View Full Version : Correct method to pass LB between PgcEdit and ImgBurn

Hi,
When using ImgBurn to burn the ISO image produced by PgcEdit what is the correct (easiest) way to insure the LB as calculated by PgcEdit will used by ImgBurn.

Currently I've been having PgcEdit place the value in the clipboard before starting the ImgBurn step and selecting in ImgBurn Tools/Write Tab and under Options: Layer Break / User Specified and pasting the value that PgcEdit put on the clip board then doing the burn.

Blutach's How to burn Dual Layer Disks with PgcEdit (BTW very nice manual Blutach :) helped me to burn 3 DLs so far no problems) implies the value will be passed from PgcEdit automatically (when using DVDD to burn - should be similar to ImgBurn), but what option needs to be selected in ImgBurn to accomplish this. In the "Other things to consider section" Blutach indicates to set the layer break back to automatic, which would imply user supplied is the correct way. But unless the value is pasted manually the box in ImgBurn was either empty or appeared to have the value from a previous burn.

Also if the ISO image is burned later using ImgBurn in stand alone mode what option should be selected in ImgBurn. From what little I know about DVD structures the layer break info may (?) be contained in one of the files in the DVD and would also be in the ISO image. Does that imply ImgBurn will generate it's own or use what's available when the calculate optimal option is chosen?

Pardon if it's a stupid question I just don't want to make any coasters by leaving out a step or forgetting to do the cut and paste operation if it is not necessary. At my age I suffer brain f-rts frequently

:thanks:

Hi rcubed.

You can check to see if the value is passed through to IB by checking tools-settings-write (don't start the burn automatically). There's also a registry entry I think, if you want to check that way. So, if the sector is there, no worries. I have never found the need to put the value on the clipboard but it's nice to have.

Thanks for the nice words. All credit to r0lZ and LUK please.

It's passed via CLI so you'll never know if it's being used or not except for looking in the log during the burn.

'Optimal' should therefore be left selected all the time. If you try to burn standalone, ImgBurn should pick up the LB that PgcEdit has inserted via the info in the IFO files.
If it finds more than one (for some reason!), you'll get a box asking you to select which one you want to use.

hey LUK!!!

you state

ImgBurn should pick up the LB that PgcEdit has inserted via the info in the IFO files.

this means when you try to burn from an ISO NOT PASSED from PgcEdit does it not? Sending via PgcEdit is 100% ok right? Just wanted to clairify.

And hey...when is a new version of Imgburn coming out? I see betas around....you gonna give us a nearly Christmas present or what? ;-)

PgcEdit makes it possible for ImgBurn to use the LB you have selected. It is not sufficient to say "He, I want to put it here!". The ISO must be built so that the LB is correctly placed in the middle of the disc, and aligned with an ECC bloc. That's the job of PgcEdit.
PgcEdit removes also the seamless flag on the LB cell. This means that ImgBurn will probably use the right cell, because the cell is usable, and has the seamless bit clear. As explained by LUK, if another cell is suitable as well, ImgBurn will ask which cell you want to use. But if you launch ImgBurn directly from PgcEdit, the LB sector is passed via the CLI argument, so it will be used anyway.
In both cases, you don't need to force the LB in the ImgBurn setups. If you do so, remember to remove it or it may be used for another DVD later!

To be complete, note that the old method, using DVD Decrypter (which has no LB CLI argument), has to set the LB in the registry before launching DVD Decrypter. Thanks to LUK, it's not needed anymore (but still supported if you really want to burn with DVD Decrypter.)
