SmartRipper hangs trying to unlock drive

I even installed the latest version of SmartRipper. When I start, it says trying to unlock drive and systems hangs. I have to cold boot it restore. I read in one of these forums that installing Easy CD Creator 5.0 after SmartRipper causes a problem. Is that applicable here? Is there a way around ? I have a Win98 SE AMD Duron 750 128MB
My PowerDVD application works fine though.

Try running powerdvd pausing it then running smartripper, it may work I used to have to do it. Use window 2000 as 98 is poo.

If you have the time, I'd be interested to see if DVD Decrypter (v3.0.0.8) does the same thing.
Thanks.

Thanks for your replies.

I tried running PowerDVD and pausing it and then running SmartRipper, but made no difference. I had to go for the cold boot.
I tried SmartRipper with NoASPI.bat, It reads some VOB files as successful. If NoASPI.bat is run after running PowerDVD, SmartRipper successfully goes thru the first step. After selecting the Chapter(s) and clicking on start it gets to work, and suddenly the screen goes black and some multicolour pattern is displayed and off to the cold boot again.
LIGHTNING UK:
I tried an old version of DVD Decrypter and it gave me a read error.
I downloaded a new version and it runs successfully.
However DVD Decrypter extracts whole VOB files, SmartRipper extracts specified chapters which is preferable. Is there still some hope? I was using SmartRipper successfully some time back. Could the installation of EasyCD Creator 5 or CDRWIN subsequently have affected this? Any suggestions (except that of changing the OS - I prefer Win98 for certain reasons).

You may have an ASPI problem. Download Force Aspi 1.7 from the software page. Dump your ASPI layer, delete it and install the new one (read the readme and you'll know what I mean). Then restart your computer and I think you should be fine.
If you use Smartripper, play the DVD in a software DVD player on the computer for a few seconds, then run Smartripper. In the setings, check Unlock drive. Also mark every cell-id in the Key - Check and auto in the VOB file access.

Seeing how my program is totally ASPI based and it *works*, I doubt its really an aspi problem. Seems to me like someone else has found a problem with Trons dodgy coding ;)

Try DEselecting 'unlock drive'. On some drives this makes Smartripper crash. You have to play your dvd a few seconds to unlock your drive.

smartripper was hanging up on me and stilld oes but I figured out how to get around it. Try not putting your dvd in your drive yet, start up smartripper and it will say no dvd found click okay but don't exit smartripper. load your dvd and then if your software starts up just exit it and then on smartripper press the "reload" button and it's worked flawless for me so far?!
BTW; I have found DVD decrypter to be the best one so far

Dionysus & Snike42:
Your suggestions seemed to have worked for me. Well yes I need to start my DVD player and SmartRipper works fine.
Taric25:
I am concerned ForceASPI may cause my Easy CD Creator 5 to cease working. I recently had to reinstall it, due to my wnaspi32.dll experiments.
For now, I have decided to use DVD Decrypter for whole movies, and SmartRipper(with player's support!!!) for selective ripping.

may I just throw in a comment here? I always use dvd decrypter to authenticate my drive and then vstrip to rip the PGC I really need. This procedure has worked for ages ;)
