I have ripped the disc with the latest DVDFab Decrypter (2.9.6.0) but I'm having major problems with shrinking it to fit 4.5 GB. If I open it in Shrink or Recode, the final size is the size of the actual disc (~7 gigs) and can't be compressed.
And I can't use Shrink's re-author. The main movie is title 4, which is nowhere to be found in Shrink's reauthor mode.
Here's how it looks in both programs:

Your problem is the discs have protection that cannot be backed up with just these programs on their own.
I find processing the ripped files through VOBBlanker sorts out the files. Load the files into the software and just hit process. The files get processed to a new directory which can then be seen in Shrink/Recode.

Really? Only set input, output and hit PROCESS? Thanks! Gonna do it right now!

Yes. You leave everything as it is. I used this method to do Resident Evil 2 (R2) before DVD Decrypter could do it. It also didn't have the movie title in Shrink.
I might be possible to rip with DVD Decryppter but it needs a PSL2 file as well. VOBBlanker is a easier way.

After processing, I was left with a folder smaller than 4 GB... I don't know how, but I think I should have made a fresh rip.
Right now I'm trying AnyDVD (I updated to the latest version 5.5.5.1). God I hope this works:
Summary for drive H: (AnyDVD 5.5.5.1)
Drive (Hardware) Region: 2
Media is a Data DVD.
Booktype: dvd-rom (version 1), Layers: 2 (opposite)
Video DVD (or CD) label: LAYER_CAKE
Media is CSS protected!
Video Standard: PAL
Media is locked to region(s): 2 4 5!
RCE protection not found.
DVD structure appears to be correct.
Found & removed structural copy protection (Arccos, Puppetlock)!
Found & removed invalid VOBUs!
Autorun not found on Video DVD.
Found & removed 2 bad sector protections!
Emulating RPC-2 drive with region 2!

Well, I made it. Sort of.
AnyDVD removed all the junk. But the only problem is that the main movie is not compressable, so I had to use reauthor mode of DVD Shrink and luckily the size of the file was a bit under the 4 GB mark. I'm burning the thing now to a DVD+RW to see if it works fine in dvd player (had no problems with it on PC in vlc or mpc)

The end results with VOBBlanker was probably ok. These kind of protection is on the disc in a unreferenced VOB. This is data that is ignored by DVD Players as the data is not referenced in the IFO files. However, when the computer rips a DVD, it reads all the data and fails on the affected VOB. DVD player software also ignore it as well.
VOBBlanker will remove the unreferenced data and which is why it may turn out slightly smaller.
It maybe too late but, is the 4GB filesize and the 4GB size from using AnyDVD the same size?

Are you sure VOBBlanker is automatically removing "unwanted" stuff?
I have the region 1 (NTSC) DVD ripped to my hard drive using DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 + AnyDVD 5.1.1.1, it is 7.37 GB. When I loaded the .iso into daemon tools and opened in VOBBlanker, I find it just ignores the ILVU/multiangle segments as it cannot process them. Didn't notice any unreferenced material here, Shrink doesn't report anything. Overall it can compress the movie with nothing butchered out (not even French audio), to about 53%.
I wonder why the region 2 DVD is more complex.

The R2 appears to be much more hard to rip than the R1 version. And I heard something like the R2 version varies even from country to country (not sure).
The disc works fine in dvd player. But I wish I could have shrinked the whole disc, not just the movie. At least the VOBs didn't require any compression (not like I had a choice, it always said not compressable) so it looks great, just like the original dvd. :D

The R2 is harder to rip over the R1. It is also possible to have different Arcoss protection on the same DVD but from different R2 countries. Closer was one of the first to do this.

Here's the sure way to get it done right - How to backup ARccOS DVDs (http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=56078). It looks a little complicated, but it isn't really and it works!

Strange!
I had no problems making a R2 movie-only backup of this one, using DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

thanks for the guide. I'll use it on my next Arccos disc.

Next version will incorporate a wizard interface - makes it easy for anyone.

It's good to hear that some programmer is coming closer to making my July 18, 2005 musings at another forum come true, to wit:
1) DVD Decrypter v.3.54 has the ability to identify all bad sectors
2) DVD Decrypter v.3.54 has the ability to generate a log - that includes all bad sector identification
Surely there's a qualified programmer (perhaps "Chetwood" or other) who's a member of these forums, who can create a small tool to automate the creation and importing back into DVD Decrypter of the PSL file - to make this activity transparent to the user and eliminate the need for independent creation of PSL files and/or seeking out already-existing PSL files.
Doing so would maintain DVD Decrypter as a current program regarding its ability to deal with new versions of "ARccOS" copy protection schemes.
(As I've stated many times before, my own programming skills ended MANY years ago, with 8 bit Assembly)

I've read this suggestion from you before but I'm not very much inclined to invest any time in this since I don't need it myself. I programmed MultiShrink cause dvdshrink assured me he wouldn't implement any batch feature and I needed that feature myself. Now when I translated DVD Shrink to German to promote it for a wider audience (just because I love this tool) I did it for the fun of it too and I did not expect anything in return. However, I was astonished to see that this was EXACTLY what I got. Of about 11000+ downloaders of my german version NONE bothered to donate even a small amount like 1 USD.
So I'm sorry to say I lack any incentive to spend considerable time on a tool I don't need myself.

I feel guilty if I don't donate for software I regularly use. It's sad that people don't offer even a token donation as a goodwill gesture toward the programmers.
I admire the dedication and expertise of many of these free-thinking people. A few quid is not much to pay to keep the international corporations from stifling the art of software creation.
I could go on (I often do) but would it make any difference?
