ffdshow MPEG-4 encoder guide?

Is there a guide out there that explains all the encoding parameters available in the ffdshow MPEG-4 encoder? I'm having trouble producing output playable by the ffdshow decoder.

I hate asking such a newbie question, but I've searched low and high and couldn't find anything.
