Crash during CCE Encoding
Morgan
30th November 2001, 12:24
Hi
First I will list my machine specs:
Either (tried on both machines)
AMD 1.4ghz. 512mb RAM.IBM 60GXP 40Gb hard drive - 25Gb free. Set as Ultra 5 under Windows XP. Tried on this machine with Windows ME or XP.
Intel 1ghz 512mb RAM. Maxtor 7200 40gb hard drive. 20+Gb free. Set as Ultra 5 under XP.
Tried DVD2SVCD 1.03 build 5 and 6. Also 1.04 build 2.
Ripped a film (Shrek - PAL) using Smartripper. Using Multipass (3) No 48 to 44 conversion. No NTSC field operation. No subtitles.
The same problem happens on both machines and that is during the process: CCE_Encoded_Video_PAL.mpv the application will lock up.
Neither XP nor windows ME has crashed - I leave the machine on overnight and when I look at the operation I find that the time left and time elapsed info. have stopped (this time at 31% - elapsed 2hrs.22min remaining 5hrs.2mins).
No matter how long that I leave it there is no Hard drive activity and nothing will happen until I close the application. This I have done and included the Log file that it produced for you to look at.
Up to this point it runs well at 0.583 speed or 0.983 depending on which of the two machines that I am running it on. But it will stop responding during the above mentioned operation.
Nothing else is being ran on either of the machines whilst the aplication is running, nor is anybody using them.
Can you help at all..?
If there is any information needed that I have left out then I apologise in advance.
Thanx for your time
Morgan

I was able to do the ntsc version fine.
Have you applied the cce patch for checksum errors?
Morgan
30th November 2001, 13:40
Hi
Thankyou for your quick response.
With not getting any checksum error I never bothered to try the CCE patch.
However I have now downloaded it and will give it a try. I thought though if that was the problem I would have got an error message.
Thankyou and I will let you know if it works or not, at the moment I am trying to do a copy of Evolution to see if that works - if not then I will apply the patch.
Cheers

Hi
Unfortunately I am still not having success, even with the CCE patch installed.
I am finding that the CCE_Encoded_Video_PAL.mpv process will just stop at about 30 to 40% without any error. The system is not locked and the application will close but I can not get it to complete that part of the process on either of my machines.
Any ideas welcome please

Wow!
The EXACT same thing is happening to me! And Shrek was also what I was trying to encode (NTSC)!
It's not Shrek, though, as this happens with ANY movie I try.
I get to around 35% and it just freezes.
PC does NOT freeze or crash, and there are NO ERRORS.
I also have the patch installed, didn't help.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
AMD Athlon 1.13Ghz, Win2kPro, 1Gb RAM.
By the way, my version of CCE is 2.50.
That's the one I should have, right?

What did you rip with?
I've backed up my copy of Shrek pal region 2 no probs using smart ripper.
ps Don't use crash recovery with this problem. I have had this before myself and found starting from re ripping and double checking all my settings is the best start to getting a succesful backup.

Hi
I have ripped the movie with smartripper versions 2.36 and 2.38. I have ripped it each time that I have tried to compile the film to an SVCD, unfortunately without success.
I have not only tried the different versions of DVD2SVCD, as listed, but each time removed and re-installed version 2.50 of CCE.
Getting a little stuck here though.....

Is there a reason to use SmartRipper rather than rip with DVD2SVCD?
The author says the ones in his prog are the best.
Either way, CCE freezes no matter what I rip with...

A related question:
CCE: Lite, SP, or Pro?
Morgan
2nd December 2001, 01:12
Hi
No particular reason as to using Smartripper, I have always used that application to rip a DVD - used it so that I can create a DivX movie and so I am familiar with it.
CCE is version 2.50 SP.

