Well, the next Media generation is out-there, I would like to know what'll be the next Mpeg4 standards for them.
I thought they could have 1450mb per RIPPED movie (exactly 1/3 of a DVD), I guess 700mb today is not enough any more.
And what about the resolution? 640X480, 800X600 or 1024X768 ?

Can you tell me what term to enter for search? Or at least a thread where this is discussed?

the first thing you should realise is that hd-dvd has nothing to do with xvid and divx and therefore this thread is totally wrongly placed here... :D

@ bond
Youエre right if you are telling us that is something people can adept by using search. But you are totally wrong to answer in this way because this is not a normal question.
The question of new codecs for hdtv is brand new and very interesting for many people and it is not good manners to fob off people with such an answer. :)
This is worth a good answer from you and Iエm also hoping for this :)

the question was about what "standards" hd-dvd and bluray (not hdtv) will use
1) the codecs are known for a long time and have been discussed also already very often (again, they are mpeg-4 avc, vc-1 and mpeg-2)
2) what bitrate they are going to use, well the bitrate you like i assume
3) about the possible resolutions, i started a thread discussing that just one week ago or so
so these already discussed things + posting in the xvid forum, made me use the "use search smily" :p

I think he doesn't mean the HDTV standards... Maybe he refers to the TDX Rules...
As far as I know, the latest revision was in 2002, so they are getting too outdated.
Maybe there will be a new revision when HD-DVD/Blu-Ray will be released... who knows?

as he wrote "HD-DVD and Blue-Ray", he obviously meant "HD-DVD and Blue-Ray" ;)

There are rules from 2005, but I think that this kind of matters has no place here...

Wouldn't this thing fit in the 'General Discussion' section?

Wouldn't this thing fit in the 'General Discussion' section?hd-dvd doesnt really have a home now, but as the initial question was actually about mpeg-4 (avc) it might also fit in the avc forum

Blue-RayIt's Blu-ray actually (see http://www.blu-raydisc.com/) ;)
And before you can think about rip resolutions, perhaps 1) the discs first need to come out, and 2) then we need tools to rip 'em. You didn't think managed copy (which is not even mandatory on Blu-ray), would mean you could make backups the way you're used to? Managed copy means DRM, there ain't no free copying because as well all know, the customers are all potential criminals and need to be shackled to make sure we don't break the law or do anything studios don't like.

hd-dvd includes normal dvd discs, so media-wise we should be able to produce such discs already. now we only need to know the specs :D

don't forget the authoring tools.
I have a lingering fear that while these upcoming players can handle everything because they have the proper chipsets, they will only play MPAA approved content, sorta like DVD-A players only play DVD-A content with a watermark. I could easily imagine the MPAA logic "if it isn't DRM'ed it cannot be legal" being burnt into firmware.

hm i dont think the hd-dvd people want to destory the whole "sell hd-dvd authoring tools to joe average" market. its also a major point for joe average to buy new hd-dvds and burners
