View Full Version : Questions about DVD's and Editing Programs

Hello,

I have a question regarding the use of DVD's that I own with editing programs. Specifically, Magix Movie Edit Pro, VOB edit, and TMPGenc (trial version). However, I want to be sensitive to the rules here. So, I would like to start with a basic question.

I am looking to take my DVD's (which I have purchased) and download them onto my hard drive (using DVDdecrypter) and then take clips and use them in projects that I would use for school and at church. I am not looking to profit financially and, again, these are not downloaded movies. If that is a violation of the rules, I completely understand, so I thought I would check first, before describing the situation.

Since I am here though, I will give a basic indication and then answer any further questions you may have if we can in fact proceed. Basically, I seem to be able to copy using DVDdecrypter (the movies play fine in Win Dvd for instance), but....

1. The video is incredibly choppy in Movie Edit Pro.
2. The audio is present in Movie Edit Pro, but it seems to play
at a slower speed than the video. (the audio starts but gradually
falls further and further behind
the video)

3. The video looks good in VOBedit, but I can't seem to get any audio.
4. The video looks good in TMPGenc, but I can't seem to get any audio.

The one thing I can tell you is that I do have an AC-3 filter downloaded.

Certainly feel free to disregard the questions regarding Movie Edit Pro as I have not seen it discussed here, I just figured it couldn't hurt to mention it. One last thing, I am definitely a newb, but any post would be appreciated. I will just do my best to follow your advice and simply muddle through. Thanks a lot.

Hi!
4. The video looks good in TMPGenc, but I can't seem to get any audio.
(I'm assuming it's an .AVI file you're eventually loading into TMPGEnc) In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to one greater than the highest priority of listed items. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

OK, that sounds pretty straightforward. But, I do need to take a preliminary step. Right now, they are still listed as VOB files. Is there a program that you can suggest for converting VOB's to AVI's?

I checked out the download page, but I didn't see anything that specifically talked about converting those files. Thanks.

With Ulead VideoStudio 9 Located Here (http://www.ulead.com/runme_ns.htm) you can import portions of your commercial DVD straight into your homemade movie to edit together.
I am not familiar with your other programs.

Regards,:)

P.S. They have a fully functional trial version.

Thanks, I'll give that a try and post the results.

OK, I downloaded and things are closer, however here is the latest situation.....

I transferred a movie to my hard drive using DVDdecrypter. When I play the files in the import screen there is video and audio. The video is a little jumpy, it starts and stops as it plays (the delays are tiny but noticeable).

Also, when I import the files and then play them in the main screen, there is video but no audio, which seems strange.

I know that feedback suggested the program, but if anyone has any thoughts I am willing to try just about anything, thanks.

Don't worry about whether stuff plays smoothly *within the editor*. Render a final output file and see if that plays smoothly.

Cool, that makes sense, thanks neuron.

So, I guess that just leaves the problem of the audio in the various programs which is vexing.

Ulead has an active support forum for VideoStudio Located Here. (http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewforum.php?f=1&sid=afa957ecab7b2444e46e6caf435d1329) You may find something there that relates to your specific problem.

On another note, did you capture your home movie DV-AVI (it is Digital Video?) to your hard drive as Type 1 or Type 2?
Making a capture as type 2 does not interleave the audio. You, also, must have the proper drivers installed for everything to work properly.

BTW, Ulead VS9 allows one to change capture drivers (the 'gear' icon listed as 'options' near the bottom left of your screen).

If the final video you want is DVD then don't convert to avi as an inbetween.

I've used DVD-lab to compile VOB's descrypted from different Demo DVD's to create a single showcase DVD of clients - and I guess this process is similar to what you want to do (there is a trial version of DVD-lab plus tutorials on doing this on their web page)

Well, I think I figured it out, I can now get both video and audio, I am inching closer to my goal.

Here is my question, is there a way to get the clips to play in WinDVD or Windows media player, or Interactual player. At this point, they don't seem to recognize the files from the editing program (Ulead VS 9).

Thanks for all the help, this newb really appreciates it.

Are you exporting the files in a video format, or are you just saving the project? You won't be able to "play" the project files.