Hi,
I experienced exactly the same problem with Shrek (Pal, region 4). It was quite interesting - I learnt a few things through the process (one of them is that CCE is very unreliable).
When I encoded Shrek, I set 5 pass (call me fussy - I'm happy to spend the extra time for good quality). However, instead of your 35% crash, mine crashed at 20%... Notice the correlation? Number of passes * the % completion when crashed = 100% (or there abouts). Here's what I did to work around the issue.
- I noticed that CCE had not crashed. It appeared to have "paused"
- I cancelled CCE and DVD2SVCD continued as normal
- CCE then did all of the muxing etc.
Guess what? I ended up with a complete copy of Shrek - which tells me that CCE encodes the entire movie sequentially 'n' times (where 'n' is the number of passes selected).
As a result, I ended up with a 1 pass RIP of Shrek (minus about 30 seconds at the end of the credits) - but at least the movie worked. Overall, the quality was pretty good (not perfect). A few noticeable sections where the coded did not cope well was :-
* When Farquaad was shown the contestants. Fiona's castle was briefly shown and it twirled around like water going down a drain pipe (for about 1/2 a second).
* When Shrek smashed the end off the big barrel full of grog the water started to stream out, then gush. The gush did not hold up well.
* When Shrek and Donkey were in the castle and they had just found the dragon, the dragon's breath did not hold up well.
Other than that, I think most of it held up pretty well.
I tried to encode the movie under Windows 98 (SE), Windows 2000 and Windows XP (just before I took XP off).. None of them worked - and they all froze at the same point. I also tried 1.0.3 build 5 and 1.0.4 build 2 (hope I got those version numbers right ;) ).... It made no difference.
Hope the info helps.
If anyone does find out how to work around these issues (without temporal smoothing, or without limiting to 1 pass) then I'd love to know.

just to reiterate...you tried the following with no success?
-rip with internal routines
-rip with vstrip
-you have screensaver, harddrive powerdown, powermanagement disabled, etc.? Check windows settings for POWER for winXP.
Turn off Monitor: Never
Turn off harddisks: Never
System standy: Never
System hibernates: Never
Also disable all power management in the BIOS.
Screensaver set to NONE.
I notice under XP when viewing the task manager it says cce (forgot which task since there's two of them) says 'Not Responding'. However it hasn't stopped and properly resumes on each pass. So I wonder if this CCE stuff has to do with the Not Responding not being able to resume for whatever reason?
Morgan
2nd December 2001, 12:11
Hi
That is interesting what ruok posted. When CCE 'pauses' I eventually stopped it and then the application continued to run. BUT I assumed that the movie that would be produced would be corrupt in some way and so ended the production. I may give this another go and at the point of 'pausing' just let the application continue. I suppose that could account for no error messages or the Log file 'appearing' ok..?
mrbass I can confirm that all the conditions that you have written are met during the production of the SVCD. I have tried the internal ripper (once) rather than use Smartripper but this does not enable the continuation - I thought that that might do it after reading these posts but no luck.
You are right that Task Manager states 'not responding' but it always states that and yet the time left and taken are counting up/down. However theses 'counters' stop responding and remain stuck, along with the % of the movie made for ever once it has reached a certain percentage.
This applies under Win ME and XP and on two different machines with variations of the DVD2SVCD package used - as posted in my original post.
Might have to manage with a 1 pass encoding - thanks again to ruok on the method he used to get a final SVCD disk made.
Any other ideas on this problem...?
Regards and thanks

Hi
Sorry but forgot to answer the above well made point, enirely.
This would not apply under Win ME nor when ruok tried it under Win 98. He also tried it under W2K but I am not sure if the same message is given there.
It *could* suggest however that there maybe a problem with CCE doing a multipass encoding. Confirmed by ruok being able to produce an SVCD of the film by ending the application after it has 'paused' and accepting the quality as a 'single' pass encoded film..?
Thanks

Hi
I have finally got it to work, of a sort.
Having being given the idea by ruok on the multipass problems of CCE I decided to try again and this time just use a single pass only and it worked. I have enclosed the log file for you to look at.
It took about 3.5 hours from start to finish and produced a file to fit onto 1 SVCD disk. The quality isn't as good as using 3 pass or more, but this did not seem to be possible.
I would love to know why the multi pass feature of CCE seems to be problematic as using single pass maybe quicker, and it all fits to 1 disk, but the quality is a little inferior.
Thanks for your help

So would I, trust me, I have been searching for a soultion a very long time without finding any, when I think, "Now I got it" it always turns out that what I got is a solution for that particular movie, the next that bumps needs a whole different fix.

