View Full Version : BBmpeg, (Old-version) 23.97; Mplex, (New-version) 23.976 = A prob for me

Before I start I would like to thank all the contributors to the package and DVD2SVCD for making a great tool that I consider essential :sly:
With the latest version, I am having trouble burning DVDs using Encore. After encoding with no images, bbmpeg used to handle the muxing. It seemed to output at 23.97fps. In the latest version, Mplex handles the muxing. It seems good, but it outputs at 23.976. Encore will not accept 23.976 video. It wants to re-transcode, which is not something I want for obvious reasons.
I have no quarrels with Encore and am familiar with it, so I would prefer to not have to switch to Sonic or something that can handle 23.976. Is there a way to easily get 23.97 out of the latest version of DVD2SVCD? I looked through the ini's and know where the framerate is set (on a per-project basis), but am not sure if stopping, simply changing that and then recovering would help me. Even if it did, I would prefer to automate it rather than that sloppy workaround. Suggestions?

You could try DVDPatcher to patch the file header to a value of 23.97 before authoring with Encore.
Cheers

That was a good suggestion. Unfortunately, the files show up as 23.97 in DVD patcher. Even after running the first header or entire file through as 23.97, Encore still gives the 23.976 warning and says it must immediately trascode. Strange????

23.97 is not a supported framerate for NTSC.
29.97 or 23.976 are the correct framerates.
I am not sure why you are having a problem here.

Yikes you are right, Nick. I am not sure how I missed the framerates. With my settings, the new version of DVD2SVCD is outputting 23.976 and the old was doing 29.97. Even though 23.976 is NTSC, Encore still wants to transcode. It is fine with 29.97.
I think I know what is happening now though. The old version used to do a 3:2? pulldown with my settings to output 29.97, but the new is outputting at 23.976 progressive. I am not sure where I have the new DVD2SVCD set to do 23.976 progressive and not pulldown (or if there is a good reason for this and that it is better to let the DVD player do the pulldown), but it is surprising to me that Encore does not handle this properly.

There is no good reason for this - pulldown flags should be set.
I will do a test run to see if I can reproduce this problem. If pulldown is not executed it could be worth a bug report to the author.

OK. Found a 23.976 fps avi of 1 minutes' duration.
Ideal for a test run.
I cannot reproduce this error. Pulldown runs as normal for me then mplex makes the mpeg using the pulldowned files. What video encoder are you using? Better still, could you :logfile:

Okay, I will post the log. I deleted, so I will have to re-do. I was playing around some more and seemed to have pinpointed where my problem occurs.
I assumed it was in the pulldown as the framerates changed. I re-did things, watching as they went and the pulldown is executed the same in both versions. I could also take the Pulldown_Encoded_Video_NTSC.mpv from both versions and Encore did not want to transcode either (29.97 already...pulldown looks good). So, I would assume that something is happening in the muxing as the bbMPEG muxed file works and the Mplex one doesn't.
I am going to work on it and figure it out before sending anyone on a wild goose chase and if I can't I'll post my logs.

Okay, I ran a small test file through both. Muxed framerates, according to Encore, are indicated. Both pulldown files were tested to be 29.97 and Encore had no problem with them. Here are my results:

Well, I just got around it by muxing with bbmpeg from the command line. There is no doubt that Mplex and BBMPEG are muxing differently and that the Mplex file does not work in Encore.
