once a backup has been made can a standalone recorder be used if additional copies are needed

Yes, if you use Decrypter to rip it, all copy protections are removed. I'm not sure I've seen any DVD recorders that have 2 bays, but there's other ways to input, I guess. Not sure why you need to, as opposed to burning with computer, but that's your business.

Actually any of the DVR's with built-in hard drives will make a perfect 1:1 backup. I use the pioneer dvr-520 and dvr-633 set top recorders and they both do a great job of duplicating a backup.