HI there
I'm just new at this DVD ripping, and still trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I'm trying to create a VCD from Dune DVD. Have installed DVD2VCD ver.1.04 Build 1. Hav e followed all directions (hope so) but still I can not produce any encoded video. The audio stream is almost perfect, and the log file stops at the "Audio conversion finished". nothing else. If I run DVD2AVI and load the projects d2s and d2v, both look good, and I can manually produce an excellent video (DVX4 encoded at a 27-30 fps) and the audio stream (which anyhow is created properly abd then processed by DVD2VCD batch task).
here are some information about ny system: Win98se, XP1700+, 512Mram, 46+40Gbyte IBM HDs, MB ASUS A7V266-e.
The last time I tryed the encoding the computer rebooted after the log message Audio conversion finished.
The first time it crashed, and I do nopt know where, but again the audio stream was perfect.
Presumably the problem is produced by the task following the last audio encoding task(subsampling?)
I do not find any *.ecl file, i.e. CCE was not even started.
Any suggestion is wellcome.
regards
Mastro

Hi Mastro
I am not sure as to what your problem could be but you will be better off posting it as a new topic rather than posting within this thread, that way more people will be able to read the problem that you are having from the subject line of your problem rather than believe that this thread contains posts only related to my own problem with CCE.
Best of luck

Something similar happened to me today (encoding Alien Resurrection). The speed just dropped to nothing, and then basically died. The program was still going (the encode window), just not..well..encoding. I killed the program, and reattempted it. (I'm in W2k btw).
I'll come back and follow this up if it died again with my log file, maybe some similarity can lead to a solution.

It's a bit strange because CCE is definately alive (I left it one time for about 12 hours - and it did not encode a single frame!!!).
The only thing I can conclude (and DVD2SVCD indicated too) is that CCE SP 2.5 has reliability problems. I strongly suspect it has nothing to do with DVD2SVCD because I shut down the machine and ran CCE SP 2.5 independently of DVD2SVCD and still had the same grief.
Many thanks for the excellent info here folks...

I am currently doing intensive tests to figure out why this is happening. The movie I'm trying to convert is a Warner Bros movie called Soldier. (maybe the fact it is a Warner Bros is the problem, since I've heard from more than one that they have problems with WB movies). Anyway, CCE stalls a either the 2nd or the 3rd pass (19% or 39%) all depending on the setup. Luckily I have 3 computers to test this on so I can do 3 different setup each time it fails. I will get back to you all if I'm successful.

5th December 2001, 11:46
Hi
Maybe CCE is employing some kind of subjective quality filter here, reads the film as one pass (not knowing what to expect) and then decides that at a certain point it is sh**e and then locks up. That is why it probably happens on Warner Bros films...
Just a thought.

Ok, I have now gone past 39% of Soldier. All I did was lowering the Max. Bitrate (2498) down to 2400 (if you have the time you can experiment with 2400 and go down from there). Could you all please try this too?
Just make sure that the Max. Avg. bitrate is smaller (with about 100) than Max. Bitrate

I have tried dvdsvcd on 10 different computers and operating systems at home and they all worked perfect when backing up my purchased dvd's. Only time I noticed when first starting out that cce had problems was when I had the wrong cce version. Lot of the times it looked like it was the right version but it wasn't and crashed/froze at around 30 percent then I finally figured out which correct version of cce to use. I see alot of people posting crash and freezing problems with cce probably due to the fact their probably not using the correct version. Or I could be totally wrong...lol

Well, I thought I posted my log file here last nite. Anyway, I've tried something drastic...I reinstalled WinXP onto my secondary OS partition and only installed DVD2SVCD software. And now (god willing, I have 1.5 hours left in a 14 hour freakin encode...just the CCE part...the other part took like 4 hours) everything SEEMS to work. Given, it crashed out in a audio conversion, but crash recovery picked it right up and fixed it. Also, I lowered my overclock and that seemed to fix the issues right up (stability in a normal/gaming environment is TOTALLY different then encoding...).
So, I think maybe some issues might be to do with this. Try making a 2gb partition and run the ripping/converting software off there. And lower your OC if you are OCing.

