My old computer died so I installed 1.2.3b1 and WinASPI on my new one and for some reason I can no longer convert AVI to DVD. DVDAuthor fails, and if you track back you discover that it has no input file because mplex failed. Mplex_log.txt says:

INFO: [???] mplex version 2.0.0 (dvd2svcd modified) (2.2.3 $Date: 2004/01/13 20:45:26 $)
INFO: [???] File C:\Multimedia\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_NTSC.mpv looks like an MPEG Video stream.
**ERROR: [???] File unrecogniseable!
**ERROR: [???] Unrecogniseable file(s)... exiting.

I can play the Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_NTSC.mpv and Encoded_audio_1.mpa files (the two inputs to mplex) in Media Player so it appears that they're fine. My full DVD2SVCD log file is:

Any ideas what's going on?

Make sure the video is MPEG-2, a correct framerate (in this case 29.97 after pulldown flags) and correct resolution (720 x 480).

One way to test the compliancy of the video and audio streams is to try multiplexing them in MuxMan and then checking the log (C:\muxman.log).

muxman.log reports:

MuxMan version 0.14g
Accepted video C:\Multimedia\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_NTSC.mpv size = 2028283957
Accepted audio C:\Multimedia\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Encoded_audio_1.mpa

The VOBs it created were a full gig larger than I usually get for a one hour TV show (2.4GB total vs. the usual 1.1GB) from a normal DVD2SVCD run of a conversion from a 350MB XVid file. But the bottom line is that I burned the MuxMan output on a DVD+RW and it plays great (and in synch). All of which leaves us with the question of why mplex failed and DVD2SVCD didn't complete. Regardless, thanks for giving me a way to complete the process--albeit manually.

That's strange...I was expecting MuxMan to reject the file(s).

As for the size, with CCE at least, in VBR mode the size can be smaller than the average bitrate because the encoder judges that you don't need that much bitrate. At other times the full allocation will be used. It depends on the content and whether you have used anti-noise, half-D1 etc. From a quick calculation "Avg. Bitrate: 7200.00" appears to be in line with your output filesize.

As an aside, MuxMan is a more compliant multiplexer...although as a practical matter it may not be an issue :)
