and was able to cope with a latest problematic title - "underclassman" and even the title "2046" released in Hong Kong which was incorrectly structured in a first place. The results are amaizing. The only wrinkle remains that when launches it gives the warning about incorrect structure and stops. However, when I disregard warning and continue the burned DVD is perfectly OK. Just some little incovenience that you need to be near the computer in order disregard the warning. Any suggestions?

The only wrinkle remains that when launches it gives the warning about incorrect structure and stops. Which of the several programs suggested behaves this way, DVDFab Decrypter, VOBBlanker, FixVTS, or DVD Shrink?

Sorry, slip of mind. It's a Nero 6.6. Although when you disregard warning and continue the burned DVD is perfectly OK. It happens after DVDFab Decrypter->FixVTS->DVD Shrink combination when DVD Shrink calls Nero.

The "file allocation" notification from NERO most often is due to the existence of a -0- byte .VOB. Other times, it arises due to "Easter eggs" in .VOBs that are not associated with .IFOs. It really shouldn't come up very often - but peeking at your computer for a second at the start of the burn process is a small price to pay for a good burn ;>}

My greatest problem is still a great mystery, I downloaded the DVDFabDecrypter and have tried ripping THE CAVE. Unfortunately, the fabdecrypter just hangs in the middle and does not continue. I made several attempts and problems continues to repeat. Can anyone help!! The following list are my problem dvd files: Cinderella Man, The Cave, Bewitched, The Gospel.