Hi
As I write this I am 92% through a CCE encoding. Things are looking good, this is done, of course, on my other computer.
This was achieved by following the suggestion of the Author and reducing the Max and the Av Max bitrate within the DVD2SVCD ini file. I reduced them to 2300 and 2100.
No doubt the above settings might not be optimal but the whole purpose was to try and get a 'working model' as such.
Before it would continue to hang with the default settings and now it continues to run...
Looking through the many posts, within both the Newbie and Advanced sections, this problem does seem to occur enough for me to wonder what the definitive solution to be and not, perhaps, a 'fix' for a 'problematic' film...
Thankyou to all who have contributed here, I am sure we can continue to offer support to each other on this problem by helping both the Author, with this excellent creation, and each other to search for some commonality to this difficulty. :)
BTW Necro I am not overclocking at all, don't need to with a 1.4 Athlon, it is a very stable system. With 20gb on a seperate partition for the ripping/converting etc to take place.
Hcrejazz I appreciate your help but the version of CCE that I am using is the correct one for the job, to make sure I have checked this though. Hey btw I bet even Bill Gates doesn't have 10 computers at home ;)
So to summerise the reduced settings for CCE seem to have resolved this problem on this movie but could this be considered a solution to be a fix for all movies or just one for this film. Bit of a pain that you only know that you have a problem when it is so far into the encoding...
Thanx

Well, after my 14 hour 4 pass encode, I couldnt get it to burn onto image right. I realized a bit late that I chose the wrong images for the start/change cd image, and used I-author (that I knew, but I realized I never tested it with a trailer, only vcdximager).
So, now I'm going to try a (hopefully) quick 1-2 pass w/out subs and with vcdximager and a bit lowered bitrates and see what I can get.
Though CCE does seem to be working right now :).
(But I am determined to get a perfect OC'ed speed to get it running a bit faster than .4 speed)

k I am also new to this but I think it is an dvd2svcd problem.
Till yesterday I used version 1.0.3 build 5 and the multipass (5 times) went just fine. Now I installed version 1.0.4 build 2 and the moment cce has to encode the movie it crashed.. I dont even get 19 or 39 percent, i keep stuck at 0 percent... My movie isnt a WB movie, so I have to add that I dont think its WB movies that have the problem...
Anyway Ill experiment with the settings a bit and see what happens...
Right now I am encoding with max bitrate 2498 min bitrate 16xx min average 16xx and max average 1733 so that the movie fits on 2 cd's...
Ill let you guyz know what I find out.. :D

Welp, I've been having issues with the results I'm getting from DVD2SVCD (did a 1 pass VBR, and for some reason only got 1 cd worth of stuff that was rather screwey near the end). This is once I got CCE working.
I'm attempting to learn a few other methods, but hopefully once I understand everything better (exactly what DVD2SVCD is doing), I'm going to try to understand this more.

Hi
Yes I too did a one pass encoding and got a finished movie BUT it fits onto 1 disk - not to sure how this happened, but for me adjusting the Max rate and Max Av rate helped for the one movie but not sure if it will be a permanent solution. Bad news when you have to wait for hours to see if it will work or not...

it will be interesting to know if it works for you.

K guyz I did try and lower the max bitrate from 2498 to 2400 and guess what it worked just like dvd2svcd said.. :D
Yesterday I tried it with the whole movie though. This morning I tried it with 1-2 files and it crashed.. Now I am doing it again with 2 files and CCE goes through...
Oh heres the birates I set:
Max 2400 Min 1642 Max avg 1733
Min avg not set
In about 30 mins I know the result and I hope that my other problem is solved then too. :D
Edit: The movie was encoded succesfully unfortunately my other problem still exists.. I get crazy macro blocks when I encode the whole movie.. Im at my wits end and dont know what to do about that anymore.. I guess im gonna try to reinstall CCE to see if that works for my last problem.. Have been at it for about a week now and im getting demotivated...
Here's the thing: I am encoding a movie called 'in the shadows' and if I encode one vob everything is fine, but when I do multiple vob's I get this weird shit on everything thatt moves (looks like macroblocks), however I tried all the tutorials about everything by now and it wont solve my problem. I think the problem is CCE SP, so what I would like to know is do any of you have changed settings of CCE after installation ?? Or might it just be the movie? Im gonna try an other movie now to see if the problem still exists.. Sorry to bug you guyz here for it, but i thought since its a CCE thread.. heheheh

Yeah morgan, the waiting hours thing is kinda getting a bit nuts. I decided to learn TMPGEnc in the meantime :). (It's encoding right now). When I have the time I'm going to try DVD2SVCD again and see if I can get it working - but the time commitment is really long w/my Cel800.
I changes the bitrates too, trying to get a better encode - then stoped and set them back to default because I didnt want to screw anything up (just changing the max to 2400 to stop bitrate problems that happened in the last attempt). It seemed to ignore the CD sizes completely though.

@ Necro
I noticed in your last post that you have a Cel800. Is that a Celeron 800? I thought that CCE wouldn't work with a Celeron. Could this be part of the problem?

I believe that CCE requires SSE..so any cpu that has those instructions will work. I might be wrong though.

"This core didn't improve performance noticeably, it simply added SSE support since it was essentially a Coppermine Pentium III core with half of its L2 cache disabled (256KB / 2 = 128KB)."

The CeleronII's have SSE instructions (making them at least a bit capable). I would like to see some comparisons on movie encoding - might be interesting to see what exactly the missing cache does.
Also, it's actually a Cel566 @ 800 (overclocked). I whittled problems away - originally thinking it was that because I set it back to normal speed and installed the OS new - and found that I can do an encode perfectly fine w/TMPGEnc at that speed. Also, I figured out the problem I was having with DVD2SVCD and am going to try it again. (It was my fault I think...that and some of the programs being a bit flaky sometimes and crashing for no reason - audio especially).

I've got a Celeron 900 Machine that I just put together with a new MB and Processor along with a few other used parts I had laying around. I plan on using it as a firewall for my internet service and maybe as a file server to share files on my other machines.
But, in light of this information, I'll give it a try at DVD2SVCD and see how it works. Only problem is it doesn't have the burner or DVD drive, but I can transfer the files over the network. This won't affect anything DVD2SVCD does though. Since the size of the HDD isn't big enough to do a full movie, I'll try it on a few chapters and see how it does. I'll post back once it has completed something.

daggummit...that means xbox 733Mhz most likely doesn't have SSE support so when it's hacked we can't use it for a DVD2SVCD ripping box. It's slow as molasses currently just converting .wav to .wma so it's a moot idea.

I started an encode of the first VOB file from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" using 3 pass vbr. It's about 84% done on encoding with a speed of 0.584. So far no problems, just a little slower than I'm used to.
The machine is a Celeron 900 MHz with 256 MB PC133 running Win2K. The hard drives (6 GB and 4 GB) are some that were salvaged from old PCs so I'm sure they're not very fast and they're definitely not large enough to do a full encode. But with a new drive, it could be a viable alternative if I wanted to backup a DVD and still be able to use my main computer without fear of screwing things up. :D

Hi
Well I hope that the issues with CCE may have been resolved or at the least worked around.
I have made a copy of the film The Hole without needing to alter the Max bitrate or average bitrate and it did a multi pass (3) and completed fine.
Not only that but it did the whole film in 11 hours in total - that IS a record, for me anyway... :D
Hope that it has worked out ok for the rest of you, good luck

Well I reckon this maybe a bios setting problem.
I had exactly the same problems as you guys, It would get to 30ish % and then just stop. It would close down no problem but would never finish the rip. I tried on both win2k and winxp.
Anyway, I was having a few other niggly problems with my pc. So i did a bit of searching and found this thread :-
http://www.amdmb.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=82226
basically its a guide of how to set up the motherboard I use. I did everything this guy says and now my pc is perfectly stable and dvd2svcd now works perfect, even without altering bitrates etc.
I know this is a walkthrough for an msi motherboard, but I was thinking it maybe worth your while having a look at the bios settings he recomends and seeing if there is something there that might make sence as to why this is happening. I am posotive it was the bios settings that fixed it for me as i had tried everything else prior to this. Unfortunatly I cant remember exactly what settings I altered acordng to his guide but I know i did a few (eg altering ddr voltage to 2.6) and disabling a few bits n bats.
For info I was trying to do Scary Movie, and had only tried that one dvd (about a dozen times!!)
Anyway, bloody excellent program now its working!!
cheers

Mine worked as well by changing the bitrate settings. Another thing that could have caused this....I have made maybe 15 backups so far using dvd2svcd and never once has this problem happend to me, the other day i got a new hd and transfered the dvd2svcd program over to it. cce was still on my other drive. When i started encoding my most recent movie this is when cce crashed. So i put everything back to my old hd and changed the bitrate settings and now it works fine. So I am not sure wich one fixed the problem.

Could anyone explain to me why cce would crash at 99%? there were no errors or anything just frooze at 99 percent. said not responding in task manager. it was after 29 hours of encoding.

am I the only one that monkied with the priority level of cce?
I set it to high and it worked fine (once). But since then everytime I encode, I can't play the resulting mpg, probably because I re-installed 2k and didn't re-install cce...
